The Impact Of The Lead Teacher Professional Learning Community Within The Rice University Mathematics Leadership Institute, J. Sack, N. Kamau
The Impact Of The Lead Teacher Professional Learning Community Within The Rice University Mathematics Leadership Institute, J. Sack, N. Kamau
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Now in its fourth year, Rice University’s Mathematics Leadership Institute (MLI) has developed over sixty high school mathematics Lead Teachers. We focus on how membership in MLI has impacted participant teachers’ professional lives. The Lead Teacher community that emerged during MLl’s first Summer Leadership Institute embodies the characteristics of a sustaining and coherent knowledge community where teachers are able to share their secret “stories of practice in safe places . . . in order to make their personal practical knowledge explicit to themselves and to others” [1]. This article includes stories of individual teachers who refused to sacrifice hours of …

Formulating A State Approach To Professional Development, R. E. Howard, S. Sarani, J. Woods
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
When viewed from the perspective of an entire state's needs, the challenges of designing professional development to meet the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind legislation of 2001 are daunting. In Oklahoma, the concerns about delivering to rural and urban populations which contain a variety of underserved populations are further complicated by the differences in the way science and mathematics are structured as disciplines. We describe two model programs, one in science and one in mathematics, which take much different approaches. However, the programs have three common elements that make them highly successful. Each program engages teachers strongly, …

Helping Kindergarteners Make Sense Of Numbers To 100, L. B. Jaslow, V. R. Jacobs
Helping Kindergarteners Make Sense Of Numbers To 100, L. B. Jaslow, V. R. Jacobs
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The authors share what was learned about kindergarteners' abilities to make sense of numbers to 100 when one of the authors, Linda Jaslow, took over a kindergarten class from February through the end of the school year. Through examples of how she engaged her students in nine weeks of problem solving and discussions focused on making sense of the number system, we provide evidence that the children grew substantially in their ability to count and show understanding when counting by 10's and using 10's during problem solving. Suggestions for tasks to promote continued growth are also provided. Throughout this teaching …

Connecting Mathematics And The Applied Science Of Energy Conservation, R. E. Carbone, J. M. Pearce
Connecting Mathematics And The Applied Science Of Energy Conservation, R. E. Carbone, J. M. Pearce
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
To effectively teach science in the elementary classroom, pre-service K-8 teachers need a basic understanding of the underlying concepts of physics, which demand a strong foundation in mathematics. Unfortunately, the depth of mathematics understanding of prospective elementary teachers has been a growing and serious concern for several decades. To overcome this challenge, a two-pronged attack was used in this study. First. students in mathematics courses were coupled with physical science courses by linking registration to ensure co-requisites were taken. This alone improved passing rates. Secondly, an energy conservation project was introduced in both classes that intimately tied the theoretical mathematics …
Analysis Of Factors Influencing West Virginia Secondary Biology And Science Teacher Attrition Rates, Seth Perry
Analysis Of Factors Influencing West Virginia Secondary Biology And Science Teacher Attrition Rates, Seth Perry
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The high rate of attrition for beginning teachers has been blamed on many factors. Nationally these include low pay, urban versus rural school settings, age, with younger teachers leaving sooner, and other variables making a complex problem with no clear component responsible for the loss of teachers. This study examined the self reported variables that contribute to high school teachers in West Virginia leaving their profession. An electronic survey instrument was distributed to current secondary teachers across the state. Teachers were asked to respond to questions related to professional satisfaction, perceived value from students and parents, administrative support, content versus …
The Impact Of Collective Teacher Efficacy On Student Achievement In High School Science, Mark W. Burcham
The Impact Of Collective Teacher Efficacy On Student Achievement In High School Science, Mark W. Burcham
Education Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation was designed to examine the impact of collective teacher efficacy on high school science achievement by looking at relationships among collective teacher efficacy, its two constructs, group competence and group task analysis, and high school science achievement scores at four rural high schools in Northwestern North Carolina.
The researcher gathered historical test data from the testing coordinator from the school system and then administered the Collective Teacher Efficacy Instrument, developed by Goddard, Hoy, and Woolfolk Hoy (2000), to 24 science teachers from the four high schools. Using this information, the researcher conducted statistical analyses to determine the relationships …

The Effects Of Teacher Stability On Third Grade Student Achievement As Measured By The North Carolina End-Of-Grade Tests In Reading And Mathematics, Juddson W. Starling
Education Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation was designed to examine the effects of teacher stability on student achievement as measured by the North Carolina End-of-Grade tests in reading and mathematics for third grade students. The perceptions of third grade teachers and elementary school principals concerning issues with teacher stability were also examined. Accountability for public schools in North Carolina has driven educators to find ways to increase student achievement. Teacher stability is a variable that can be controlled by educators in an attempt to increase student achievement.
The writer gathered test data from a target school district and analyzed test scores by the number …

