Experiences Of African Women In Stem Careers: A Systematic Literature Review., Kaluwa Siwale, Gwamaka Mwalemba, Ulrike Rivett
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
The discourse on women's underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) mainly centres on the global north, leaving a gap in understanding the perspectives of African women in STEM. To address this, a systematic literature review was conducted to explore African women's experiences in STEM careers and education. After applying inclusion and criteria, 18 published articles were analysed. 8 key issues emerge: work environment, education system, work-life balance, gender-based stereotypes, racial bias, sexual harassment, inadequate support/mentorship, and self-imposed limits. These themes intertwine, with some aspects influencing others. Grasping the complexities and interactions of these factors provides insights into challenges …

Understanding The Impact Of Academic Advising On Student Development In A Higher Education Institution In Liberia, Lendeh Seboe
Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association
Academic advisors are required to utilize relevant frameworks for professional development and competence in the process. This paper aimed to understand the impact of faculty advising on student development in a higher education institution in Liberia. The findings indicate an overall positive impact of academic advising on student development with perseverance, decision-making, self-study, enhanced self-esteem, and growth and stability as key phenomena in understanding the overall impact of academic advising on student development.

INTRODUCTION:
While health, wellness, and healthcare are essential to every human being, not much is known about the health and healthcare experiences of transgender students on college campuses. Understanding these healthcare experiences are important because when we recognize them, we can establish a healthy relationship of trust. There is a growing number of transgender students on West Chester University campus, who felt they were not getting the appropriate support and care. As a result, a project was started at student health services to help transgender students effectively access sensitive and welcoming care and support.
METHODS:
To address the needs of …
The Impact Of An Academic Summer Bridge Program For At-Risk College Students, Emma Bynum
The Impact Of An Academic Summer Bridge Program For At-Risk College Students, Emma Bynum
Scholars Day Conference
Often at-risk students face emotional, social, financial, and academic challenges that can potentially hinder their scholarly performance. The Tiger Success Bridge Program, organized by the Academic Success Center at Ouachita Baptist University, actively allied with at-risk students to encourage and equip these students for success in their undergraduate education. This study analyzed quantitative data collected from the Tiger Success Bridge Program (TSBP), as well as, included qualitative research from TSBP and the Peer Mentor Program. Overall, results show a positive impact of the TSBP and the Peer Mentor Program for at-risk students at Ouachita Baptist University.
Military-Affiliated Student Experiences In Post-Secondary Education, Cole T. Hendrix
Military-Affiliated Student Experiences In Post-Secondary Education, Cole T. Hendrix
ATU Research Symposium
Abstract
This paper is intended to learn about the experiences of military-affiliated students in post-secondary education by surveying veterans, service members, and dependents on what resources they have available, what resources they would like to have, and comparing between 2-year, 4-year, public, and private institutions. Participants were surveyed at five different institutions. Three closed-ended questions asked for background and other disadvantaged identifiers. Three open-ended questions ask in detail about their experiences at their institution. Students at public 4-year institutions received the best assistance with room to improve. Institutions of higher learning would benefit their military-affiliated students by providing a military-affiliated …

[Phi Delta Lambda Sponsored Session] "Scholar Adventures": Bibliographic Detective Work As An Academic Librarian, Emily Spunaugle, Karen Knudson
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Academic librarians support the research of their college or university community, but also conduct their own research. This presentation focuses on the intersection of the two, featuring the presenter's experience solving bibliographic mysteries of unique 18th century pamphlets and tracking down books heisted from her library 30 years ago.
Emily D. Spunaugle is Assistant Professor, Humanities and Rare Books Librarian at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Her research is at the intersection of book history and women's writings of the long eighteenth century and appears in Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, Romantic Circles, Libraries: Culture, History, and …
Strategies For Supporting College Students Experiencing Grief, Rachel A. Guimond
Strategies For Supporting College Students Experiencing Grief, Rachel A. Guimond
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Grief and loss are a shared human experience. However, lacking cultural awareness of the impact of grief and insufficient social support can make managing the loss of a loved one very challenging for students. One strategy to support students who experience loss during college is the development of a course that addresses content related to the experience within supportive academic relationships. This presentation will explore research findings about student experiences of grief on college campuses and evidence-based practices for the development and implementation of an academic course on grief.

Specifications Grading Has Improved My Courses!, Bruce J. Heyen
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Specifications grading is a way of "restoring rigor, motivating students, and saving faculty time" as stated in the title of Linda Nilson's book promoting this method. While there are many variations across disciplines, I will present how I am using specifications grading in my Organic Chemistry courses. I label course objectives as essential or non-essential, and students must master these with a quiz score of 80% or greater to obtain the points. Students are allowed multiple attempts to master course objectives.
Literature Review Of Practical Insights Into The Use Of Brain Science And Learning Technology To Enhance Stem Student Learning, Keith Schimmel
Literature Review Of Practical Insights Into The Use Of Brain Science And Learning Technology To Enhance Stem Student Learning, Keith Schimmel
Scholar Week 2016 - present
In recent years, college students, including those at Olivet Nazarene University, have experienced an increase in mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. Researchers think technology is a significant contributor to this trend with social media undermining a viewer’s dignity through constant comparison and ruthless competition for attention. However, social media and teaching/learning technologies also have the potential to enhance efficient, effective student learning. This paper will present the best practices for use of social media and teaching/learning technologies based on a literature review in these areas.
The literature review will seek to tie together knowledge and best practices …

Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
Colleges/universities must think of innovative methods for attracting students to their campuses. Certificate programs have proven to do this. This presentation will address the decisions to offer certificate programs, the advantages and disadvantages for doing so, and will take participants through the step-by-step process of implementing these types of programs.

Annual Research Symposium
Hypothesis/Purpose: In this report we present a case of a 20-year-old female with congenital intellectual disability, stunted growth, and hypothyroidism. Competitive genetic hybridization (CHG) revealed a loss of 17p13.3, and the deletion was not present in either parent. This deletion has not previously been characterized, but mutations on the p-arm of chromosome 17 are responsible for Miller-Dieker Syndrome and Isolated Lissencephaly Sequence, both of which share symptoms in common with the patient.
Methods: Peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were used for karyotyping and competitive genetic hybridization (CHG). Bioinformatic analysis was carried out using the Genome Data Viewer (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genome/gdv).
Results: Karyotype was …
