Student Affairs Professionals Accruing Social Capital: Examining Bias Response Teams, Lucy Lepeau, J.T. Snipes, Hilary Zimmerman, Demetri Morgan
Demetri L. Morgan
One way that institutions have responded to hostile campus environments for minoritized students is by creating bias response teams. Based on a larger study, researchers use Rhoads and Black’s (1995) conceptualization of student affairs professionals as transformative educators and Stanton-Salazar’s (2011) framework of how institutional agents use social capital to examine how student affairs practitioners accrue social capital when responding to bias incidents. Our findings connect to student affairs professionals’ ongoing development of the equity, diversity, and inclusion professional competency

The field of school counseling is becoming increasingly evidence-based and results-driven. As a way to help Massachusetts’ schools develop school counseling programs, the Massachusetts School Counselors Association created the Massachusetts Accountability Report Card (MARC). We are school counseling interns at TechBoston Academy, a Boston Public School. Over the course of the 2010-2011 school year, we measured the effectiveness of our interventions and compiled them into a “MARC Jr.” The information we will present is a review of our MARC Jr., which focused on our school counseling curriculum for 11th grade students.

Dr. Charles W. Richburg III
Abstract Black male student athletes' enrolled in community colleges are a vastly understudied population. Statistically, the success rate of earning an associate degree and transferring to a four year institution of higher education is dismal. The focus of this study was to capture the perceptions of Black male student athletes and student support services providers as they pertained to access, use, and delivery of services. Another focus of this study was to identify ways in which Black male student athletes and student support services providers could help to improve delivery of those services. Participants for this study included three Black …

Social Class And Classism: Expanding Multicultural Awareness, Karrie Swan, Lane Jessica
Karrie L Swan
Broadening multicultural competency through social advocacy is becoming increasingly important in the field of counseling. Despite calls for understanding diverse cultural constructs, there have been relatively few calls for understanding the role poverty and social class plays in counseling and supervision. In this presentation, participants will learn how social class worldview influences the process of counseling, the counseling relationship and supervisory relationship. The presenters will also present a model for how counselors can engage in social justice practices that improve the lives of clients affected by poverty. 1) Participants will learn about the impact of social class and classism. 2) …

Attendees will learn how to incorporate mindfulness-based relationship practices into clinical supervision. Through present awareness and thoughtful attention to intentionality, mindfulness-based practices can lead to strengthened relationships, increased problem-solving skills, greater acceptance of self and others, and increased mutual empathy. Participants will experientially discover the benefits of mindfulness-based practices and learn how to incorporate mindfulness-based relationship practices into the supervisor-supervisee relationship. 1) Participants will learn about the existing research on the impact of mindfulness-based practices, as well as the importance and effectiveness of how mindfulness practices enhance relationships. 2) Participants will learn how to incorporate the mindfulness-based relationship approach into …

To maintain competitiveness in the global economy, United States policymakers and national leaders are increasing their attention to producing workers skilled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Given the growing minority population in the country, it is critical that higher education policies, pedagogies, climates, and initiatives are effective in promoting racial and ethnic minority students’ educational attainment in STEM. Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) have shown efficacy in facilitating the success of racial and ethnic minority students in STEM and are collectively responsible for producing nearly one-third of the nation’s minority STEM graduates. In Fostering Success of Ethnic and Racial …

This study reviewed 4,457 articles from 1998 to 2007 in American Counseling Association division-affiliated journals to identify research articles published in counseling; 1,139 articles (25.6%) were quantitatively research based. The authors provide details related to quantitative research publications, including individual journal contribution to the research base, focus areas for research, and independent and dependent variables highlighted by researchers. One summary finding was that only 6% of counseling research articles explored effectiveness of counseling interventions.

Perceptions Of Family Support Among Students Of Color At A Predominantly White University, Dina C. Maramba, Robert T. Palmer
Perceptions Of Family Support Among Students Of Color At A Predominantly White University, Dina C. Maramba, Robert T. Palmer
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
The challenge of facilitating the retention and persistence of students of color in higher education continues. While research has focused on internal factors of the college environment important to the success of students of color at predominantly White institutions (PWIs), this qualitative study examines an external factor—family support and its interconnectedness with the success and persistence of students of color. More specifically, the findings emphasize the importance of family support for this population attending PWIs. Implications for practice and future research are offered.

Although ambiguity exists regarding how states must respond to the mandates of Fordice to dismantle dual systems of education in previously segregated states, several scholars note Fordice should manifest itself in the enhancement of public Black colleges. Responding to Fordice, the state of Maryland entered into an agreement with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) to make its Black colleges comparable with their White counterparts. While Maryland claims that it has satisfied its agreement with OCR, findings of this study challenge this assertion. Data from AAUP, University System of Maryland [USM], and the Morgan State Office of Institutional research show …

Both predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are experiencing low academic persistence rates among Black males. While researchers have focused on factors facilitating the retention and persistence for Black males at PWIs, a paucity of contemporary research has focused on the academic and social experiences of Black males at HBCUs. We used in-depth interview methods to investigate the academic and social experiences of 11 Black males, who entered a public HBCU through its remedial or developmental studies program and persisted to graduation. Although several themes emerged from this study, special attention was placed on the …

Shaping Success Among Black Males In An Hbcu: A Study Of Barriers And Benefits, Robert T. Palmer, T. Elon Dancy
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
Attrition for Black men is a serious problem in higher education. While researchers have explored factors of retention for Black men attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs), less research explains factors underlying the success of Black men attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), particularly those men who are academically unprepared. Eleven Black men, who entered a public, urban HBCU through its pre-college program and persisted to graduation, indicated that their social networks play a vital role in facilitating retention and persistence. The results from this study are transferable to other HBCUs which seek to enhance retention among Black male collegians.
