Static Liquefaction Of Oil Sand Tailings: An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Saturation And Fines Content, Farshad Zehforoosh Dec 2021

Static Liquefaction Of Oil Sand Tailings: An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Saturation And Fines Content, Farshad Zehforoosh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The main goals of this research are to explore the influence of partial saturation and fine content on the shear response of oil sand tailings, to identify the liquefaction susceptibility under different initial states. Monotonic triaxial compression tests were carried out to understand the mechanical behavior of the saturated oil sand tailings with varying void ratios. Then the effect of fine content on the yield and critical shear strength, critical state line, and instability line was evaluated by increasing the fine content up to 50%. The experimental results revealed that the shear strength of the oil sand increases with fine …

Liquefaction Assessment Of Carbonate-Silica Silty Sands Using Energy, State Parameter And Shear Wave Velocity, Naemeh Naghavi Jul 2017

Liquefaction Assessment Of Carbonate-Silica Silty Sands Using Energy, State Parameter And Shear Wave Velocity, Naemeh Naghavi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The liquefaction behaviour and dynamic properties of reconstituted natural carbonate-silica silty sand samples were investigated in a series of monotonic and cyclic triaxial tests. The critical state parameters of the mixtures with different levels of fines were obtained through monotonic triaxial compression tests. Bender element tests were performed at the consolidation stage to characterize soil’s initial state and small strain properties. The results demonstrated that soil contraction capacity, liquefaction potential and undrained brittleness increase by increasing the state parameter. A general correlation between shear wave velocity and state parameter was established. The susceptibility and triggering of liquefaction under cyclic loading …

Miniature Cone Penetration Test On Loose Sand, Sepideh Damavandinejad Monfared Dec 2014

Miniature Cone Penetration Test On Loose Sand, Sepideh Damavandinejad Monfared

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Considering the difficulties associated with preparing loose sand samples in large calibration chambers and wide area of research on the behavior of loose sands, miniature calibration chamber experiments are used to perform cone penetration tests on soils in different states. A miniature cone calibration chamber has been designed and developed in this study. Nineteen tests have been performed on Ottawa sand and the results are compared to the available data in the literature. The accuracy of the results is validated by comparing the results with the suggested rate for the cone resistance in sands in literature. More specifically, results are …
