Community, Home, And School Partnerships: A Critical Issue In Bilingual Education, Claudia Peralta

How can we help educators realize the wealth and relevancy that culturally and linguistically diverse families and students bring into the schools? Preparing teachers to effectively teach across socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and gender differences is complicated by a lack of familiarity with or valuing of the cultures, learning styles, and communication patterns of diverse groups (Bohn & Sleeter, 2000). Today, however, 84% of teachers are white (Feistritzer, 2011), despite serving 74 million children in the United States (defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as those under 18 years of age), of which 59% are White; 19% Hispanic, 15%; Black, 4%; …

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the reconfiguration of three schools, on parent trust, as measured by parent perceptions in a small urban school district in New Jersey.
For this study an interview protocol was developed to elicit parent responses about the reconfigured schools’ ability to meet the middle school needs of their children and it’s impact on one component of the parent school relationship; trust.
The reader is provided with direct quotations from the interview participants which consisted of parents with mixed socio-economic and racial backgrounds from the reconfigured schools whose children attend or …
Defining, Operationalizing, Developing, And Assessing Candidate Dispositions In Teacher Education, Alan John Zenkert Jr.
Defining, Operationalizing, Developing, And Assessing Candidate Dispositions In Teacher Education, Alan John Zenkert Jr.
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This inquiry seeks to identify the beliefs of college students prior to their entry into a teacher education program (pre-program students), teacher educators, practicing P-12 teachers, and practicing P-12 administrators (teacher education professionals) related to the construct “dispositions” in teacher education. Grounded in a social constructivist understanding of teaching and learning, this primarily phenomenological study utilizes the analysis of survey data to uncover and explore multiple perspectives on beliefs about dispositions in teacher education in an effort to identify implications for teacher education research and practice.
Findings suggest that pre-program students and teacher education professionals believe that dispositions are an …

Why Are Secondary School Girls Not Embracing Science?, Felicia F. Ibrahim
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis examines some of the factors that impact upon secondary school girls and the subsequent decisions that they make, whether to continue their study of science, once it becomes an elective area of study. Specifically, the girls were asked about their previous experiences in science classes, their perceptions and beliefs about science teachers, and the girls’ attainment or lack of success in science and perceptions about self-efficacy.
For the first component all female students in their grade twelve year were asked to fill out a questionnaire, to determine general perceptions about science learning, based on opinions and personal experiences …
A Study Of The Articulated Leadership Practices Of Principals In Relation To The Literature On The Characteristics Of High Performing Principals, Janet Grooms
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
2013
In the modern world of education and 21st century school systems, improvements in student achievements are recognized as the foremost objective of school reforms and restructuring efforts. The criticism continues to spread across the country for public schools that fail to meet students’ needs, especially in the urban areas where the achievement gap is widening. School communities and educational leaders continue to demand more accountability from principals as instructional leaders because of the decline in student achievement, as measured by states’ standardized achievement tests. The trend in most school systems is that the school principal is required by the …

Students With Blindness Explore Chemistry At ‘Camp Can Do’, Cary A. Supalo, H. David Wohlers, Jennifer R. Humphrey
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
Students with blindness or low vision are often discouraged from full participation in laboratory science classes due to the inadequacy of current methodological approaches and the lack of sophisticated adaptive technologies. Consequently, these students rarely go on to pursue advanced studies and employment in the sciences. In response to his own frustrations as a scientist with blindness, Supalo conceived, co-founded, and managed the Independent Laboratory Access for the Blind (ILAB) project for his doctoral research in chemistry. Numerous multisensory tools, technologies, and methodologies for teaching the sciences to students with visual impairments were developed and evaluated by the ILAB team. …

A Program Like Any Other…Like None Other: Sustaining A Laboratory Science Technology Program For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students, Todd Pagano, Annemarie D. Ross
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
A goal of the Laboratory Science Technology program at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a college of Rochester Institute of Technology, is to produce graduates with strong foundations in applied science, hands-on laboratory applications, and “soft skills” necessary for competitive employment as laboratory technicians. Graduates of the program earn Associate degrees, and if qualified, transition to related baccalaureate programs. Those who finish either an Associates of Occupational Science or Associates of Applied Science degree programs tend to go to work in the chemical, biological, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, environmental, forensic, industrial, and food analysis fields. At first glance, the LST …

Using An Inquiry-Based Teaching Approach To Improve Science Outcomes For Students With Disabilities: Snapshot And Longitudinal Data, Jonte Taylor, William J. Therrien, Erica Rochelle Kaldenberg, Sarah J. Watt, Niphon Chanlen, Brian Hand
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
Poor science achievement has been an educational issue for a number of years. Students with disabilities have traditionally fared worse. Research suggests that students with disabilities may respond better to instruction using an inquiry-based approach vs. traditional textbook instruction when measuring science achievement on standardized measures. The researchers report achievement data on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills from a target school district for students Individualized Education Program’s (IEP) and non-IEP students, as well as students with IEP’s at the state level. Using an argument-based inquiry approach to science instruction called the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH); the researchers report data …
Ambiguity And Inconsistencies In Mathematics Spoken In The Classroom: The Need For Teacher Training And Rules For Communication Of Mathematics, M.D. Isaacson, S. Srinivasan, Lyle Lloyd
Ambiguity And Inconsistencies In Mathematics Spoken In The Classroom: The Need For Teacher Training And Rules For Communication Of Mathematics, M.D. Isaacson, S. Srinivasan, Lyle Lloyd
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
Mathematics has the potential for being spoken ambiguously. This is problematic for many students, in particular those who have disabilities that inhibit processing of printed material. This paper documents the magnitude of potential ambiguity arising from textbooks and provides a measure of the degree to which potential ambiguity is actualized through teachers’ speech. Inconsistency among teachers in speaking mathematics is also documented. Evidence is provided that teachers are not adequately aware of ambiguity in speaking mathematics and that they believe that they should have training regarding ambiguity in communication of mathematics and how to speak mathematics non-ambiguously.

