Hydrogeological And Thermal Sustainability Of Geothermal Borehole Heat Exchangers, S. Emad Dehkordi
Hydrogeological And Thermal Sustainability Of Geothermal Borehole Heat Exchangers, S. Emad Dehkordi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Assessment of the current approach taken by guidelines and design methods of vertical closed loop heat exchangers shows that often groundwater flow is either disregarded or is not methodically incorporated. The state of scientific research in this arena reveals that overlooking the groundwater flow in the design procedure may not always be a correct assumption. The significance of advective heat transport compared to conduction is defined by the groundwater flux or Darcy velocity which heavily depends on the hydraulic conductivity of the ground, followed by the hydraulic gradient which has a relatively limited range. A sensitivity analysis on ground and …
Static And Seismic Soil Culvert Interaction, Osama Salem A. Abuhajar
Static And Seismic Soil Culvert Interaction, Osama Salem A. Abuhajar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Failures of box culverts under static and earthquake loads can cause significant economic loss. Therefore, it is important to investigate the soil-culvert interaction of box culverts to understand their responses to such loads. The response of buried box culverts is a complex soil-structure interaction problem, where the relative stiffness between the soil and the structure is a critical factor. Soil arching is an important aspect of the soil-culvert interaction problem, and results in the redistribution of free-field stresses due to the presence of buried structures and leads to an increase or decrease in the loading around box culverts.

Change In Pore Size Distribution Of Compacted Soil Layers And Its Effect On Solute Breakthrough Curves, Sara Karimi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
It is often useful to predict contaminant migration from waste containment systems, such as landfills, as part of the assessment of the overall impact of such systems on the receptor environment. In many instances, material properties, for example, those of the liner, are assumed to be constant. This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of considering constant material and transport parameters in the modelling of sodium and chloride breakthrough curves through a compacted soil layer using the commercial software, Pollute v.7. Experiments were conducted with three different mixtures of glass beads and varying amounts of kaolinite (30, 40 and …

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Helical piles are a deep foundation system that can be used to support pipelines, telecommunication and transmission towers, and low- and medium-rise buildings. Advantages of helical piles include: short installation time with minimal noise and vibration levels; can be installed with ease in limited accessibility site; and onsite quality control by measurement of installation torque.
The main objective of the current research is to assess the performance of steel fibre-reinforced helical pulldown micropiles (RHPM), and fibre-reinforced polymer-steel fibre- reinforced pulldown micropiles (FRP-RHPM) under axial and lateral monotonic and cyclic loading conditions.
The research methodology involved conducting full scale field testing …
Electrokinetic Dewatering Of Oil Sands Tailings, Yu Guo
Electrokinetic Dewatering Of Oil Sands Tailings, Yu Guo
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Oil sands tailings are the final product of oil sands processing and in the form of slurry with very low solid content. After sedimentation, due to a low hydraulic conductivity of the tailings, both dewatering and consolidating the tailings are difficult. Since electrokinetic (EK) is an effective method to consolidate low permeability soils, the objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of EK dewatering of MFT, a man-made geomaterial. Two series of tests were conducted in this study. In the first series, four EK cell tests were performed on oil sands tailings to measure the electroosmotic …
Flexural Behaviour Of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Tunnel Linings, Martin Blazejowski
Flexural Behaviour Of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Tunnel Linings, Martin Blazejowski
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The promotion of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) as a construction material for tunnel linings has prompted a number of researchers to focus on methods of evaluating their flexural strength and stiffness. This thesis presents the results of an experimental and numerical investigation of the flexural behaviour of full-scale steel fibre reinforced concrete tunnel lining segments. A series of a three-point flexure tests were performed to evaluate the maximum load carrying capacity, the load-deformation behaviour and crack propagation characteristics of these segments. The material properties of the steel fibre reinforced concrete were also studied, using both destructive and non-destructive methods. …

