Exploring The Adoption And Use Of The Smartphone Technology In Emerging Regions: A Literature Review And Hypotheses Development, Fahad Aldhaban, Tugrul Unsal Daim, Robert R. Harmon

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Users’ acceptance of a new information technology (IT) is a determining factor of its market success. A solid understanding of the users’ adoption process and use behavior enables a more robust definition of user requirements and better market alignment. This is especially important in markets characterized by rapid technological change such as smartphones. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is often used to assess the factors affecting adoption of new technologies. However, TAM models often omit the role of important variables such as human and social factors in the adoption process. In developing markets such as China, cultural and social influences …

In the paper, a PESTLE (political, economic, social, technical, legal, and environmental) analysis is used to conduct an initial evaluation for electric vehicles (EV) and gasoline cars. Furthermore, two cash flow models are created to describe the scenarios of both gasoline and electric car respectively. Based upon the proposed models, the equivalent uniform annual cost (EUAC) methodology is used to calculate the cost during the period of car ownership. Four compact EVs and five compact gasoline cars are selected in the analysis. The results expose that the actual return of federal tax credit impacts the EUAC value. The 50% return …

Siting A Wind Farm In Oregon: Considering A Hierarchical Decision Model With Four Scenarios, Diane Yates Aug 2015

Siting A Wind Farm In Oregon: Considering A Hierarchical Decision Model With Four Scenarios, Diane Yates

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper primarily serves two purposes: first, it looks to develop a methodology that takes scenarios and certain hard-to-measure intangibles such as politics, social impact, and even religion; as well as more tangible and measurable variables such as environmental impacts, cost and types of materials, storage and wind turbine technologies, to name a few, that then could be used as input to a decision-making model on where to build a wind farm. The hierarchical decision model (HDM) then analyzes these variables, based on an independent judging panel, in order to come up with a recommendation for the best site on …

Project Management In Product Development: Toward A Framework For Targeted Flexibility, Antonie J. Jetter, Fatima Albar

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

As a discipline, project management has been accused of having lost its relevance for innovative initiatives because it emphasizes planning and control over the flexibility and learning-based strategies that are needed to succeed under uncertainty. Several authors therefore recommend adaptive project management practices - sometimes named “targeted flexibility” - that respond to project characteristics commonly found in innovation, namely novelty, complexity, speed and - as a result - uncertainty. This paper investigates how this proposed adaptation of project management occurs in a context with high levels of novelty that organizes work in projects and needs to accommodate projects of different …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

River flow and sediment transport in estuaries influence morphological development over decadal and century time scales, but hydrological and sedimentological records are typically too short to adequately characterize long-term trends. In this study, we recover archival records and apply a rating curve approach to develop the first instrumental estimates of daily delta inflow and sediment loads to San Francisco Bay (1849 – 1929). The total sediment load is constrained using sedimentation/erosion estimated from bathymetric survey data to produce continuous daily sediment transport estimates from 1849 to 1955, the time period prior to sediment load measurements. We estimate that ~55% (45 …

Multiple Objective Evolution Strategies Using Data Envelopment Analysis, James V. Lill, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Often in science and engineering we are faced with complicated nonlinear problems in optimization that involve simultaneously minimizing or maximizing various non-commensurate quantities. For example, a basic task in design engineering or technology management is to balance suitable measures of performance against the cost. We present a simplified approach for performing multiple objective optimization by combining standard single objective Evolution Strategies with Data Envelopment Analysis. This latter method employs linear programming to compute an L1 distance of a given solution from the Pareto frontier defined by the evolving population of solutions, or from a related frontier defined by DEA. This …

A Study Of The U.S. Intrastate Crowdfunding Exemptions, Ahmed Bohliqa

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The enactment of intrastate crowdfunding exemptions around the United States has built up a lot of excitement. Crowdfunding became a popular phenomenon in the past 15 years for art and design projects. Crowdfunding companies only allowed raising money by receiving donations or loans without giving funders any security interests in the project's company. This is because any potential economic return could turn the transaction into a securities offering subject to the costly federal and state laws and regulations. Nonetheless, crowdfunding has been effective in enabling new innovations and ideas bloom. Intrastate securities crowdfunding might prove to be one of the …

Connecting Customers With Engineers For The Successful Fuzzy Front End: Requirements Of Tools, Byung Sung Yoon, Antonie J. Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