Secondary Preservice Teachers' Understanding Of Euclidean Geometry, Karen Sabey
Secondary Preservice Teachers' Understanding Of Euclidean Geometry, Karen Sabey
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The lack of mathematical understanding of elementary preservice teachers with respect to many mathematical topics has been well documented. Far fewer studies have been conducted on any content area of knowledge of secondary teachers and even less in the mathematics content area. The assumption by the general population is that mathematics majors are adequately prepared to teach the content of secondary mathematics because they major in mathematics. Mathematics educators, however, note the lack of conceptual understandings in many content areas in these mathematics teaching majors. While mathematics educators are aware of this deficiency, there is little research data at the …
The Third Space: The Use Of Self-Study To Examine The Culture Of A Science Classroom, Dashia M. Magee
The Third Space: The Use Of Self-Study To Examine The Culture Of A Science Classroom, Dashia M. Magee
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Science educators are in the position to create bridges between their students and the world of science (Aikenhead, 1996, 1999). This connection has often been described as the third space (Bhabha, 1994; Moje, Collazo, Carrillo, & Marx, 2001; Wallace, 2004), which is represented as a combination or a meeting of the students' world and the world of science. In this study, I examined my role in creating the third space through the use of self-study. Self-study is a form of research, educators use to understand their practice (Austin & Senese, 2004; Loughran, 2004; Northfield & Loughran, 1996). It is a …
Inquiry-Based Instruction In Geometry: The Impact On End Of Course Geometry Test Scores, Betty Lewis
Inquiry-Based Instruction In Geometry: The Impact On End Of Course Geometry Test Scores, Betty Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research examining instruction in geometry and standardized tests suggests that students have difficulty grasping geometry concepts and developing problem solving skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the use of inquiry-based strategies in a geometry class and achievement on the end of course test (EOCT) and to analyze qualitatively the implementation of inquiry-based instruction. Embedded in the theoretical framework of constructivism, inquiry-based instruction gives students skills to become independent learners. Addressing an issue in mathematics education, the primary research question focused on how to improve scores on a standardized geometry test. This mixed methods study …
A Phenomenological Study Of Assessment Methods In The Inquiry -Based Science Classroom: How Do Educators Decide?, Gina G. Tash
A Phenomenological Study Of Assessment Methods In The Inquiry -Based Science Classroom: How Do Educators Decide?, Gina G. Tash
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of science educators as they select and develop assessment methods for inquiry learning. Balancing preparations for standardized tests and authentic inquiry assessment experiences can be challenging for science educators. The review of literature revealed that current research focused on instructional methods and assessment, students' assessment experiences, and teachers' instructional methods experiences. There remains a gap in current literature regarding the experiences of science educators as they select and develop assessment methods for inquiry learning. This study filled the gap by providing a description of the experiences of science educators …

Algebra Rules Object Boxes As An Authentic Assessment Task Of Preservice Elementary Teacher Learning In A Mathematics Methods Course, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan
Open Educational Resources
The purpose of this study was to describe elementary preservice teachers’ difficulties with understanding algebraic generalizations that were set in an authentic context. Fifty-eight preservice teachers enrolled in an elementary mathematics methods course participated in the study. These students explored and practiced with authentic, hands-on materials called “object boxes,” then created sets of their own object box materials. Each algebra rules object box contained materials to illustrate and describe four different algebraic generalizations, or “rules.” The variables “n” and “z” were used in each of the generalizations. For each generalization, there was a set of objects attached to a piece …

Helping Students Develop Mathematical Habits Of Mind: A Joint Panel Session At The 2009 Jmm Conference, Kien Lim, Kristin Camenga
Helping Students Develop Mathematical Habits Of Mind: A Joint Panel Session At The 2009 Jmm Conference, Kien Lim, Kristin Camenga
Kien H Lim
Cuoco, Goldenberg, and Mark advocate habits of mind as an organizing principle for a mathematics curriculum where students learn to be “pattern sniffers, experimenters, describers, tinkerers, inventors, visualizers, conjecturers, and guessers.” Harel regards habits of mind as interiorized ways of thinking—conceptual tools that are necessary for constructing mathematical objects. Presenters for this session offer various perspectives and strategies for helping students develop mathematical habits of mind, including examples from different content areas and at different levels.