Operating A Very Large-Section, Hybrid Principles Of Marketing Class At A Public University: Lessons Learned Over Ten Years, Bruce Robertson, Kevin Kelly
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This case study describes the development and operation of a very large-section, hybrid Principles of Marketing Class. The authors describe the original structure of the class, major adaptations and decisions related to its development over time, and discuss four lessons learned through this process: (1) The non-traditional format needs a lot of explaining, (2) This will always be an experimental class, (3) Plan in advance and have contingency plans, (4) It is easier to share the work than it is to share the budget. They conclude by suggesting Principles of Marketing is a logical entry point for innovative technology.

Exploring Consumer Behavior Using Student Constructed Photographic Essays And Film Projects, Seth Ellis
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Millennials can be characterized by a preference for classroom discussion rather than lecture, working in small collaborative groups, and a desire for structure and steady feedback. This paper describes an undergraduate course, Visual Methods for Exploring Consumer Behavior, where students examine topics in consumer behavior by constructing photographic essays and films as primary research vehicles. We discuss how the course is operationalized, how to encourage and support students in their endeavors, and how to avoid some of the pitfalls we have encountered.

Engaging Students Through A Virtual Live Case, John M. Zych
Engaging Students Through A Virtual Live Case, John M. Zych
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Students are motivated to engage in their education when they understand how mastery of course content will translate to practical skills needed in the job market. In marketing education, live cases often are used to help students make a clear connection between course content and its application to real-world business problems. There are times, however, when a live case is not feasible or available. For these circumstances, the author has developed an innovative approach which approximates a live case. The approach combines components of a live case with historical analysis to have students perform an in-depth market strategy analysis of …

The Collaborative Classroom: New Technology Brings New Paradigm, Ben Clapp, James Swenson
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Today, technology is the agent of change that is revolutionizing education. The collaborative classroom, where teachers and students openly gather and share information to empower one another for the purpose of learning, is quickly replacing the existing reality of the traditional classroom where teachers lecture and provide their expertise.
Collaboration is a tool used in classrooms not only to engage students but also to bring them together and teach them how to work together. Peer review is an important collaborative technique that allows students to share their work and ideas for the purposes of improvement and shared learning. With the …

Quality Of Student Effort: Improving Through Achievement Mastery And Psychological Needs, Michael W. Pass
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Instructors shaping the classroom experience with a variety of innovative teaching methods may improve the quality of student effort. This study facilitates effective innovation by developing and testing a model that shows how the quality of student effort is influenced by an achievement mastery goal orientation in tandem with the student’s fulfillment of three psychological needs. Findings reveal the influence of these factors, thus highlighting their importance and suggesting that instructors give attention to each one of them when deciding to take steps to increase student effort. Achievement Goal Theory and Self-Determination Theory are drawn upon to advance hypotheses that …
Using Technology To Teach Pricing Concepts, Kathy Winsted, Judy Graham
Using Technology To Teach Pricing Concepts, Kathy Winsted, Judy Graham
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This paper identifies a useful technology tool that aids in the teaching of pricing strategies and allows students to experience the interactive effects of decisions involving pricing, production levels, and promotional spend. This innovative technology tool can be easily implemented either online or in the classroom. Concepts related to pricing strategy do not typically evoke enthusiasm from students, and in many cases, both students and professors would welcome an engaging, innovative way to teach the key concepts of pricing strategy. In the past, attempts to convey pricing concepts through experiential learning have involved large-scale simulations that extend throughout the length …

Bullying Prevention In Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports: A Review Of The Literature, Allen Garcia, Regina M. Oliver
Bullying Prevention In Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports: A Review Of The Literature, Allen Garcia, Regina M. Oliver
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
The literature has suggested that problem behavior in the schools is an ongoing problem (Sugai et. al., 2000). This is a major concern for schools that want to provide a safe learning environment that promotes positive behaviors and academic learning. Such problem requires a systematic response, thus, School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) was created to target and prevent problem behaviors. Another form of problem behaviors in schools is bullying, and within the framework of SW-PBIS, there is limited research on targeting bullying. The current review examines and evaluates current research of SW-PBIS, and it’s application to bullying. Searches …

Re-Storing The Earth: A Phenomenological Study Of Living Sustainably, Jessica B. Buckley
Re-Storing The Earth: A Phenomenological Study Of Living Sustainably, Jessica B. Buckley
Faculty Scholarship
Living sustainably evokes ideas of lived, bodily engagement with and perception of the earth. Yet, modern ways of thinking and speaking have slowly alienated the earth from consciousness. Using phenomenological methods, the author examines the experience of living sustainably, exploring her own background and the idea of restoring the earth to consciousness, before examining the lives of two students dedicated to living sustainably. Components of upholding the earth, in-volving humanity, perceiving differences in studying and embodying sustainability, and engaging in choices fill the experience of living sustainably.

Change is a fundamental feature of life and living; without it, few things would survive, and fewer, if any, would thrive. The New England Journal of Public Policy has undergone a change, having elected to assume an electronic form. Since coming into being in this form three months ago, the success it has realized with its earlier issues has been remarkable. It is as if it were being waited on. In the month of December 2012, for example, the journal was the second most popular publication series on ScholarWorks at the University of Massachusetts Boston, with a total of 2,783 …
