Global Sensitivity Analysis Applied To Model Inversion Problems: A Contribution To Rail Condition Monitoring, René Schenkendorf, Jörn Groos

René Schenkendorf

Rising demands on railroad infrastructure operator by means of profitability and punctuality call for advanced concepts of Prognostics and Health Management. Condition based preventive maintenance aims at strengthening the rail mode of transport through an optimized scheduling of maintenance actions based on the actual and prognosticated infrastructure condition, respectively. When applying model-based algorithms within the framework of Prognostics and Health Management unknown model parameters have to be identified first. Which of these parameters should be known as precisely as possible can be figured out systematically by a sensitivity analysis. A comprehensive global sensitivity analysis, however, might be prohibitive by means …

Impact Responses Of Prestressing Tendons In Railway Concrete Sleepers In High Speed Rail Environments, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alex M. Remennikov

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Prestressed concrete sleepers (or railroad ties) are designed in order to carry and transfer the wheel loads from the rails to the ground and are installed as the crosstie beam support in railway track systems. They are subjected to impact loading conditions that are resulted from train operations over wheel or rail abnormalities, such as flat wheels, dipped rails, crossing transfers, rail squats, corrugation, etc. The magnitude of the shock load relies on various factors such as axle load, types of wheel/rail imperfections, speeds of vehicle, track stiffness, etc. This paper demonstrates the development of finite element modelling to evaluate …

Significantly Improved Photocurrent Response Of Zns-Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

ZnS-nanoparticles (NPs) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites with a high degree of crystallinity and high dispersity were successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method in the gelatin medium, during which the formation of ZnS NPs, reduction of graphene oxide and loading of ZnS NPs into the rGO surface occur simultaneously. Gelatin, as a natural capping agent, plays a significant role in controlling the degree of dispersion and coverage of ZnS NPs. The effect of rGO on the crystalline structure and optical properties of ZnS NPs were determined via X-ray diffraction, UV-visible diffused reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The ZnS-rGO composites …

Evaluating The Optical Properties Of Tio2 Nanofluid For A Direct Absorption Solar Collector May 2015

Evaluating The Optical Properties Of Tio2 Nanofluid For A Direct Absorption Solar Collector

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Recent studies specify that designated nanofluids may increase the proficiency of direct absorption solar thermal collectors. To determine the efficiency of nanofluids in solar applications, their capability to change light energy to thermal energy must be identified (i.e., the absorption spectrum of the solar material). In view of that, this study compares model predictions to spectroscopic measurements of extinction coefficients over wavelengths that are important for solar energy (200- 1100nm). In the first decade of nanofluid research, most of the focus was on measuring and modeling the fundamental thermophysical properties of nanofluids (i.e., thermal conductivity, density, viscosity, and convection coefficients). …

Love Is A Two Way Street, William W. Riggs, John Gilderbloom

William W. Riggs

A half a century ago, we were in love with our streets. They were also living things. They were the open-air living room of our society, the conduct for neighborhood play and discussion, the glue of our social fabric. One of the key urban theorists of the 20th century, Jane Jacobs wrote in Fortune Magazine that the street “…works harder than any other part of downtown. It is the nervous system; it communicates the flavor, the feel, the sights. It is the major point of transaction and communication. Users of downtown know very well that downtown needs not fewer streets, …