Thermal And Electrical Behaviors Of Selected Geomaterials, Joon Kyu Lee
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Geomaterials can be often classified into two groups: virgin geomaterials such as soil and rock, and by-product materials such as mine tailings, coal fly/bottom ash, foundry sand, kiln dust, blast furnace/steel slag, reclaimed concrete and asphalt. Studies on these materials and their mixtures have been carried out extensively for geoengineering applications, including the characterization of mechanical properties such as the strength, compressibility, compactivity and permeability, as well as mineralogical and geochemical properties. The goal of this study is to investigate the thermal and electrical properties of selected geomaterials and their mixtures for enhancement of knowledge and engineering applications. The thesis …
An Investigation Of Monotonic And Cyclic Behaviour Of Leda Clay, Kimberly K. Rasmussen
An Investigation Of Monotonic And Cyclic Behaviour Of Leda Clay, Kimberly K. Rasmussen
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The behaviour of a sensitive clay from Ottawa is investigated though strain- and stress-controlled cyclic simple shear, and resonant column tests. Strain-controlled tests were performed at frequencies 0.1 to 10Hz, and amplitudes 0.1% to 5%. Over this range of strain amplitudes there are large drops in stiffness. Strain amplitude has a greater effect on the generation of pore-pressures than frequency. Stress-controlled tests performed at a yield stress ratio of 1 had higher strength at low N but degraded more readily than a test at YSR =2. A novel method of remoulding clay and measuring the remoulding energy is also presented. …
Response Of Foundations To Random Cyclic Loads, Alireza Varshoi
Response Of Foundations To Random Cyclic Loads, Alireza Varshoi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Variable amplitude cyclic loads due to natural phenomena are common for laterally loaded piles. A series of small scale cyclic model test have been performed in the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory. Random loads from a boundary layer wind field were applied to a model consisting of a pile, pole and plate. The same setup was also tested under static conditions for comparison. Hyperbolic projection was used to represent the load – displacement relations. Initial stiffness and hyperbolic capacity were obtained from this method. The number of load cycles was found to affect the behavior of the laterally loaded piles. …
Performance Of Hollow Bar Micropiles Under Axial And Lateral Loads In Cohesive Soils, Ahmed Yehia Abd El-Aziz
Performance Of Hollow Bar Micropiles Under Axial And Lateral Loads In Cohesive Soils, Ahmed Yehia Abd El-Aziz
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The use of hollow core bars in micropiles has greatly increased over the past ten years. Hollow core construction, also known as “self drilled”, is becoming a popular option because it allows a faster installation processes and ground improvement at the same time. Despite the growing demand for hollow bar micropiles, little work has been devoted to evaluating the nominal bond strength between the micropile grout and the surrounding soil, especially in clayey soils. Moreover, the performance of such micropiles under different kinds of loading is still largely unknown and needs to be investigated.
In this study, a research methodology …

Thermal And Mechanical Studies Of Thin Spray-On Liner (Tsl) For Concrete Tunnel Linings, Taesang Ahn
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The thesis presents a summary of Thin Spray-On Liner (TSL) effects on concrete. Three aspects, fire insulation, adhesion strength on concrete surface and load carrying capacity (i.e. flexural strength) on segmental concrete liners, are presented. Small-scale to full-scale laboratory tests were conducted using ASTM standards or devised methods. The TSL effects on three aspects were then compared with the results for uncoated concrete specimens. Numerical analyses using TEMP/W for the thermal response of TSL and a FE program, ABAQUS for the mechanical response of TSL were respectively carried out and compared with the measured results. Additionally, numerical analyses in respect …
Seismic Microzonation Of Great Toronto Area And Influence Of Building Resonances On Measured Soil Responses, Dimitar Genchev Mihaylov
Seismic Microzonation Of Great Toronto Area And Influence Of Building Resonances On Measured Soil Responses, Dimitar Genchev Mihaylov
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A pilot seismic microzonation of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is used to establish the conditions and limitations of geophysical methods for site response investigations in city conditions. Maps of fundamental soil resonant frequencies, amplifications at these frequencies and interpolated average shear wave velocity of top 30 m of soil profile (VS- 30) used in soil classification were compared to the maps of drift thickness and surficial geology for the GTA. The non-applicability of the interpolated VS-30 map for site classification between measured test points is indicated. It is also shown that the soil response cannot be estimated properly using …

