Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Silicon Microlenses For Ir-Ccd Image Sensors, Dhiren Pattnaik May 1998

Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Silicon Microlenses For Ir-Ccd Image Sensors, Dhiren Pattnaik

Theses

There is a growing trend in the study of Focal Plane Arrays(FPAs) of very small microlenses, used for a wide variety of imaging and sensing applications, to increase optical efficiency. Present day sensor technology might take a different direction altogether with the development of compact, high quality, high resolution imaging microlenses, which could make the fill factor >90%. A method to increase light sensitivity of Interline Transfer(IT) type image sensors is to position microlens FPAs on top of the image sensors. FPAs are structures of small lenses which focus the incoming light on the photo sensitive part of the image …

Field Emission And Breakdown Processes In Vacuum Gaps With Sio(X)-Coated Cathodes, Raymond Jack Allen Iii Apr 1998

Field Emission And Breakdown Processes In Vacuum Gaps With Sio(X)-Coated Cathodes, Raymond Jack Allen Iii

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Field emission of electrons is the major cause of electrical breakdown in high voltage systems in vacuum. The highest hold-off electric field of the carefully polished and cleaned stainless steel cathodes was increased to 70MV/m. Thin silicon monoxide, SiOx, cathode coatings reduced field emission and increased the hold-off field further. Coating the stainless steel cathodes with 2μ SiOx reduced the field emission current by at least two orders of magnitude at field of 50MV/m and increased the breakdown field to 140MV/m, doubling the breakdown voltage.

The increase in hold-off voltage with SiOx coatings is discussed in …

Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Using Filter Spawning, Kenneth A. Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation with Filter Spawning is used to detect and estimate partial actuator failures on the VISTA F-16. The truth model is a full six-degree-of-freedom simulation provided by Calspan and General Dynamics. The design models are chosen as 13-state linearized models, including first order actuator models. Actuator failures are incorporated into the truth model and design model assuming a "failure to free stream . Filter Spawning is used to include additional filters with partial actuator failure hypotheses into the Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) bank. The spawned filters are based on varying degrees of partial failures (in terms …

A Game-Theoretic Improvement Model For Stochastic Networks: Reliability Vs. Throughput, Jeffrey A. Schavland Mar 1998

A Game-Theoretic Improvement Model For Stochastic Networks: Reliability Vs. Throughput, Jeffrey A. Schavland

Theses and Dissertations

Prescriptive models used to allocate resources for network improvement traditionally have used reliability or flow as Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs). Such metrics do not give value to efforts which make a component more difficult to exploit. This study developed an entirely new MOE for stochastic network improvement, flow damage utility, which uses a two person, zero-sum, non-cooperative game to optimize a probabilistic network for an estimate of expected flow minus performance degradation after a worst case component loss. A multiple criteria optimization problem that uses flow damage utility and an analogous, previously developed metric for the reliability problem is used …

Linear Reconstruction Of Non-Stationary Image Ensembles Incorporating Blur And Noise Models, Stephen D. Ford Mar 1998

Linear Reconstruction Of Non-Stationary Image Ensembles Incorporating Blur And Noise Models, Stephen D. Ford

Theses and Dissertations

Two new linear reconstruction techniques are developed to improve the resolution of images collected by ground-based telescopes imaging through atmospheric turbulence. The classical approach involves the application of constrained least squares (CLS) to the deconvolution from wavefront sensing (DWFS) technique. The new algorithm incorporates blur and noise models to select the appropriate regularization constant automatically. In all cases examined, the Newton-Raphson minimization converged to a solution in less than 10 iterations. The non-iterative Bayesian approach involves the development of a new vector Wiener filter which is optimal with respect to mean square error (MSE) for a non-stationary object class degraded …

Modified Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (M3Ae) For Simultaneous Parameter And State Estimation, Mikel M. Miller Mar 1998

Modified Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (M3Ae) For Simultaneous Parameter And State Estimation, Mikel M. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

In many estimation problems, it is desired to estimate system states and parameters simultaneously. However, inherent to traditional estimation architectures of the past, the designer has had to make a trade-off decision between designs intended for accurate state estimation versus designs concerned with accurate parameter estimation. This research develops one solution to this trade-off decision by proposing a new architecture based on Kalman filtering (KF) and Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) techniques. This new architecture, the Modified-MMAE (M3AE), exploits the benefits of an MMAE designed for accurate parameter estimation, and yet performs at least as well in state …

Performance Of Imaging Laser Radar In Rain And Fog, Kathleen M. Campbell Mar 1998

Performance Of Imaging Laser Radar In Rain And Fog, Kathleen M. Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force is currently developing imaging laser radar systems (ladar) for use on precision guided munitions and other imaging systems. Scientists at Eglin Air Force Base, in conjunction with Wright Laboratories, are testing a 1.06-um wavelength ladar system and need to understand the weather effects on the ladar images. As the laser beam propagates through the atmosphere, fog droplets and raindrops can cause image degradation, and these image degradations are manifested as either dropouts or false returns. An analysis of the dropouts and false returns helped to quantify the performance of the system in adverse weather conditions. Statistical analysis …

