What A Long Strange Trip It’S Been: A Comparison Of Authors, Abstracts, And References In The 1991 And 2010 Icls Proceedings, Victor R. Lee, Lei Ye, Mimi Recker Jan 2012

What A Long Strange Trip It’S Been: A Comparison Of Authors, Abstracts, And References In The 1991 And 2010 Icls Proceedings, Victor R. Lee, Lei Ye, Mimi Recker

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

We examine differences in authorship, word usage, and references in full papers from the 1991 and 2010 ICLS proceedings. Through a series of analyses, we observe that, while authors largely hail from the US, national and regional participation in the LS community has broadened. Word usage suggests a shift in emphasis from cognitive issues to ones that are both cognitive and cultural. Reference analysis indicates a shift in core literatures and influential authors.

Criteria For Evaluating Journals In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In Agriculture, Natural Resources, And The Life Sciences, Marianne S. Bracke, Sharon A. Weiner, Judith M. Nixon, Scott Deatherage Jan 2012

Criteria For Evaluating Journals In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In Agriculture, Natural Resources, And The Life Sciences, Marianne S. Bracke, Sharon A. Weiner, Judith M. Nixon, Scott Deatherage

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The purpose of this paper was to identify existing criteria that may be considered in evaluating journals in the scholarship of teaching and learning in agriculture, natural resources, and the life sciences. This can assist faculty authors and evaluators of promotion and tenure cases to explain indicators of the quality of the publications. The commonly accepted criteria are: peer review; acceptance rate; longevity; open access availability; inclusion in indexing/abstracting services; citation analysis; and expert opinion. These data were collected for a representative set of journals which indicated that: acceptance rates for the journals varied widely; most of the journals existed …

On The Road To Internationalization: Designing An International Student Handbook For Northern New Mexico College, Sara M. Mccormick Jan 2012

On The Road To Internationalization: Designing An International Student Handbook For Northern New Mexico College, Sara M. Mccormick

Capstone Collection

The United States continues to host more international students than any other country in the world. According to the recent Open Doors 2010/11 report published annually by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by five percent to 723, 277 during the 2010/11 academic year (Open Doors, 2011). Currently, there are approximately 2, 724 international students studying in colleges and universities across New Mexico (Open Doors, 2011). As the number of international students increases at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC), located in Espanola, New Mexico, it becomes …

Professional Identity Development In Online Christian Theological Education: A Case Study Of Preparing Pastoral Practice Through Discursive Activity, Rovina L. Hatcher Jan 2012

Professional Identity Development In Online Christian Theological Education: A Case Study Of Preparing Pastoral Practice Through Discursive Activity, Rovina L. Hatcher

Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction

The purpose of this dissertation study was to explore the professional preparation of students in online classes at a Christian theological seminary. Concerns of theological education involve the capacity or incapacity of community development and somatic or embodied learning in online education. Using a theoretical framework drawn from communities of practice (Wenger, 1998), professional clergical preparation (Foster, Dahill, Golemon, & Tolentino, 2005), and Gee’s (2000-2001) dimensions of identity development, the researcher focused the analyses on students’ written texts located in the discussion board fora of the online courses. These records were examined for indications of formation of the professional identity …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Small Business Owner-Managers' Participation And Learning In An Online Discussion Forum : Not Quite Paradise Found, Tara Laureen Smith Jan 2012

A Qualitative Analysis Of Small Business Owner-Managers' Participation And Learning In An Online Discussion Forum : Not Quite Paradise Found, Tara Laureen Smith

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Small business owner-managers (SBOMs) are a difficult group to engage in formal face-to-face training and learning activities. Research to encourage SBOMs' participation has focused on two main themes: first, trying to ascertain why they do not attend training and, second, determining their learning preferences. They are reluctant to attend formal training because they prioritise business operations (no time to attend training), perceive training as a poor return on investment, have negative perceptions of training and education, and believe the training provision often does not meet their needs. In terms of their learning preferences, it is clear that SBOMs prefer informal, …

Developing Knowledge For Real World Problem Scenarios : Using 3d Gaming Technology Within A Problem-Based Learning Framework, Michael Garrett Jan 2012

Developing Knowledge For Real World Problem Scenarios : Using 3d Gaming Technology Within A Problem-Based Learning Framework, Michael Garrett

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Problem-based learning is an instructional strategy that emphasises active and experiential learning through problem-solving activity. Using gaming technologies to embed this approach in a three-dimensional (3D) simulation environment provides users with a dynamic, responsive, visually engaging, and cost effective learning experience. Representing real world problems in 3D simulation environments develops knowledge and skills that are applicable to their resolution.

The Simulation, User, and Problem-based Learning (SUPL) Design Framework was developed to inform the design of learning environments which develop problem-solving knowledge for real world application. This framework identifies design factors relative to the user, the problem-solving task, and the 3D …

Working Through Whiteness: White Male College Students Challenging Racism, Nolan L. Cabrera Dec 2011

Working Through Whiteness: White Male College Students Challenging Racism, Nolan L. Cabrera

Nolan L. Cabrera

This qualitative study relies upon Freire’s conception of liberatory praxis to examine White male college students becoming aware of racism and translating this awareness into action. The participants developed racial cognizance via both cross-racial contact and course content. Key to this development was empathy derived from minority experiences that facilitated a willingness to understand racial minority experiences. The participants took actions against racism but continued to struggle with race (e.g., essentializing minority experiences). The findings demonstrate the importance of race-based education, empathy, and cross-racial contact in promoting racial identity development, while also illustrating the nonlinear trajectory of racial identity development.

Assessing The Strategic Credibility Of Special Collections And Archives, Rick A. Stoddart, Erin L. Passehl Dec 2011

Assessing The Strategic Credibility Of Special Collections And Archives, Rick A. Stoddart, Erin L. Passehl

Rick A Stoddart

In this time of often precarious funding at many colleges and universities, any case that can be made to illustrate how a department strategically fits into the overall university mission is not only worth merit, but an essential survival technique. This “strategic credibility” within the university is a vital form of currency in determining institution-wide resources prioritization, collaboration opportunities between organizational units, and overall direction of departments. This poster provides a case study of academic special collections in the Northwest and examines the methods these departments use to demonstrate value to the university. This poster considers how well do special …