Geotechnique, Physico-Chemical Behaviour And A New Erosion Model For Mine Tailings Under Environmental Loading, Rozalina S. Dimitrova
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Comprehensive geotechnical characterisation of mine tailings is required for the design, construction and safe operation of mine waste management facilities against the large number of potential failure risks. It is important that the characterization is carried out under the stress range and drainage conditions relevant to those encountered in the field.
The present research utilized mine tailings samples from a copper/nickel base-metal mine. Kaolinite and bentonite clays were added to the mine tailings in order to study the effect of clay percentage and clay mineralogy on the behaviour of saturated tailings/clay systems with varying composition. Slurries with moderate or high …
Investigation Of Hybrid Monopile-Footing Foundation Systems Subjected To Combined Loading, Mohamed El-Marassi
Investigation Of Hybrid Monopile-Footing Foundation Systems Subjected To Combined Loading, Mohamed El-Marassi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Laterally loaded structures such as wind turbines, offshore platforms, earth retaining structures, bridge abutments and many other structures impose complex loading regimes on the supporting foundations. These foundations are typically subjected to combinations of vertical, horizontal and moment loadings resulting from the vertical self-weight of the foundation system, superstructure, soil fill and surface surcharge, in addition to significant lateral loads and moments due to soil pressures, wind loads, waves and currents. In the case of shallow foundations, the weight and dimensions must be sufficient to resist tilting and sliding, whilst at the same time preventing failure of the subsoil and …

Vibration Isolation Using In-Filled Geofoam Trench Barriers, Ashref Mohamed A. Alzawi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A significant amount of numerical and experimental research has been conducted to study the vibration isolation by wave barriers considering open trenches, in-filled concrete or bentonite trenches, sheet-pile walls, and rows of piles. A few studies have investigated the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam material as wave barriers, which indicated that in-filled geofoam trenches can be used as effective wave barriers. However, no engineering design method is available to date for the design of such type of wave barriers. This dissertation presents comprehensive experimental and numerical investigations on the use of in-filled geofoam trench barriers to scatter machine foundations …

The main objectives of this thesis are to: investigate the dynamic response and impedances of large-capacity helical piles; develop an analysis methodology for their dynamic response; and investigate their static axial compression and lateral behaviour, considering installation effects on their dynamic and static performances. The thesis presents the first full-scale vertical and horizontal dynamic field testing program executed on large-capacity …
Evaluation Of Wind-Induced Resuspension On The Performance Of A Mine Tailings Storage Facility, Laxmi Kant Kachhwal
Evaluation Of Wind-Induced Resuspension On The Performance Of A Mine Tailings Storage Facility, Laxmi Kant Kachhwal
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Proper management of sulphide rich reactive mine tailings is a growing concern for mining industries. Oxidation of tailings can release acids and toxic metals into the surroundings, which can potentially pollute the ecosystem. Confining tailings under shallow water covers is one of the most successfully applied technologies for long-term storage. The water has lower solubility and diffusivity of oxygen than air and can significantly reduce the influx of oxygen to the bed tailings. However, wind-induced waves and currents in the water can resuspend bed tailings and ultimately result in oxidation.
Extensive field investigations were carried out to evaluate the performance …

The Behaviour Of Cement Stabilized Clay At High Water Contents, Saeed Sasanian
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Artificial cementation of soft clays has been used for several years for different ground improvement projects. Although considerable work has been done to develop advanced machinery and techniques for the implementation of artificial cementation, less knowledge is available on the mechanisms involving the formation of the artificial structure and the resulting mechanical behaviour. The primary objectives of the present work were to investigate the formation of microstructure in artificially cemented material with Portland cement, find the relationships between cementitious bonding and clay mineralogy, and create constitutive frameworks for predicting the mechanical behaviour of cement-treated clays.
Qualitative and quantitative microstructural characterisation …