Channel-Mismatch Compensation In Speaker Identification Feature Selection And Adaptation With Artificial Neural Networks, Edmund A. Fitzgerald Mar 1998

Channel-Mismatch Compensation In Speaker Identification Feature Selection And Adaptation With Artificial Neural Networks, Edmund A. Fitzgerald

Theses and Dissertations

We develop and present results of an artificial neural network (ANN) based compensation technique for mismatched classifier training and testing conditions in speaker identification (SID). One ANN per feature per speaker is trained to perform a mapping of that feature from a corrupted condition to an undistorted condition. Therefore, a classifier trained under one condition may be used to classify data collected under a different condition. Speech utterances from 168 speakers, collected in a studio, and also re-recorded after transmission over telephone networks, are used for developing and testing the method. Peak formant resonant frequencies, their bandwidths, and pitch are …

Performance Analysis Of The Interference Adaptation Dynamic Channel Allocation Technique In Wireless Communication Networks, Ziqiang Xu Jan 1998

Performance Analysis Of The Interference Adaptation Dynamic Channel Allocation Technique In Wireless Communication Networks, Ziqiang Xu

Dissertations

Dynamic channel allocation (DCA) problem is one of the major research topics in the wireless networking area. The purpose of this technique is to relieve the contradiction between the increasing traffic load in wireless networks and the limited bandwidth resource across the air interface. The challenge of this problem comes from the following facts: a) even the basic DCA problem is shown to be NP-complete (none polynomial complete); b) the size of the state space of the problem is very large; and c) any practical DCA algorithm should run in real-time.

Many heuristic DCA schemes have been proposed in the …

Enhanced Terahertz Pulse Generation And Detection Using Electric Field Singularities In Photo-Conducting Antennas, Yi Cai

Dissertations

In recent years, generation of ultra-short electromagnetic pulses with frequency components in the terahertz (THz) range has been achieved by various techniques. Among those different methods, photo-conducting antennas have proven to be the most efficient source of THz radiation. THz spectrometers utilizing such photo-conducting antennas as transmitters and receivers are meanwhile routinely used for spectroscopic studies in the frequency regime between 0.1 to 5THz, which can be covered by neither conventional optical nor microwave spectrometers. However, THz emission power from the existing photo-conducting antenna is not sufficient for many applications (such as electro-optic sampling for real time THz detection and …

Design And Characterization Of Ultra High Frame Rate Burst Image Sensors, Rakesh K. Kabra Jan 1998

A Design-For Retirement Rating Model For Environmentally Conscious Products, Xin He

Theses

Design-For-Retirement is a concept that allows one to design a product such that its retirement time and post-life treatment are optimized to lead to the minimum environmental impact and maximum financial gain. Retired product parts or subassemblies face three primary multi-lifecycle engineering treatments. The first one is to recondition them for reuse in the next lifecycle. The second one is to convert their post life parts into a material form for recycling back into new parts. The last is to dump or landfill them. Each option has a significantly different environmental cost-benefit ratio. Another important concern is the dismantling process …

Wavelet-Based Digital Image Restoration, Viviana Sandor Jan 1998

Wavelet-Based Digital Image Restoration, Viviana Sandor

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Digital image restoration is a fundamental image processing problem with underlying physical motivations. A digital imaging system is unable to generate a continuum of ideal pointwise measurements of the input scene. Instead, the acquired digital image is an array of measured values. Generally, algorithms can be developed to remove a significant part of the error associated with these measure image values provided a proper model of the image acquisition system is used as the basis for the algorithm development. The continuous/discrete/continuous (C/D/C) model has proven to be a better alternative compared to the relatively incomplete image acquisition models commonly used …

Since the advent of radar in the 1940s, it has been well known that water drops composing precipitation scatter microwaves in a predictable manner. This characteristic of early. radar has lead to the present day Weather Surveillance Radar (WSR-88D) or NEXRAD systems, operated by the National Weather Service (NWS). In parallel to the evolution of weather radar for measuring precipitation over large areas, remote networks of rain gauges have been deployed and managed by agencies such as the Florida Water Management Districts. Since the recent deployment of the NWS network of WSR-88D, as well as the recent launch of the …

Static Compaction Of Test Sequences For Synchronous Sequential Circuits, Lijie Qi Jan 1998

Static Compaction Of Test Sequences For Synchronous Sequential Circuits, Lijie Qi

Dissertations and Theses

Today, VLSI design has progressed to a stage where it needs to incorporate methods of testing circuits. The Automatic Test Pattern Generation (ATPG) is a very attractive method and feasible on almost any combinational and sequential circuit.

Currently available automatic test pattern generators (ATPGs) generate test sets that may be excessively long. Because a cost of testing depends on the test length. compaction techniques have been used to reduce that length. The motivation for studying test compaction is twofold. Firstly, by reducing the test sequence length. the memory requirements during the test application and the test application time are reduced. …

Networking 8-Bit Embedded Controllers, Using The Controller Area Network Method, Brett Wilkinson Jan 1998
