The presenters of this pre-conference will elaborate on the current state of e-book platforms in academic libraries from a holistic, experiential perspective and present important research findings discovered while preparing for this pre-conference and a future issue of Against The Grain. The topics covered will include an overview of e-book platforms including technical aspects and business models, lending platforms, aggregator platforms, publisher-specific platforms, and university press platforms. At the end of the session we will reconvene into smaller breakout groups which will enable participants to meet with the presenters individually to pose specific questions. Remote Cart And Vri: What We Learned On The Road To Success, Dean Brusnighan, David Schwarte
Teaching and Learning Technologies Presentations
Has your institution tried remote Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) or Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) without success? Ours has too. Initially, we had little success with remote CART and VRI on our campus. In this session, remote CART and VRI will be described, and our problem-solving approach will be explained. The challenges in using these services on a large campus are identified. We will describe a hardware change that started us on the road to success. We purchased a quality wireless microphone to use in these tests. We will identify the microphone and share the outstanding feedback received about the …
Behavioral Contracting For K-12 Students, Emily Blythe, Amanda Dennison
Behavioral Contracting For K-12 Students, Emily Blythe, Amanda Dennison
Applied Behavior Analysis (SPED 432) and Intervention Strategies for Literacy (SPED 431)
This poster provides examples to implement behavior contracting strategies in K-12 classrooms. These behavior contracting strategies will facilitate improved student behavior. Behavioral contracting refers to a written contract that describes a child’s behavioral obligations. In addition, reinforcers (teachers’ or parents’ obligations) are outlined for when the child has met the contract’s conditions. In research conducted by Cutrell (2010) middle-school students with emotional behavior disorders (EBD) were examined. The research demonstrated that behavioral contracts decreased the participants’ targeted, inappropriate behavior. The following details are outlined: For whom and why behavioral contracts are used; how to implement behavioral contracting in the classroom; …
Outreach To Science Faculty And Students Through Research Exhibitions, Tina Chan, Chris Hebblethwaite
Outreach To Science Faculty And Students Through Research Exhibitions, Tina Chan, Chris Hebblethwaite
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Presentation describes bringing a display of student scholarship to Penfield Library at SUNY Oswego. Two science librarians approached faculty members regarding potential participation and then organized a showcase of science research inside the library. Having research posters displayed in a visible, central, and active location allows the broader campus community to view the latest research from students and faculty. Reaching out to science faculty reminds them that librarians can help with their library needs, and that the library is a place to highlight their and their students’ research.

Using Learning Objects To Enhance Distance Or Blended Learning, Susan A. Ariew, Maryellen Allen
Using Learning Objects To Enhance Distance Or Blended Learning, Susan A. Ariew, Maryellen Allen
Susan A. Ariew
The USF Tampa Library has been creating learning objects to enhance instruction and reference since YouTube came into its own in 2006. Over that period of time, the need for more expertise in creating quality learning objects that can be embedded in course management systems or on the library web site created a shift in priorities and leadership. In 2012 the USF Library hired an Assistant Director for Instruction and a Blended Librarian to provide a new direction for the instruction program, one that would include more online learning components. Both of these experts have helped transform teaching and learning …

Improving Reading Compliance And Quiz Scores Through The Use Of Reading Guides, Judith Longfield, Trent W. Maurer
Improving Reading Compliance And Quiz Scores Through The Use Of Reading Guides, Judith Longfield, Trent W. Maurer
Centers for Teaching Excellence Staff Presentations
Questions & Rationale: This session will present an inquiry into student learning as measured by reading compliance and quiz scores. Students’ reading compliance has declined substantially over the past 30 years from over 80% to less than 20% (Burchfield & Sappington, 2000). Even in textbook-reliant introductory courses, students read less than 1/3 of the assigned pages (Gurung & Martin, 2011), and reading compliance significantly predicts exam scores and final grades (Sappington et al., 2002). Students who have not completed the readings are unprepared for class activities based on that material, which makes it difficult for instructors to move beyond content-delivery …

Steps To Support Student Engagement In An Online Course With Large Enrollments, Paula Jones
Instructional Development Center Faculty and Staff Research
In online courses with large enrollments, it may be difficult to support students in becoming engaged communications or projects simply because of the sheer number of students involved in the course. In this session, we will look at a summary list of steps to follow that is intended to help faculty developers to plan ways to support student engagement in an online course, specifically related to courses with large enrollments. We will then have an open discussion of methods others use in their courses to support student engagement. Finally, we will explore some specific free or low cost resources used …

Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold
Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold
Anna K. Gold
The university library can be reconceptualized as a powerful engine for open culture. A generative and regenerative center that naturally brings disciplines, cultures, and generations together, the university library can expand its role in open culture far beyond sharing institutionally-produced research and data through open repositories. Drawing on the experience of a public polytechnic university, this presentation documents the emergence of a university library as a system of open culture programs and as a place where a speeding culture can stop to dialogue, think, and create: generating collective interactive learning; fostering collaboration with open data; cultivating open conversations and learning …

Massillon City Schools and Ashland University assessed a project designed to strengthen the curriculum and improve student learning potential. Results suggest that assessing student learning potential can predict standardized testing outcomes (i.e., ACT/SAT scores) and college success (Entrance/Graduation). Incorporated are suggestions for implementing a standards-based curriculum and how-to predicting student outcomes using the Student Success Survey. Keynote Speaker - Simulation, Stimulation And Silence: Learning Online And Off, Norman Friesen
Norman Friesen
Almost 20 years after the popular adoption of the Internet, we are still finding out about the nature of online places and spaces. Whether these locations are used for interpersonal communication or naturalistic simulation, they offer characteristics which may be ideally suited to some types of pedagogical activities and less appropriate for others. This often depends on a deeper understanding of the nature of these activities and experiences. In this presentation Norm Friesen of Boise State University will undertake a careful examination of a couple of practical examples. He will use these examples explore the nature of both pedagogy and …

The Challenges Of Faculty-Led Study Abroad In Cuba, Amy S. Orf
Faculty Works
Recent changes in U.S. travel regulations now allow for short-term study abroad in Cuba. However, planning and leading Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba present certain challenges not encountered in other programs. In this presentation I discuss current U.S. regulations regarding educational travel to Cuba, as well as the particular challenges that I faced in leading two successful Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba, including recruiting, budget and finances, travel arrangements, on-site logistics, and safety.

Active Learning In The Library: Stewarding Funds And Cutting Cables, Ryan Ingersoll
SPU Works
I share about my experience converting a traditional computer lab in the library to an active learning space. During summer 2012, the Seattle Pacific University Library staff proposed, planned, and implemented the conversion of a traditional lab space with 22 desktop computers into an active learning classroom. We equipped the room with mobile furniture, a wireless interactive, short-throw projector with digital pens, a new MacBook Pro checkout system, and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Partnering with librarians, Facilities, and Instructional Technology Services, the project came together just before the new academic school year.
