Elastin like polypeptides (ELPs) are an emerging class of biomaterials due to their unique group of chemical, physical and biological properties. We have constructed a library of ELPs based on the pentapeptide amino acid repeat sequence (GVGVP). ELPs exhibit lower critical solution temperature (LCST) transition behavior from a soluble phase below the transition temperature (Tt) to an insoluble two phase system above the transition temperature. This process is completely reversible so that ELPs can become soluble again upon lowering the temperature. In this thesis we investigate and compare the average performances of ordinary and generalized direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) systems under multi-path fading and multiple-access interference. As part of multiple access performance, we also consider generation of orthogonal and semi-orthogonal codes using various algorithms, and compare cross correlation properties of codes formed by 2-level and 3-level signature sequences. The thermal performance was examined computationally for the stationary channels with rib turbulators oriented at 90 degrees. Ribs were placed on opposite walls and the heat transfer coefficients and frictional loss were calculated. Three stationary channels with aspect ratios (W/H) 1, 2 and 4 were considered for the analysis. The thermal performance was measured by calculating the Nusselt number and frictional losses. Dietary supplement wastewater contains higher order polysaccharides such as the complex sugars maltodextrin and low fat milk. These complex sugars contain a significant amount of organic carbon therefore, presence of these sugars can pose threats to the environment if discharged without treatment. While many food processing plants are required to send their waste through wastewater treatment, legislation may require preliminary treatment of these wastes in order to satisfy the effluent discharge requirements. The masts are modeled as vertically supported cantilever beams,with one end fixed to the ground, and the other end free. This thesis presents the results of the finite element analysis (FEA) approach for designing a Permanent Magnet Alternator (PMA). The PMA is configured as a cantilever hollow shaft supported by two identical rolling contact bearings. The performance requirements of the PMA are a maximum operating speed of 16,000 rpm, with a maximum shaft displacement of less than 0.010 in at its free end. The static and dynamic results of a cantilever beam was predicted by closed form solutions and verified to those results obtained from FEA for code validation. The objective of this thesis is to explore an innovative approach to the on-line health monitoring of rotating machinery in the presence of structural damage using active magnetic bearings (AMBs). First, the detailed model of the rotor with the breathing transverse crack is developed using finite element method. When SiC surface reacts with O2, protective SiO2 scales are formed, which are the basis for the corrosion resistance of SiC. While high-rate transmission allows delivering more information in less time, the corresponding performance improvement is less than expected due to the PHY- and MAC-layer overheads, imposed by the 802.11/16 standards. However, MAC layer protocol overheads dominate the transmission capability particularly at high rates and hinder high speed transmission. It is well-known that the Paxos algorithm can be used to build provably correct practical fault tolerant systems. In this thesis, a lightweight consensus framework - Paxos-Based Fault Tolerance (PFT) framework and its practical implementation is presented. It also includes how the system tolerates faults under practical conditions where the replicas might not be strictly homogeneous due to the asynchrony of their deployment environment. Most common tests performed to assess the strength and reliability of components made from ceramics are bend bar specimens tested in three-point and four-point flexure, C-ring and O-ring specimen under diametral compressive or tensile loads and biaxial ring-on-ring specimens. Microfluidic platforms for magnetic cell separation were developed and investigated for isolation of magnetic particles and magnetically tagged cells from a fluidic sample. Two types of magnetic separation platforms were considered: an Isodynamic Open Gradient Magnetic Sorter (OGMS) and a multistage bio-ferrograph. Miniaturized magnets were designed using magnetostatic simulation software, microfluidic channels were fabricated using microfabrication technology and magnetic separation was investigated using video microscopy and digital image processing. Adhesion and proliferation of UMR 106-01 osteoblast cells were studied on various surface modified titanium materials such as polished, sandblasted, anodized and alkaline treated. Anodization of polished surface in Hydrofluoric acid developed nano-tubes, while NaOH treatment produced spongy microporous morphology. Test samples were coated with non-adhesive protein bovine serum albumin and compared with fibronectin coated specimens. The adhesion study lasted for 4 hrs, where osteoblast cells were cultured in serum free medium. Steel slag is an industrial byproduct obtained from the steel manufacturing industry. It is produced in large quantities during the steel-making operations which utilize Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). Steel slag can also be produced by smelting iron ore in the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). Steel slag can be used in the construction industry as aggregates in concrete by replacing natural aggregates. Natural aggregates are becoming increasingly scarce and their production and shipment is becoming more difficult.
