Preparing Teachers To Apply Research To Mathematics Teaching: Using Design-Based Research To Define And Assess The Process Of Evidence-Based Practice, Sarah Van Ingen Jan 2013

Preparing Teachers To Apply Research To Mathematics Teaching: Using Design-Based Research To Define And Assess The Process Of Evidence-Based Practice, Sarah Van Ingen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Persistent lack of mathematics achievement and disparity in achievement has led to the publication of research findings related to equitable teaching practices. Although the publication of such research provides insights about approaches for potentially increasing equity in mathematics education, teachers must be able to apply what has been learned from these studies to their classroom teaching practices. Despite the widespread expectation that teachers use research-supported teaching strategies to meet the needs of their diverse classrooms, the research to practice gap persists. Little research is currently available to guide mathematics teacher educators in how to prepare future teachers to apply research …

Science Informational Trade Books: An Exploration Of Text-Based Practices And Interactions In A First-Grade Classroom, Virginia Anne Schreier Jan 2013

Science Informational Trade Books: An Exploration Of Text-Based Practices And Interactions In A First-Grade Classroom, Virginia Anne Schreier

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although scholars have long advocated the use of informational texts in the primary grades, gaps and inconsistencies in research have produced conflicting reports on how teachers used these texts in the primary curriculum, and how primary students dealt with them during instruction and on their own (e.g., Saul & Dieckman, 2005). Thus, to add to research on informational texts in the primary grades, the purpose of this study was to examine: (a) a first-grade teacher's use of science informational trade books (SITBs) in her classroom, (b) the ways students responded to her instruction, and (c) how students interacted with these …

The Relationship Of Undergraduate First-Time-In-College Students' Expectations Of Interactions With Faculty And Four-Year College Degree Completion, Craig N. Story Jan 2013

The Relationship Of Undergraduate First-Time-In-College Students' Expectations Of Interactions With Faculty And Four-Year College Degree Completion, Craig N. Story

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Faculty are the academic heart of colleges and universities. They guide learning and facilitate student academic and social integration in the campus community. As described by Tinto, student integration is an important component to success in college. Out-of-class and in-class faculty-student interaction supports student integration and may lead to improved college completion. Students enter college with expectations for what they are about to experience, including expectations for faculty interaction. Smart adapted Holland's vocational choice theory to study college disciplines and found that faculty in six broad categories of disciplines displayed specific environmental and personality traits and interacted differently with students. …

Blending Worlds, Reforming Practice?: An Instrumental Case Study Of Collaborative Early Childhood Teacher Education, Ann Marie Mickelson Jan 2013

Blending Worlds, Reforming Practice?: An Instrumental Case Study Of Collaborative Early Childhood Teacher Education, Ann Marie Mickelson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Collaborative models of teacher education have grown from the belief that through such models we can improve the quality and availability of truly inclusive opportunities for children with diverse abilities and their families. Little is known however as to the extent collaborative models are capable of influencing inclusive service delivery or in terms of their efficacy to impact the relative inclusive practice of their graduates as compared to other models of teacher education. As an important first step toward examining the relative worth and efficacy of collaborative models of early childhood teacher education, this case study applied a conceptual framework …

Effects Of Response Cards On The Disruptive Behavior Of Students, Leslie S. Singer Jan 2013

Effects Of Response Cards On The Disruptive Behavior Of Students, Leslie S. Singer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

This study examined the effects of response cards (RC) on student disruptive behavior, responding, and accuracy of responding during whole-class guided-reading instruction in a first-grade classroom. The authors combined two baseline conditions with an alternating treatments design and then replicated the effects across four teacher-nominated students. The first baseline condition was the teacher's typical instruction format, where one student who raised his/her hand was called upon to respond to the teacher's question. The second baseline condition (BL') was the same as the first baseline with an additional control for the number of teacher-delivered questions to the class per session. …

Navigation And Immersion Of The American Identity In A Foreign Culture To Emergence As A Culturally Relative Ambassador, Lee H. Rosen Jan 2013

Navigation And Immersion Of The American Identity In A Foreign Culture To Emergence As A Culturally Relative Ambassador, Lee H. Rosen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Globalization is forcing many American college students to re-evaluate their perspective on foreign travel. If they are offered an opportunity to improve their cultural relativity skill set by immersing themselves into a new culture, the more astute students might choose to embark on that journey especially if it would result in resume enhancement. This paper focuses upon a group of twelve community college students' cross-cultural experiences, navigation techniques, and adaptation methods as student interns teaching conversational English in Changchun, China for a period of nine to thirteen weeks in spring 2011. Several areas of interest emerged from their experiences …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of An Authentic Science Experience Among Urban High School Students, Angela Chapman Jan 2013

An Investigation Of The Effects Of An Authentic Science Experience Among Urban High School Students, Angela Chapman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Providing equitable learning opportunities for all students has been a persistent issue for some time. This is evident by the science achievement gap that still exists between male and female students as well as between White and many non-White student populations (NCES, 2007, 2009, 2009b) and an underrepresentation of female, African-American, Hispanic, and Native Americans in many science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related careers (NCES, 2009b). In addition to gender and ethnicity, socioeconomic status and linguistic differences are also factors that can marginalize students in the science classroom. One factor attributed to the achievement gap and low participation …

How Does A Principal Use Intention And Strategy In The Enactment Of Advocacy Leadership, Lisa Marie Grant Jan 2013

How Does A Principal Use Intention And Strategy In The Enactment Of Advocacy Leadership, Lisa Marie Grant

