A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Two Approaches To Teaching Reading Comprehension On Achievement Of Fourth And Fifth Grade Students Of Middle And Low Socioeconomic Status, Alfred John Gordon
A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Two Approaches To Teaching Reading Comprehension On Achievement Of Fourth And Fifth Grade Students Of Middle And Low Socioeconomic Status, Alfred John Gordon
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Problem: The problem was divided into two parts. The first part investigated the question whether students who were taught reading comprehension skills by the PIRAMID objective-based approach showed a greater gain than students who were taught the same skills by use of the basal reader approach. The second part was to ascertain the degree of concordance between results of the criterion-referenced test (CRT) and results of the norm-referenced test (NRT).
Purpose: The purpose was twofold: (1) to compare gains in reading comprehension achievement of an experimental group with gains of a control group, and (2) to compare the pretest and …

The Decline Of History, Rowan Cahill
The Decline Of History, Rowan Cahill
Rowan Cahill
Written at a time when the teaching of 'History' was declining in Australian secondary schools (1970s), this is a view from the classroom by a classroom teacher. The author trenchantly defends the place of 'History' as a subject in Secondary schools, and opposes its teaching by non-history trained teachers, as well as the introduction of 'thematic' approaches. Instead he defends a broad 'History' curriculum, the exploration of cause and effect, and for Senior students, their introduction to the notion of 'historiography'.

Moora: Aboriginal Children In A Wheatbelt Town, Lois Tilbrook
Research outputs pre 2011
Moora town was established in 1875, when the railway from Midland Junction to Walkaway was built. There had always been Aborigines in the surrounding districts, and as land was taken up for farming, a number of them were employed as farmhands and domestics.
The town is the regional centre for the North Midlands, a subdivision of the Northern Agricultural Statistical Division of Western Australia. As such, it was developed to service the agricultural hinterland. The Northern Agricultural Statistical Division has a total population of 42,804 people (23,044 males and 19,766 females) of whom 1,828 or 4.6% are Aboriginal (1,003 males …

The author addresses the contemporary (1970s) loss of confidence, and interest, in history as a subject amongst Australian secondary school students and educational administrators. He mounts a defence of the teaching of the subject in schools, and argues for its complexities. Strategies to increase the appeal of the subject and its perceived relevance are suggested.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It was the purpose of this study to investigate the premise that if a reading program is based on individual interest, those individuals participating in the program will be motivated to read and will make greater gains in vocabulary skills, comprehension skills, and total reading skills than those taught by a non-individualized approach. The research undertaken fer this study utilized thirty-nine, Black, seventh grade students who were underachieving in reading. These subjects were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and two control groups.
The analysis of covariance procedures were used to measure gains in vocabulary achievement, comprehension achievement, and total …

Tutorial Reading Programs In The Elementary School: A Survey, Judith P. Mitchell
Tutorial Reading Programs In The Elementary School: A Survey, Judith P. Mitchell
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In this complex and often confusing country, reading is viewed by many people as the most important skill a child can acquire during his school years. Success in school, of both children and teachers, particularly in the elementary grades, is often measured by children's success in learning how to read. Reading is the tool that unlocks most knowledge for children and adults alike. As a person seeks employment the inability to read or the inability to read with facility greatly limits the opportunities.

The Effects Of The Program Improving Classroom Instruction Through Self-Analysis" (Parsons, 1975) On The Characteristics Of Verbal Interaction In Classroom Settings, Robert Whitman Smith
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The ICI system consists of materials which guide the teacher in analyzing his own teaching behavior, so that he can gain an objective understanding of his strengths and weaknesses. With the system the only observer is the teacher himself; it is he who will view and analyze the tapes. The classroom thus becomes the learning place for the teacher, as well as for his pupils.
The problem of dealing with the actual process of teaching is quite different from the construction and testing of curriculum content. In this case the focus is on the strategy of presentation, rather than the …

Theses and Dissertations
The problems with which this study will deal are based upon three premises:
1. There is a tremendous need in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for qualified, spiritually-motivating teachers.
2. The Book of Mormon has a record of many outstanding teachers and examples of teaching.
3. Teachers in the Church today can improve their effectiveness by learning from the teachers and the instructional process as found in the Book of Mormon.

A Multi-Sensory Approach To Teaching Spelling To Learning Disabled Children, Judith M. Meuleman
Master's Theses
Problem
Learning disabled children are receiving increasing attention, for despite an intelligence quotient within the normal range, they are not achieving in school as well as their peers. The reasons offered for this phenomenon seem to relate to perceptual problems. Specific learning disabilities occur in reading, arithmetic, spelling, handwriting and other motor coordination areas. This study investigates the effect of a multi-sensory method of teaching spelling to learning disabled children using sandpaper letters to utilize the tactile and kinesthetic sensory modalities.
Method
Unfamiliar spelling words were taught to 40 learning disabled children, 38 boys and 2 girls. The children were …

An Investigation Of Subject Matter Other Than Shorthand And Typewriting Emphasized In The Teaching Of Transcription Activities At The Utah Secondary Level, Susan Mcarthur
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Transcription is the ultimate goal of shorthand, according to Karaim, and mailable copy and rapid production are the primary aims of transcription. The ability to transcribe shorthand notes into usable printed form should be acquired before a stenographer has a marketable shorthand skill. Driska writes that "no matter how skillful the shorthand student may be in recording dictation, she is not properly fitted for work in an office unless she can transcribe her notes quickly and accurately."
Jester Writes that businessmen want transcripts which are correct in details of English mechanics, as well as being accurate transcripts of dictation. A …
