Csi Literacy: The Forensic Application Of Basic Skills Testing, Ralf St. Clair

This presentation is a reflection on the application of literacy testing in a criminal case in the UK. A woman of retirement age was charged with fraud on the basis of a repeated false statement on a benefit form. The author was asked by defense lawyers to provide an expert opinion on whether the defendant’s claim to have misunderstood the question due to limited literacy skills was credible. The presentation reviews the procedures developed by the author to come to an informed opinion, and discusses some of the limits of literacy testing the process revealed.

Developing Engaged Scholars: The Graduate Advisor-Advisee Relationship, Lorilee R. Sandmann, Audrey J. Jaeger, Jihyun Kim

A critical dimension in the development of emerging engaged scholars is the advisor-advisee relationship. A multiyear, multiuniversity study of doctoral students interested in community-engaged scholarship and their advisors found that advisors influenced their advisees’ specific approach to community engagement; advisees built extensively on their own community-based experiences and even pushed their advisors in co-learning about communityengaged scholarship; and advisors and advisees shared recognition of lack of support for community engagement but pursued it anyway.

Collaboration between adult educators and the media have played a significant role in adult education in Canada, leading to the creation of innovative programs in the past. Today, many stories of community struggles and victories do not make the news. Community-based documentary film festivals offer an alternative source of information and provide a community/ solidarity building event that contributes to rebuilding a meaningful public space.

This study applied philosophical concept analysis as a qualitative research method to study meanings of the concept “criticality” in adult education. The research design combined elements of two previously applied approaches emphasizing comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the literature. Results of this study provide a clear conceptual foundation and working definition for the concept “criticality” that will serve as a heuristic for further research, theory building, and practice.

Researchers have recognized several factors that are formidable forces preventing African Americans and other minorities to achieve their fullest potentials in organizations (Thomas, 1989; Hackett & Byers 1996). Studies have revealed that African American women are more disadvantaged than African American men in the career development process (Cox & Blake 1991; Cox, 1993; Palmer, 2001). Transformative Learning Intervention: Effect On Functional Health Literacy And Diabetes Knowledge In Older African Americans, Daphne W. Ntiri, Merry Stewart

This study evaluated the effect of a transformative learning intervention on functional health literacy and diabetes knowledge in older African Americans. Twenty participants from senior community centers completed a six session intervention and three health literacy tests. Participants’ verbal responses affirmed the positive influence of the TL principles.

This paper introduces a model of arts-based research using performance to center a sub-altern perspective utilizing a feminist process of data analysis and representation. Stories are collected from narrative interviews and then analyzed and expressed as performance text in the communities where they originated. Research becomes accessible beyond the academy while purposely centering previously marginalized voices.

In the coming years, the community college will experience unprecedented turnover in its leadership, especially among its senior ranks (Shults, 2001; Weisman & Vaughan, 2001; 2006). Weisman & Vaughan (2006) note that 84 percent of community college Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) plan to retire by 2016. This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does affect how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must engage in discussions on “Critical Information Literacy” where information is tied to knowledge creation that does not limit learners to a specific cultural worldview. Information and information-seeking processes cannot be separated from knowledge production.

Enhancing Language Skills And Fostering Perspective Transformation In Adult Esl Education: A Transformative Learning Approach, Bruce Manson, Eric Poitras, Yuan-Jin Hong

The objectives of this action research are to examine how a transformative learning approach in a university-level ESL setting improved the English language skills of two classes of 32 learners, and how this approach influenced their perspectives on a number of issues. Findings indicate that many learners experience significant gains in their English language abilities, increased self-confidence in English, and perspective shifts regarding the language learning process, other cultures, and a number of social issues.

This study explores the significance of race from a social constructionist perspective. Examples of legal cases set the stage for current definitions of whiteness and racial identification. A community-based transformational organizing model is explained by describing the challenges and educational strategies used by an immigrant rights organization. Reciprocity and mutuality are fundamental values and inherent goals of community-engaged partnerships. However, achieving reciprocal relationships demands an understanding of forms of power and differentials in power.
