Digital Learning: An Australian Research Agenda, Gerald White

Dr Gerald K. White

The purpose of this paper is to provide some suggestions for consideration of directions for Australian educational research about ICT in education, more recently being called digital learning. A number of agencies in Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA have already embarked on developing research agendas and undertaking research into the use of digital learning. This report highlights some of the significant areas in which research has been undertaken and isolates those areas where there may be a need for further research or where there are gaps in the research agenda for Australia. This paper is …

Teaching In An Online Environment: Group Work For Critical Thinking, Aimee Dechambeau Jan 2009

Teaching In An Online Environment: Group Work For Critical Thinking, Aimee Dechambeau

Aimee deChambeau

Working in groups online has a wide variety of benefits for both learners and instructors. Understanding how students' critical thinking skills benefit from group work can motivate us as instructors to create group projects specifically for online learning situations.

Expanding The Space Of F2f: Writing Centers And Audio-Visual-Textual Conferencing, Melanie Yergeau, Kathryn Wozniak, Peter Vandenberg Aug 2008

Expanding The Space Of F2f: Writing Centers And Audio-Visual-Textual Conferencing, Melanie Yergeau, Kathryn Wozniak, Peter Vandenberg

Kathryn Wozniak

Able to link tutors across distance while closely approximating the tenor of face-to-face tutoring (f2f), synchronous audio-video-textual conferencing (AVT) is a semiotically rich medium that sustains critical “social cues” and enhances interaction and exchange. The authors theorize and demonstrate the potential of synchronous digital exchange, including functions that surpass the affordances of paper-based f2f tutorials—such as real-time modeling and web-based referencing.

Fulfilling The Dream : An Online Early Childhood Teacher Education Course, Pauline Taylor

Associate Professor Pauline Taylor-Guy

This paper presents a study into the motivations, aspirations and characteristics of students who embarked on a new wholly-online early childhood teacher preparation program introduced at James Cook University in 2007. The inquiry contributes to a number of areas where there is currently little research. Australian studies into the experiences of first-year undergraduates focus on on-campus students, not on students who engage with tertiary studies wholly online, nor do they specifically relate to preservice teacher education. Contemporary research into e-learning is predominantly based on blended learning rather than solely online modes of study. In addition, there is little literature relating …

Modelling And Applications In Pisa, Ross Turner

Ross Turner

Several test items from the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) are now in the public domain. Some of these incorporate elements of modelling. This paper highlights a selection of those items, shows some interesting student outcomes such as gender differences and item difficulty, and poses some questions about the implications of these items for school mathematics.
