Engaging Students In Art Beyond The K-12 School Environment, Melanie Ducharme Jan 2014

Engaging Students In Art Beyond The K-12 School Environment, Melanie Ducharme

Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview

This purpose of this thesis is to investigate a unit of instruction for a mural project with a community organization.

The question I sought to answer through this research was: How can I design a unit of instruction in collaboration with a local organization that will potentially engage students in a community-based work of art while also promoting a sense of community among the students?

Though this thesis research, I learned to collaborate with an organization to create a hypothetical unit of instruction. Also, I wanted to discover how I can create a learning experience that is engaging and personally …

Issues And Challenges In The Delivery Of Secondary School Music Education In Ireland : A Regional Case Study, Marita Murray Jan 2014

Issues And Challenges In The Delivery Of Secondary School Music Education In Ireland : A Regional Case Study, Marita Murray

Theses

Research in effective music experiences during childhood and teenage years has shown the potential for significant developmental effects. However, the number of students studying music as a subject in secondary school in Ireland is statistically low in comparison with other areas of schooling. International literature points to a number of key issues and significant challenges in the delivery of music as a subject, yet there has been little Irish research carried out in this area. This study aims to examine the delivery of school music education in a sample of Irish post-primary schools. It is a case study in delivery …

Exploring A "Mor-In-Touch" Approach To Art Teaching, Micaela E. Morin Jan 2014

Exploring A "Mor-In-Touch" Approach To Art Teaching, Micaela E. Morin

Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview

How can students be more in touch with their artistic process through materials, decisions, social interactions, and environment when creating a work of art about identity for a collaborative mosaic relief installation?

This thesis explored an opportunity for my students to work together to create a collaborative art installation in our high school. This was important to do because the school had just been recently renovated and the new environment felt devoid of any art or personality that once reflected its former students. The important factors behind the installation design were to bring the visual dialogue of community into the …

Mission Statement Clarity And Organizational Behavior At An Art-Focused High School, Michael Allen Mitchell Jan 2014

Mission Statement Clarity And Organizational Behavior At An Art-Focused High School, Michael Allen Mitchell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many new institutions struggle with issues of identity and purpose, which can create instability and lack of growth. Mission statements are often used to clearly identify the characteristics that make an organization unique. This study was informed by theories of organizational management, art integration constructivism, and Bronfenbrenner's cultural ecology. The literature indicates that there is a strong connection between a clear and concise mission statement and the organization's behaviors. This study examined a small Southeast Michigan charter school devoted to integrating arts and academic curricula to determine how the stated mission was understood and implemented by its stakeholders. An applied, …

Collaborative And Creative Thinking Skill Development Through The Design Of Wearable Technologies, Laurie E. Korte Jan 2014

Collaborative And Creative Thinking Skill Development Through The Design Of Wearable Technologies, Laurie E. Korte

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Skills inherent in the creative thinking process such as reflecting and collaborating are needed for success in many careers. However, a focus on standardized testing in K-12 schools in the United States has resulted in the restructuring, reduction, and in some cases, elimination of arts in the curriculum to the detriment of students' creative thinking process. The purpose of this study was to discover whether creative thinking and collaborative skills were positive unintended consequences of a curriculum that includes the design of wearable technologies. Jonassen's modeling using Mindtools for conceptual change and Rosen's culture of collaboration provided the conceptual framework. …

Food Landscapes: A Case Study Of A Cooking And Art- Focused Program For Teens Living In A Food Desert, Jessica R. Norris

Theses and Dissertations

This study constructs themes and propositions about the experiences of youth participants in the fall 2013 Food Landscapes program at the Neighborhood Resource Center in Richmond, Virginia. During the program, youth participated in cooking-based volunteerism with adults with disabilities and created short videos about their experiences. In this study, I analyzed pre- and post-program participant interviews, twice-weekly program observations, and facilitator reflections to understand how Food Landscapes affected youths’ conception of community engagement and communication strategies. This case study offers insight into how youth experience after-school programming of this design. Based on my findings, youth develop and rely upon a …
