Over the last two years Olin College has been defining and implementing a provisional system to develop and assess student competency levels. The system particularly emphasizes the importance of creating a community of practice that includes not only faculty but also staff and students. In this paper we provide an overview of the design process, and comment on the results of our first year of implementing the system.

Engineers today must be able to communicate and collaborate in teams. They also must be comfortable making adjustments within the team to maintain flow and progress toward project goals. With these goals in mind, students in a first-semester engineering seminar course were asked to videotape a team meeting in their design course and to write a self-reflection paper after viewing their video. After analyzing the video, students were asked to provide clear suggestions in their self-reflection paper for improving their own and their team's performance. Our preliminary analysis showed that video-supported reflections: 1) may be more effective than memory for …

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia teaching and learning processes was duly certified to ISO 9001:2000. One of the top management commitments is to meet Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia (EAC) program accreditation requirements. EAC adopts the American Board of Engineering and Technology 2000 (ABET) principles which promote outcome based education (OBE) learning process. OBE calls for the evaluation of the course learning outcomes (LO) as specified in each Course Outline. Performance Measurement has been largely dependent on students' performance in carrying out tasks such as tests, quizzes or submission of assignments. Evaluation on the performance outputs; …

Spatial Distribution Of Commercial Banks In Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria, I B. Abdullahi, M A. Ijaiya, A Abdulraheem, R I. Abdulkadir, R O. Ibrahim Jan 2011

Spatial Distribution Of Commercial Banks In Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria, I B. Abdullahi, M A. Ijaiya, A Abdulraheem, R I. Abdulkadir, R O. Ibrahim

Confluence Journal of Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria

The spatial distribution of banks in any geographic entity determines the level of accessibility to its services by the public. This study examined the pattern of banks distribution in Ilorin metropolis. Field survey was employed in determining the number of available commercial banks and their respective distances between each other. The spatial analysis technique such as the nearest neighbour analysis as used ascertain the degree of clustering, density and the average distance taken to access these services. The study revealed that about 96% of the total number of banks are situated in the Central Business District which exhibited a very …

Since 2003, Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektrik, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai subscribed to good practices as required by their teaching and learning processes which was duly certified to ISO 9001:2000. It was developed based on the American Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) requirements which promote the Outcome Based Education (OBE) learning process. Collaborative and cooperative learning (CCL) technique was applied to inculcate the necessary generic skills attributes. A series of assessment were designed to validate such learning outcomes. Final exam questions were evaluated using Bloom’s Taxonomy. The tests employed include index of difficulty and index of discrimination. This paper presents …

At the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai campus, Communication System is a core subject offered to senior students of the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program. The student enrolment is the largest. This paper describes the continual quality improvement performance measured for the learning process of the students. Cooperative Learning (CL) technique has been successively introduced, a serious continuous effort in implementing alternative teaching method to enhance student learning process and inculcate generic skills that have been noticeably lacked among students and recent graduates. It was found that all CL classes achieved impressive 100% passes, with >80% achieved a …
