Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

We perform an ab initio study of spin-polarized tunneling in epitaxial Co|SrTiO3|Co magnetic tunnel junctions with bcc Co(001) electrodes. We predict a large tunneling magnetoresistance in these junctions, originating from a mismatch in the majority- and minority-spin bands both in bulk bcc Co and at the Co|SrTiO3 interface. The intricate complex band structure of SrTiO3 enables efficient tunneling of the minority d electrons which causes the spin polarization of the Co|SrTiO3 interface to be negative in agreement with experimental data. Our results indicate that epitaxial Co|SrTiO3|Co magnetic tunnel junctions with bcc Co(001) electrodes …

Makara Journal of Technology

Design and Implementation of 1-2 GHz Stepped Frequency GPR for Buried Metal Detection. In this paper, we describe the design and realization steps of 1 – 2 GHz SFGPR (Stepped Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar) transceiver for metal detection under the ground. Before using prototyped GPR for detecting the metal under the ground, several of calibration processes must be performed, namely phase calibration and monocycle pulse waveform calibration. After completing the calibrations, this prototyped GPR would be ready for detecting a hidden object such as a metal plate 5 cm under the ground in our small test range size 25 cm …

Work In Progress - An Investigation Into The Effect Of An Institutional Honor Code Policy On Academic Behavior, Donald D. Carpenter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli, Matthew Mayhew

Materials Engineering

Research indicates significant cheating at institutions of higher learning; however, evidence indicates that a well-designed and clearly-communicated campus honor code might have a mitigating effect. This is the impetus behind the implementation of an Academic Honor Code Policy at a private university beginning in the fall of 2004. This situation presented a unique opportunity to investigate the potential of an academic honor code to change the culture and behavior at a university. This investigation will involve conducting a longitudinal study on the academic habits of students as they progress through the curriculum and include students whose academic careers began under …

The Ballet Model In Engineering Classes – What Works, What Doesn't, And What's New, Blair London, Lisa Deyo

Materials Engineering

Six different engineering courses were taught using aspects of the classical ballet instruction model in organization, teaching methods, and learning strategies. There was a strong focus on performance. The courses spanned sophomore to senior levels. Some aspects of the ballet model worked well: setting rules for the Sacred Space for learning, the beginning activity (“stretch”), the overall organization of the class session, communicating the known ideal, including historical background, and using demonstrations. Some aspects did not work (thus far): exams are not yet performances on stage, little practice or rehearsal occurs, little competition between students occurs, asking students questions in …

Development Of Palladium Nanowires, Chuanding Cheng Oct 2005

Development Of Palladium Nanowires, Chuanding Cheng

Doctoral Dissertations

Inherent limitations of traditional lithography have prompted the search for means of achieving self-assembly of nano-scale structures and networks for the next generation of electronic and photonic devices. The nanowire, the basic building block of a nanocircuit, has recently become the focus of intense research. Reports on nanowire synthesis and assembly have appeared in the scientific literature, which include Vapor-Liquid-Solid mechanism, template-based electrochemical fabrication, solvothermal or wet chemistry, and assembly by fluid alignment or microchannel networks. An ideal approach for practical application of nanowires would circumvent technical and economic constraints of templating. Here we report on the self-assembly of highly-ordered …

A Fe-Fd Hybrid Scheme For Solving Parabolic Two-Step Micro Heat Transport Equations In Irregularly Shaped Three Dimensional Double -Layered Thin Films Exposed To Ultrashort -Pulse Lasers, Brian R. Barron Oct 2005

A Fe-Fd Hybrid Scheme For Solving Parabolic Two-Step Micro Heat Transport Equations In Irregularly Shaped Three Dimensional Double -Layered Thin Films Exposed To Ultrashort -Pulse Lasers, Brian R. Barron

Doctoral Dissertations

Multi-layer thin films are important components in many micro-electronic devices. These films are often used when a single film layer is insufficient to meet devices specifications. The continued reduction in component size has the side effect of increasing the thermal stress on these films and consequently the devices they comprise. Understanding the transfer of heat-energy at the micro-scale is important for thermal processing using a pulse-laser. Often, micro-voids may be found in processed devices. This is due to thermal expansion. Such defects may cause an amplification of neighboring defects resulting in severe damage and consequently the failure of the device. …

