The Clark County School District has long recognized the need to provide training and support for teachers and other staff in the area of multicultural education. In 1992, the development and funding of a multicultural education program, Project MCE, formalized, for the first time, the district's commitment to providing students with a true multicultural education. Project MCE is a part of the CCSD Compensatory Education Division, Elise Ax, Assistant Superintendent.

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter
The emerging philosophy of the Multicultural and Diversity Committee is that excellence in education cannot be achieved without educational equity for all who enter our schools. This includes (but is not limited to) females, males, people of color, people who live in poverty, people who live alternative lifestyles, people with disabilities, people with a language background other than English, people of all ages, and people who have recently immigrated to the United States. Educational equity is defined by processes that work against marginalization and foster knowledge of and respect for the diverse nature of our population.

Creating And Measuring Media Literacy : A Case Study, Darin M. Johnson
Creating And Measuring Media Literacy : A Case Study, Darin M. Johnson
Graduate Research Papers
Seven years later, I stood before high school students in Ames, Iowa, with the proposition that we study media as a collection of cultural artifacts. Behind many of our discussions was the assumption that media convey values and that these values influence our personal values. What was missing from my instruction was an organizational structure that would help students see the necessary patterns, methods and stereotypes in order to better comprehend the values in these messages.
After a summer of contemplation, I decided thematic instruction would most naturally allow us to examine important media while capstoning themes from the required …
Photographs To Enhance The Exhibits In Writing Portfolios, Carol R. Winterboer
Photographs To Enhance The Exhibits In Writing Portfolios, Carol R. Winterboer
Graduate Research Papers
Writing portfolios in a third grade classroom were used to more closely relate assessment to students' instructional needs. Photographs of students' involvement in experiences across the curriculum were offered for students to use with their writing. The photographs served to enhance the students' pieces of writing or were used in place of an artifact that was impractical to include in a portfolio. Writing samples related to two thematic units, one in science and the other in social studies, are discussed. Descriptions of the children's writing experiences, photographs that accompany student selected pieces, and students' self-reflections are presented. This portfolio experience …

Swosu Fact Book Fall 1997, Denisa Engelman
Fact Books
I am proud to introduce the sixth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Floyd Athay
A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Floyd Athay
Graduate Research Papers
I believe in being a proactive administrator. I do not want to be recognized simply as the authority figure in the school that is rarely seen. My door will always be open, and I will be seen in the classrooms as well as throughout the school. I want to be active in the teaching process.
My first year as a principal will be a time for me to become familiar with the school environment. I will not make any major changes the first year unless I am forced to do so. I believe that this time should be spent becoming …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Steven D. Goodall
Graduate Research Papers
The role of an educational leader is constantly changing. The techniques of top-down leadership in schools today seem to have outlived their effectiveness. Bonstingl (1992), suggests that the Industrial Model (established by Frederick Winslow Taylor), in which management worries about quotas and quality while subservient workers fulfilled management's request without questioning the overall plan involved in process, has stagnated school effectiveness and proven to be a barrier to school reform. In order for leadership to be effective in today's society it is essential that a paradigm shift is made from top-down strategies to strategies which involve more collaboration between the …
Writing A Defensible Personal Education Plan : Rationale And Design, Mary Kay Desenberg Johnson
Writing A Defensible Personal Education Plan : Rationale And Design, Mary Kay Desenberg Johnson
Graduate Research Papers
Iowa requires documentation of qualitatively differentiated curriculum for identified talented and gifted students by schools using allowable growth funding. In response to this directive, a local special education Individual Education Plan (IEP) documentation format was modified to a Personal Education Plan (PEP) format for gifted learners.
Construction and refinement of the format continued over a seven year period. The use of the familiar IEP process seemed to afford credibility and was readily accepted by staff, parents, and administration. The PEP format held the program for gifted and talented to a high standard of accountability, and a six step model evolved …
Why It Is Important To Keep Recess In Schools, Mary Lou Mcgee Cushing
Why It Is Important To Keep Recess In Schools, Mary Lou Mcgee Cushing
Graduate Research Papers
Recess is a common part of most elementary school schedules yet its benefits are often not clearly articulated. As a result recess may be thought to be expendable from school curricula as school districts adjust already full schedules in an attempt to accommodate every necessary component.
This research review explores the relationship of recess to school schedules, time allotments, activities commonly observed at recess, and developmental (social, cognitive, and psychomotor) aspects of recess in schools. Also addressed are common criticisms of recess in schools.

Administrative Response To Teacher Incompetence: The Role Of Teacher Evaluation Systems, Pamela Dupriest Tucker
Administrative Response To Teacher Incompetence: The Role Of Teacher Evaluation Systems, Pamela Dupriest Tucker
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The major purpose of this study was to assess the presence of evaluation system components which assist principals in responding to teachers with less than satisfactory performance. Research data were used to determine the relationship between specific teacher evaluation system components and two measures of evaluation system effectiveness: (a) the principal's overall effectiveness rating of the evaluation system and (b) the incidence of administrative response to teacher incompetence. Administrative response included remediation, reassignment, inducement to retire or resign, and recommendation for dismissal of teachers. A questionnaire was employed to collect data from a randomly selected sample of principals in Virginia's …

Understanding And Treating Selective Mutism In Children : A Guide For Counselors, Chelsea R. Carter
Understanding And Treating Selective Mutism In Children : A Guide For Counselors, Chelsea R. Carter
Graduate Research Papers
Selective mutism is a clinical disorder in which a child remains silent in chosen situations despite the ability for speech. Though there are cases of selective mutism in adults, the major population in which this disorder is diagnosed is in children. This paper will focus on these children who meet the criteria for a diagnosis of selective mutism.
There are three major theoretical schools of thought regarding selective mutism. The first deals with hostility and control; the second, anxiety and social phobia; and the third, family communication in regard to the onset and maintenance of this disorder. This paper explores …

"The Teacher Would Call Me 'Piggy', 'Smelley', 'Dirty', Names Like That": Prying Open A Discussion Of Domestic Violence For Educators, Lois M. Weis, Michelle Fine
Publications and Research
(The Teacher) would call me "piggy", "smelly", "dirty", names like that, and the kids started following along with it. And I'd say, by the fourth grade, I started cleaning myself out. I didn't care anymore, but my father had this thing that you were allowed to take a bath once a week. He would measure the shampoo, he would measure the soap, and if he thought somebody was using the shampoo when he said you shouldn't, you'd get a beating. But I got sick of it, and the beatings almost became to be painless when hit with a belt or …
