Dimensions Of Capacity For Shared Decision Making, Cheryl Grayson Reynolds
Dimensions Of Capacity For Shared Decision Making, Cheryl Grayson Reynolds
Legacy ETDs
This study was based on the rationale that no school district should design or implement a restructuring or reform initiative such as shared decision making (SDM) without a careful examination of the existing level of all the interrelated dimensions of restructuring and reform in each school. A school's capacity is critical for successful reform; therefore, if policy makers are to design successful policies, they must pay attention to the multiple dimensions of capacity in a school's climate.
This study's first purpose was to develop a survey instrument based on the precepts of shared decision making as a restructuring mechanism for …

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The current study was a utilization-focused implementation evaluation of the 2 + 2 for Teachers: Alternative Performance Appraisal Program (2 + 2). The 2 + 2 program is an experimental appraisal program designed to support substantial instructional reform in the Norfolk, Virginia based PRIME (Public school Restructuring through Innovative Mainstream Education) systemic reform project. Through frequent classroom observations by administrators, peers, and students, who offer two compliments and two suggestions for improvement at each observation, the 2 + 2 program provides a framework for teacher collaboration and professional growth. Ultimately, improved instruction is an expected outcome, but was not evaluated …

The Effects Of Applied Technology Instruction On Mathematics Achievement And Career Interests Of Urban Seventh-Grade Students, Eric M. Fischer
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The present study has been implemented to provide insight as to how, given limited resources, Technology Education curricula might be developed to best support the unique goals of an urban middle school aerospace magnet program. It was hypothesized that applied academic strategies, including interdisciplinary hands-on aerospace and computer-assisted instructional activities, would affect larger gains in mathematics achievement and would enhance career-interest development of urban seventh-grade students to a greater degree than would non-participation in such instruction. A randomized subjects, pretest-posttest control group design was used to assess treatment effects upon 71 urban seventh-grade students. Dependent variables were measured using the …

The area of Career Services on college and university campuses is ever-changing. The boom of technology makes it easier for students to find and examine job openings via the Internet and to put their resume on line. These advancements are good as they help Career Services office's expand their job search services and provide the most current technology available to students while continuing to offer the traditional job search services. According to McBride and Muffin (1991), the main focus of Career Services has always been on helping students develop effective job search skills to obtain an interview and hopefully a …

Selected Factors Influencing Academic Success Of First-Year Students In Seventh-Day Adventist Secondary Schools In Rwanda, Salomon Maniraguha
Dissertations
Problem. Seventh-day Adventist secondary schools recruit students through a severe entrance examination. However, after 9 months of schooling, more than 20% fail without possibility of repeating the grade or pursuing studies in less academically challenging schools. They are pushed out without means of coping with real life. This situation has multiple negative impacts on families who sell all their belongings in order to send their children to school where they can be prepared for a better life. It is for the interest of the Rwandese to learn which factors may contribute to maintaining these students in school.
Method. Data were …

Creating And Measuring Media Literacy : A Case Study, Darin M. Johnson
Creating And Measuring Media Literacy : A Case Study, Darin M. Johnson
Graduate Research Papers
Seven years later, I stood before high school students in Ames, Iowa, with the proposition that we study media as a collection of cultural artifacts. Behind many of our discussions was the assumption that media convey values and that these values influence our personal values. What was missing from my instruction was an organizational structure that would help students see the necessary patterns, methods and stereotypes in order to better comprehend the values in these messages.
After a summer of contemplation, I decided thematic instruction would most naturally allow us to examine important media while capstoning themes from the required …

Talented And Gifted Programs In The Middle School : Critical Components, Patricia R. Kayser
Graduate Research Papers
As middle school educators and teachers of the gifted and talented continue to debate issues such as equity vs. excellence, homogeneous vs. heterogeneous grouping, and cognitive vs. affective education, the needs of gifted and talented middle school students in the general education classroom appear to be ignored. This paper reviewed current literature relating to the needs of gifted and talented pre-adolescents in the middle school setting in order to determine what were the critical components necessary for meeting their unique needs in the general education classroom. From the reviewed literature, critical components identified include content differentiation, teaching strategies, grouping for …

Increasing Students' Use Of Descriptive Words And Figurative Language In Their Writing By Creating A Climate Of Words In The Classroom, Mary Brigid Stanley
Graduate Research Papers
The effects of immersion in a climate of words and subsequent use of descriptive words and figures of speech in student writing was investigated in a Grade 6 language arts classroom. Five students were exposed to a climate of words for six weeks. The hypothesis was made that a climate of words in the classroom will have an effect on students' writing. The same common prompt essay assignment was given at the beginning and end of the six weeks, and the number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, sensory words, and figures of speech were compared. Writing samples related to two thematic units, one in science and the other in social studies, are discussed. Descriptions of the children's writing experiences, photographs that accompany student selected pieces, and students' self-reflections are presented. This portfolio experience …

I am proud to introduce the sixth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Four case studies provided a compilation of information from teachers representative of different disciplines, school settings, gender, and experience levels. Survey research, conducted through the use of an instrument designed by M. J. Fimian (1988), "The Teacher Concerns Inventory," was distributed to 166 music educators within an Area Education Agency in a Midwestern state providing a return rate of 62%. The research …

A Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Denise R. Aalderks
Graduate Research Papers
When I first entered the administration program, I remember thinking that when I finished classes, I would be prepared to become a successful administrator with the wealth of knowledge I had gained. As the time draws nearer, I see that experience, talking to other professionals, and the knowledge that has been afforded me, all balance out as guides for the near future. The knowledge I will have gained from this program will be only a part of my knowledge base. By this I mean, it is important that one does not see oneself as having all of the answers, but …
