Impact Of Highway Bridge Runoff On Adjacent Receiving Water Bodies, James E. Christopher

Two locations, Lake Ivanhoe and the Maitland interchange of Interstate 4, were selected to study the impact of bridge runoff on receiving water bodies. The Lake Ivanhoe location includes two similar bridges, one without scuppers and one with scuppers. The Maitland interchange site has several borr ponds which drain to Lake Lucien. Samples were collected from Lake Ivanhoe below the bridges and in the open lake away from the bridges. Also samples were collected from the east pond, west pond, and lake Lucien, at the Maitland interchange. Samples included water, sediments, plants and benthos to detect differences, if any, in …

Critical Exposure Pathways: An Analysis Of The Environmental Impact Of Gaseous Effluents From Light-Water-Cooled Reactors, Robert Danna

The analysis of the environmental impact of routine radioactive gaseous releases from operating nuclear power stations is discussed using a radiation dose assessment. This analysis includes a discussion of the origin of radionuclide effluents, a discussion of federal policies, and a calculation of radiation doses to man. A model of estimating the radioactive dose from gaseous effluents from light-water-cooled reactors is described using guidelines described in the Code of Federal Regulations and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Regulatory Guides. The environmental impact of these sources is then analyzed using dose rates calculated along critical exposure pathways for various radioactive nuclides. Examples …

An assessment of the environmental effects of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is discussed, reactor waste inventory and standards are presented, and the alternatives for high-level radioactive waste disposal reviewed, with particular attention being given to disposal in deep geological formations on land. One of the major concerns regarding potential impacts of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is the lack of a definite and proven method of disposal of the high-level radioactive wastes from light water moderated reactors. Four untreated and one magnesium treated water samples from Lake Washington, the potable water source for the city of Melbourne, Florida, were collected and analyzed for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Ni, Zn, Mb, Ca, and color on the basis of molecular weight distribution. Molecular weight distributions of the samples were obtained using a Millipore ultrafiltration system and filters in the following sizes: 106, 105, 2.5 x 104, 104, and 103 nominal molecular weight limits (nmwl). Color causing materials in the untreated samples were found to be located in the molecular weight fraction greater than 2.5 x 104 nmwl. …

The Effects Of Altered Traffic Signs Upon Vehicular Driving Modes And Consequent Fuel Conservation And Environmental Benefits, As Measured By Vehicular Noise-Imprints, Mark Daniel Pfarrer

The hypothesis is that the recorded noise-imprints of a vehicle at an intersection can be used to identify and accurately time the driving modes of deceleration, idle, slow cruise, and acceleration. This is proven by analyzing and comparing noise-imprints of vehicles at an uncontrolled intersection marked first with a "stop" sign, and then by a "yield" and an experimental "dead slow" sign. By relating the duration of each driving mode to known relations, the overall efficiency of an intersection can be characterized.
