This report examines the cost effectiveness of the Marchus School's 599/1261 Project, one of two programs funded by the State of California, that established an inclusive education program for 17 students with serious emotional disturbances at risk for nonpublic school placements. The project teaches academic, social, and conflict resolution skills by using a social cognitive approach that fosters healthy emotional development and academic achievement. The active support and participation of each student's family is also encouraged. The increasing demand for performance assessment of speaking skills in second languages has led to logistic complications, for example, the delivery of tests in overseas locations. One solution to the problem has been to train native interlocutors to carry out a series of oral interactions with the candidate, with assessment from audiorecordings of the test session postponed and conducted centrally by a small team of trained raters. But these procedures raise questions about the effect of such facets of the assessment situation as interlocutor variables and the quality of the audiotape recording. The multitude of specializations within biosystems engineering makes traditional capstone design courses, which typically focus on a single topic, less relevant. In our department, our year-long capstone design experience involves machine component design. While this experience is useful to students in all concentrations, ideally, students concentrating on biological-, food-, and soil and water-engineering will have a capstone design experience that integrates their unique technical capabilities. New capstone courses should also enhance the broader skills of undergraduate engineers, including teamwork, time and resource management, oral and written communication, and integrated computer skills. Four the past four years, I have taught the sophomore level course, Agricultural Engineering 243 Material and Energy Flows in Biological Systems each spring semester. During the first offering, I used the lecture method to transmit information, and homework assignments and exams to reinforce skills and test comprehension. The greatest weakness of this technique seemed the lack of hands-on experience which I gave my students, and their subsequent lack of physical intuition. Enhancing their physical intuition drove the first curricular revision—using in-class demonstrations and simulations of key physical and biological processes. This project aimed to explore the school based assessment of levels of student performance on the constructs nominated by the Mayer Committee in their report 'The Key Competencies (1992)'. In a trial assessment 110 teachers in 10 schools across the country were asked to give global assessments of each of the key competencies for a total of 629 Year 11 students they were currently teaching using the key competencies framework developed for the purpose during the project. The 97 bilingual education program enhancement projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs in fiscal 1995 are analyzed for their demographic characteristics, goals and objectives, instructional characteristics, parent and family services, professional development, personnel training, and other program features. A subset of 33 programs was selected for in-depth analysis of features other than demographics. The 97 proposals, distributed among 21 states, served 53,535 students, 36,283 of whom were limited-English-proficient, from 78 language groups and at all grade levels. This paper is the first of a number I planned to carry out on models of excellent in fraternity chapter advising. I am still working on the qualitative data I collected a decade and a half later. The thesis is that if one focused on models of excellence in fraternity operations to learn the manner in which successful leaders and organizations achieve their objectives, much greater progress would be made than focusing on the reduction of negative issues and problems such as alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, and hazing.

In this study of 2- and 4-year colleges, the extent to which women students' perceptions of a "chilly campus climate" were related to first year cognitive outcomes was investigated at 23 institutions. After a variety of potentially confounding influences were controlled for, several negative relationships were found between perceived chilly climates and women's cognitive growth. The negative relationships were more pronounced for women attending 2-year colleges than for their counterparts at 4-year institutions .