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

District and school leadership are essential to the success of our students and our schools. While extensive conceptual literature describes leadership characteristics, there are few empirical studies that address the daily reality of schools. In addition, additional research is needed describing how principals maneuver within the context of schools and school districts. This phenomenological study explored how one elementary school principal understands and enacts leadership and to what extent she employs intentional strategies to facilitate change. The purpose of the study was to offer a rich profile of one elementary school principal's practice to understand how a principal constructs meaning, …

Public Acts Of Self-Deliberation: Preparation For Discursive Democracy In Education, Vonzell Agosto Jan 2013

Public Acts Of Self-Deliberation: Preparation For Discursive Democracy In Education, Vonzell Agosto

Educational and Psychological Studies Faculty Publications

This conceptual essay forwards self-deliberation as an act to be included in the preparation of educators and administrators. Self-deliberation is defined as a public act of deliberation that can be instigated pedagogically to prepare students for difficult dialogues on enduring issues in education. Self-deliberation provides another pedagogical method for preparing aspiring educators to participate in deliberative or discursive democracy. Narrative vignettes are used to illustrate the acts of self-deliberation performed by aspiring teachers of color as they consider controversial issues such as affirmative action, racial segregation, and culturally relevant education.

How To "Align" An Online Finance Course Using Capital Budgeting Analysis, Martina K. Schmidt Jan 2013

How To "Align" An Online Finance Course Using Capital Budgeting Analysis, Martina K. Schmidt

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

The assessment of business courses and their learning goals and objectives is important for accredited business schools. However, not all business educators are necessarily knowledgeable and trained in designing appropriate learning objectives and aligning all aspects of a course around these learning objectives. This paper tries to fill this gap for business instructors by describing the concept of alignment. This paper also applies the concept of alignment to the specific learning module of capital budgeting analysis in an online MBA level corporate finance class. Important observations are given that help an instructor align a class with the course objectives, materials …

Evaluation Of Using An Interrupted Behavior Chain Procedure To Teach Mands To Children With Autism, Blair Nichole Jacobsen Jan 2013

Evaluation Of Using An Interrupted Behavior Chain Procedure To Teach Mands To Children With Autism, Blair Nichole Jacobsen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Interrupted behavior chain procedures have been shown to be an effective way to teach individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism to mand for missing objects and information concerning missing objects. Research has shown that an interrupted behavior chain procedure is more effective than traditional mand teach trials, which occur at the onset of a behavior chain or in a massed trial format. However, there is a lack of research evaluating the use of interrupted behavior chain procedures to teach vocal mands for missing items and the possible generalization effects thereof. This study evaluated the acquisition of vocal mands for …

Perceptual Responses To High-Intensity Interval Training In Overweight And Sedentary Individuals, Nicholas Martinez Jan 2013

Perceptual Responses To High-Intensity Interval Training In Overweight And Sedentary Individuals, Nicholas Martinez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary aerobic exercise guidelines comprised of continuous durations and higher intensities have been shown to be effective in the prevention and treatment of risk factors associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has recently been examined as an advantageous protocol for producing more favorable physiological and psychological benefits in comparison to traditional continuous exercise guidelines. The dual-mode model, which examines the dose response relationship between exercise intensity and affective valence, would suggest that exercise performed well above the ventilatory threshold (VT) in the severe domain should result in negative affective valence.

Numerous investigations have confirmed …

The Relationship Among Career Thoughts, Optimism, And Spirituality In Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Levette Subraina Dames Jan 2013

The Relationship Among Career Thoughts, Optimism, And Spirituality In Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Levette Subraina Dames

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship of dysfunctional career thoughts, optimism, and spirituality on Bahamian women (n=212) diagnosed with breast cancer. Also, it examined how optimism mediates the relationship between spirituality and dysfunctional career thoughts. The diagnosis of breast cancer impacts women physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually, financially, and in their career development. Career developmental plans and decisions are continuously being made. However, plans may become altered and decisions more difficult to make when a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer as she considers returning to work. The high survival rate of breast cancer patients indicates women may continue to work after …

"They Are Only Going To Steal Your Cars." : An Ethnodrama About Teaching In The Chicago Public Schools, Charles Vanover

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

The center of this ethnodrama is a brief dialogue voiced by an African-American, National Board Certified teacher, where she shared the advice the African American principal in her previous school gave her about her classroom’s many special needs students. “It’s one of those schools where, like, if your heart is not in it, your kids are going to feel it. And then, she also gets awesome teachers, but our principal knows how to make them go away! Like I did. I stayed there for two years, and it was just like, you have to believe in your kids. You know, …

Language And Literacy Of Pre-Adolescent/Adolescent Bilingual Students: Current Research, Alejandro E. Brice Jan 2013

Language And Literacy Of Pre-Adolescent/Adolescent Bilingual Students: Current Research, Alejandro E. Brice

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

It is well documented that pre-adolescent and adolescent English learners (ELs) are at-risk for reading difficulties (Escamilla, Chavez, & Vigil, 2005; Lopez, 2009; Hemphill, Vanneman & Rahman, 2011; Snow, Burns & Griffin, 1998; Waxman, Padrón, Shin, & Rivera, 2008). Kohler and Lazarín (2007) stated, nationally only 29% of EL 8th grade students scored at or above the basic reading achievement levels. In comparison, nationally the non-EL 8th grade students scored at 75% at or above the basic reading achievement levels. In addition, the achievement gap among English learning (EL) students has existed and continues to exist. Unfortunately, this gap widens …
