General education is one of those things that everyone knows how to fix but no one is able to do anything about. Woodrow Wilson’s comment about changing the college curriculum, made while he was president of Princeton University, is particularly apt of general education: reforming it “is as difficult as moving a graveyard.” Committees can study the issue for ages and make numerous erudite reports, but when all is said and done, more is said than done. Many reforms meet the standard voiced by Groucho Marx: “there is less here than meets the eye.” It is far easier to resist …

An educator who finds merit in both content- and student-centered instruction may find it difficult to develop a classroom learning program with a firm theoretical base drawing on strengths from both perspectives. The implementation of a collaborative portfolio project as an ongoing curriculum reformation is described.

The North Atlantic Conference moves into its sixteenth year with an eye toward the future. Having just completed one of its finest years ever, both on and off the playing field, the conference is on the move as the 1994-95 academic year arrives. On April 14, 1994, Commissioner Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. announced that Hofstra University and Towson State University had accepted invitations to join the North Atlantic Conference.