Effect Of Interface States On Spin-Dependent Tunneling In Fe/Mgo/Fe Tunnel Junctions, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Julian P. Velev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Oct 2005

Effect Of Interface States On Spin-Dependent Tunneling In Fe/Mgo/Fe Tunnel Junctions, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Julian P. Velev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

The electronic structure and spin-dependent tunneling in epitaxial Fe/MgO/Fe(001) tunnel junctions are studied using first-principles calculations. For small MgO barrier thickness the minority-spin resonant bands at the two interfaces make a significant contribution to the tunneling conductance for the antiparallel magnetization, whereas these bands are, in practice, mismatched by disorder and/or small applied bias for the parallel magnetization. This explains the experimentally observed decrease in tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) for thin MgO barriers. We predict that a monolayer of Ag epitaxially deposited at the interface between Fe and MgO suppresses tunneling through the interface band and may thus be used to …

Systematic, Multisite Short-Range-Order Corrections To The Electronic Structure Of Disordered Alloys From First Principles: The Kkr Nonlocal Cpa From The Dynamical Cluster Approximation, D. A. Biava, Subhradip Ghosh, Duane D. Johnson, W. A. Shelton, Andrei V. Smirnov

Duane D. Johnson

Although the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential approximation (KKR-CPA) is used widely to configurationally average and get electronic structures and energies of disordered alloys, a single-site CPA misses local environment effects, including short-range order (SRO). A proposed nonlocal CPA (NLCPA) recovers translational invariance of the effective medium via k-space coarse graining from the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA), where corrections are systematic as cluster size increases. We implement a first-principles KKR-NLCPA/DCA and show the effects of environment, including SRO, on the electronic structures of fcc CuAu and bcc NiAl.

Design Of A Reliable Remote Surface Detector Based On Ultrasonic Pulse-Transit Technique To Detect Uneven & Non-Smooth Porous Snow Surfaces, Raman Attri Sep 2005

Design Of A Reliable Remote Surface Detector Based On Ultrasonic Pulse-Transit Technique To Detect Uneven & Non-Smooth Porous Snow Surfaces, Raman Attri

Raman K. Attri

This paper discusses design control techniques used to design ultrasonic pulse echo method based remote surface detector to detect objects with porous, un-even, irregular surfaces like snow. For such surfaces there is ample possibility of scatter of reflected beam in multiple directions, absorption of ultrasonic energy within the pores and reflected energy too feeble to detect. In some cases the reflected beam may altogether miss the receiver resulting in no surface detection at all. Scatter and penetration of ultrasonic energy at such irregular porous uneven surfaces poses great difficulties in designing a reliable Remote Surface detector. In this paper, we …

Scaling Relations For Dislocation Structure And Response, Richard Alan Lesar, M. Koslowski, Robb Thomson, J. M. Rickman Sep 2005

Scaling Relations For Dislocation Structure And Response, Richard Alan Lesar, M. Koslowski, Robb Thomson, J. M. Rickman

Richard Alan Lesar

A major goal in dislocation theory is the development of a coarse-grained method that would enable predictions of dislocation response without resolving the degrees of freedom of all the dislocations. While a number of possible coarse-grained theories have been proposed, all of these need information about structures at scales smaller than the coarse-graining volume. Here we present results from dislocation simulations that yield scaling relations with the hope that they can provide a framework for modeling the sub-scale dislocation structures and dynamics. For example, we show that dislocations have a self-similar (fractal) structure over wide range of stress/strain; dislocations move …

Nafion Emulsion Method For Fuel Cell Membrane-Electrode-Assembly Preparation, Chao-Yang Xia, Lin Zhuang

Journal of Electrochemistry

A Nafion emulsion method for fuel cell membrane-electrode-assembly (MEA) preparation was reported for the first time in this paper. 5 %(by mass) Nafion alcohol solution and non-polar solvent (e.g., cyclohexane) were ultrasonicallymixed to produce Nafion emulsion. The catalyst ink prepared using the thus-obtained Nafion emulsion can be directly cast onto Nafion membrane to make MEA. This method is simple in operation, and effectively preventsthe Nafion membrane swelling, hence is suitable for large-scale application. The MEA thus-prepared showed comparable catalyst efficiencywith respect to the popular transfer-method, and the preliminary performance in room-temperature H_(2)/O_(2 )fuel cell test was satisfying.