In technology-driven enterprises, marketing typically acts as a “go-between” that captures customer needs and experiences and aggregates and interprets them for engineering. Knowledge exchange thus occurs through an indirect path. However, as a result of rapidly changing and unpredictable environments and complex products with tacit requirements, companies increasingly emphasize the need for engineering to be more strongly engaged with customers'. Accordingly, an increasing number of methods for customer research in early stages on new product development, the so-called fuzzy front end (FFE), emphasize direct knowledge exchange and collaboration between engineering and customers. Based on a review of the literature, this …

Improving Library Efficiency To Meet Patron's Needs: A Data Envelopment Analysis Benchmarking Model, Michael Clark

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Technological innovation and the information age have increased patrons’ expectations of the services and resources that academic libraries provide. Libraries are responding to patrons’ needs by providing digital resources and services, and collaborative spaces that invite communication and knowledge sharing. In order to effectively meet patrons’ needs, libraries are striving to efficiently manage their human, materials, and fiscal resources. Libraries have traditionally measured efficiency by developing single factor productivity indexes. However, these qualitative methods do not adequately address the efficiency aspect which measures the transformation of resources (inputs) into services (outputs). Data envelopment analysis (DEA) measures the relative efficiencies of …

A Computational Method To Predict And Study Underwater Noise Due To Pile Driving, Scott Schecklman, Nathan Laws, Lisa M. Zurk, Martin Siderius

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A hybrid modeling approach that uses the parabolic equation (PE) with an empirical source model is presented to study and predict the underwater noise due to pile driving in shallow, inhomogeneous environments over long propagation ranges. The empirical source model uses a phased point source array to simulate the time-dependent pile source. The pile source is coupled with a broadband application of a PE wave propagation model that includes range dependent geoacoustic properties and bathymetry. Simulation results are shown to be in good agreement with several acoustic observations of pile driving in the Columbia River between Portland, OR and Vancouver, …

Compiling Collapsing Rules In Certain Constructor Systems, Sergio Antoy, Andy Jost Jul 2015

Compiling Collapsing Rules In Certain Constructor Systems, Sergio Antoy, Andy Jost

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The implementation of functional logic languages by means of graph rewriting requires a special handling of collapsing rules. Recent advances about the notion of a needed step in some constructor systems offer a new approach to this problem. We present two results: a transformation of a certain class of constructor-based rewrite systems that eliminates collapsing rules, and a rewrite-like relation that takes advantage of the absence of collapsing rules. We formally state and prove the correctness of these results. When used together, these results simplify without any loss of efficiency an implementation of graph rewriting and consequently of functional logic …

Automatic Fault Injection For Driver Robustness Testing, Kai Cong, Li Lei, Zhenkun Yang, Fei Xie

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Robustness testing is a crucial stage in the device driver development cycle. To accelerate driver robustness testing, effective fault scenarios need to be generated and injected without requiring much time and human effort. In this pa- per, we present a practical approach to automatic runtime generation and injection of fault scenarios for driver robust- ness testing. We identify target functions that can fail from runtime execution traces, generate effective fault scenarios on these target functions using a bounded trace-based it- erative strategy, and inject the generated fault scenarios at runtime to test driver robustness using a permutation-based injection mechanism. We …

Toward A Spatial-Temporal Measure Of Land-Use Mix, Steven R. Gehrke, Kelly Clifton Jul 2015

Toward A Spatial-Temporal Measure Of Land-Use Mix, Steven R. Gehrke, Kelly Clifton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Urban planning and public-health research has long been interested in the connection between land-use mix and travel. Interest from urban planners stems from the potential of transportation efficiency gains achieved by an increased land-use mix and subsequent shortening of trip lengths; whereas, public-health research advocates an increased land-use mix as an effective policy for facilitating greater physical activity. Yet, despite the transportation, land-use, and health benefits related to improving land-use mix and the extent of topical attention given by researchers, no consensus has been reached regarding the magnitude of its effect on travel. This absence of agreement may largely be …

Prediction -- The Quintessential Policy Model Validation Test, Wayne Wakeland Jul 2015

Prediction -- The Quintessential Policy Model Validation Test, Wayne Wakeland

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is essential to objectively test how well policy models predict real world behavior. The method used to support this assertion involves the review of three SD policy models emphasizing the degree to which the model was able to fit the historical outcome data and how well model-predicted outcomes matched real world outcomes as they unfolded. Findings indicate that while historical model agreement is a favorable indication of model validity, the act of making predictions without knowing the actual data, and comparing these predictions to actual data, can reveal model weaknesses that might be overlooked when all of the available …
