Reading For Deep Understanding : Knowledge Building And Conceptual Artifacts In Secondary English, Marc Nachowitz
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this design-based experiment is two-fold: to see if classroom pedagogies can be developed to improve student achievement in English literature as well as prepare them for 21st Century literacies. Applying Bereiter and Scardamalia's theory of Knowledge Building to English curricula, this experiment tracked the progress of a sixth grade Language Arts class as they engaged in creating theories of literary interpretation supported by Knowledge Forum, a computer-supported, on-line learning environment. The study revealed several key findings concerning how knowledge-building can support student's attainment of "high literacy" in the reading of literature, including maintaining idea diversity, the importance …

Down The Rabbit Hole: A Look At Integrating Classic Literature Into A Secondary Mathematics Curriculum, Adam E. Sokol
Adam E Sokol
The importance of mathematics and reading is paramount to the advancement of civilization. Research has shown that mathematics and reading, along with writing, have a strong correlation. The new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics stress the importance of applying mathematical concepts to other subjects and real life. Interestingly, the mathematics and English curriculums have some objectives in common. Classic literature provides a unique context for mathematical concepts to be applied. Using classic literature to teach mathematics could allow students to engage in mathematics and literature more deeply. Example lessons and worksheets supported by research allow teachers to another …

The Effect Of Teacher Retention On Student Achievement In Third Grade Reading/Language Arts, Kathy Bang Sellers
Dissertations
The United States government has placed emphasis on the placement of highly qualified teachers within each classroom through the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This becomes more difficult when teachers become frustrated for various reasons and leave the profession of teaching before gaining the necessary experience to positively impact student achievement.
The purpose of the study was to examine the possible relationship between teacher retention, teachers staying within the teaching profession, and the effect it has on student achievement. The study is based on individual teachers' class summary reports from the 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010 …

In Australia and other Western countries, there is growing recognition among governments, business and community groups that schools cannot deal with the complex demands of the twenty-first century on their own. There is an emerging body of evidence to show that school-community partnerships can make a positive difference to the outcomes of students in disadvantaged areas. There are still gaps in the evidence base however. More evidence of successful collaboration is needed and the impact these partnerships have on student outcomes. The WLinCS project is one such example of a highly effective school-community partnership. The western suburbs of Melbourne are …
