Intelligence And Achievement Testing Of Convalescent Crippled Children, Loretta M. Miller Mar 1944

Intelligence And Achievement Testing Of Convalescent Crippled Children, Loretta M. Miller

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Psychological studies of crippled children have been few, but among published studies opinion is unanimous that crippled children test lower in intelligence than normal children. The study reported here arrives at the same conclusion. In that respect, it adds nothing new to the picture, but in an area in which findings are not entirely definitive, a study of convalescent crippled children may add confirmation to the general body of knowledge.

Adult Education In Post-War Australia, Colin Robert Badger Jan 1944

Adult Education In Post-War Australia, Colin Robert Badger

Future of Education

It cannot be denied that we will need more and more adult education in post-war Australia. There are many encouraging signs that the people of Australia are becoming aware of the deficiencies of their educational systems, and that reform and reconstruction, long overdue, will be bought about by the steady pressure of public opinion. There is a strong demand for a general raising of the school leaving age, for revised and better curricula, for better professional training for teachers, and for far more liberal provision of school buildings and equipment. And there is, fortunately, an increasingly strong demand for adult …

Education For Parenthood., Zoe Benjamin

The author then proceeds to offer advice to parents on assisting in the education of children at various age levels. This includes many topics, from how they spend their leisure time to making sure they meet their psychological needs.

From School To Work : A Plea For Vocational Guidance., W.M O'Neil Jan 1944

From School To Work : A Plea For Vocational Guidance., W.M O'Neil

Future of Education

Practically every young Australian leaving school goes to work and the choice of that work is a momentous decision for both the young person and his parents. [p.3]

Unfortunately, the business of choosing a career has become progressively more difficult. Three changes are mentioned to illustrate this. In the first place the increasing variety of modern occupations has created a larger field from which selection has to be made. In the second place, modern mechanized production has taken much of the skill of the old craftsman and put it into the machines. [p.5, ed]

In the third place, few occupations …

Education For Democracy, John Dudley Gibbs Medley

Future of Education

The authors general thesis is that if we are serious about the need of planning for better world after the war the first thing to start thinking about is education. This is done by developing two definitions of two familiar words and then stating four general propositions. The first word is democracy which the author defines as a system of society in which a large majority of the citizens are not only qualified in mind and body to play a significant part in the common business of community, but actually have opportunities to do so. Reform In The Primary School., J. M. Braithwaite, C. R. Mcrae, R. G. Staines

Future of Education

The pamphlet suggests reforms to primary school education as every Australian state there had been successive revisions of the course of study, all expressing a shift of emphasis away from monotonous grind and repetition, and towards such occupations as art, handwork, music, and physical education. But the movement towards better things was slow. [p. 5, ed]

We have seen that, during primary school years, the child grows in four main ways-physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. The function of the primary school is to ensure successful growth of all four kinds. It is a fair criticism of the average school that …

The War And The Public Schools, Emil E. Samuelson May 1942

The War And The Public Schools, Emil E. Samuelson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Now that the war is here, teachers and school administrators are being assailed by doubts and misgivings as to the importance of their day-by-day tasks. When a nation engages in war, it temporarily sets aside the more thoughtful and humane methods of improving human relationships and becomes absorbed in projecting a more immediate program for achieving an important national objective. Almost inevitably, public education in this country now faces stiff competition and struggle.

Rating Teachers To Help Them Grow, Emil E. Samuelson Jun 1941

Rating Teachers To Help Them Grow, Emil E. Samuelson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

In 1936 there was considerable dissatisfaction with the rating scale being used in the supervision of student teaching at the Central Washington College of Education, and it was felt that a new scale was needed. Consequently, three faculty members, the primary supervisor, the supervisor of rural teaching, and the director of personnel and placement decided to make a detailed study and to construct a new rating scale. The Ellensburg scale, originally evolved for the rating of student teachers with emphasis on guiding their growth, should be equally helpful in the rating and guidance of teachers in service.

The Evaluation Of Teachers And Teaching, Emil E. Samuelson May 1941

The Evaluation Of Teachers And Teaching, Emil E. Samuelson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The need for accurate evaluation of teachers and teaching is strongly indicated by various current situations. Among these is the oversupply of trained teachers and of candidates for admittance to teacher-training institutions. What candidates shall be selected for training? What teachers already trained shall be given preference in placement? And, finally, what criteria may be applied to determine professional advancement, Adequate evaluation of the type mentioned would help us to the answers of these questions.

Careers Of High School Basketball Players, Jewel D. Michael

In general, this study seeks to give some evidence on this question, through an examination of the subsequent careers or the boys who were basketball players in Frankfort High School during the years from 1919-1940.

Experimental Studies In Junior High School Monotonism, Lina Baldauf Knight Jan 1941

Experimental Studies In Junior High School Monotonism, Lina Baldauf Knight

Graduate Thesis Collection

The individual who lacks the use of his voice as a musical instrument lacks the natural, fundamental medium of musical expression. Not only does he lack the means for the closest and most direct relationship with music, but also there is a serious danger that, as a result, his whole range of musical appreciation will be impaired and finally obliterated. This is likely to occur because he does not have at his command and under his control this power which he so definitely needs. Children who are thus handicapped are often designated by the use of the word monotone.
