Sensitivity Of The Comp Objective Test To Structural Differences Among General Education Programs In Liberal Arts Colleges And Comprehensive Universities, Christine Ann Brooks

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of the College Outcome Measures Program (COMP) by determining if COMP is sensitive to differences among general education programs.

Two variables provided the operationalization of general education: (1) degree of institutional control over general education course selection, and (2) percent of total coursework devoted to general education. To control for additional factors known to impact upon students' learning during college, four concomitant variables were used in the analysis. These variables were selected following a review of the literature on the effects of college. The level of analysis was the institution; …

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sign language on letter-sound recognition of a non-hearing impaired, developmentally delayed student. A single subject was probed on letter-sound recognition skills and then three letters were selected that the subject did not know. The subject was taught sign language (i.e., fingerspelling for each of the three letters and a sign for a cue word for each letter) to enhance letter recognition skills . Using a multiple probe across behaviors design, it was found that after three weeks sign language improved the subject's performance at letter recognition and naming of …

Criteria For Students To Exit From Elementary School Learning Disability Programs, Hannah G. Vaughan

Theses & Honors Papers

Criteria for students to exit from elementary school learning disability programs were studied. A survey was sent to Special Education supervisors in public school districts in Virginia to gather information concerning LD exit criteria. It was predicted that most school divisions would not have criteria for exiting from their elementary learning disabilities programs. Discussion presented possible exit criteria from elementary school learning disability programs in Virginia. Much of the research found focuses on the needs of the regular education teacher or the school division rather than on the needs of the child. Eligibility and exit criteria were surprisingly similar in …

Results From The First World-Wide Web Survey, James Pitkow, Mimi Recker

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

The explosion of World-Wide Web (WWW) across the Internet is staggering, both in terms of number of users and the amount of activity. However, to date, no reliable characterization exists of WWW users. In this paper, we report results from a survey that was posted on the Web for a month, in January of 1994. There were several goals motivating our survey. First, we wished to demonstrate a proof of concept for WWW technologies as a useful survey medium. Second, we wanted to bet a-test the design and content of surveys dealing with the Web. Third, as mentioned, we hoped …

Using A Time Delay Procedure To Increase Pragmatic Language Skills With A Child With Neurological Impairments, Karla Gravitt

Theses & Honors Papers

Many studies have researched increasing language skills using a time delay procedure with children with autism and children with mental retardation, but there is little existing literature using a time delay procedure to increase language skills with children with neurological impairments. The purpose of this study was to show how time delay could increase pragmatic skills in a child with neurological impairments . The following single subject study was designed to test the hypothesis that three self care words could be taught, using a time delay procedure, to enable a child with neurological impairments to function more independently in social …

Experiences And Attitudes Of Post-Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities In Public And Private College Settings, Laura A. Goodell Apr 1994

Experiences And Attitudes Of Post-Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities In Public And Private College Settings, Laura A. Goodell

Theses & Honors Papers

Research and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (Public Law 101 -476) suggest students with learning disabilities need a transition program from high school to post-secondary education. This study examines the attitudes and experiences of twenty students with learning disabilities who attend three different colleges in Virginia. These students were identified as having a learning disability prior to post-secondary education. One of the colleges that participated was public and co-educational. The other two were private, one all-male, and one all-female. This study also attempts to identify correlations between special education services in the high school and student's attitudes and success …

“Knowledge Utilization” Universities: A Paradigm For Applying Academic Expertise To Social And Environmental Problems, Abraham B. Bernstein Apr 1994

“Knowledge Utilization” Universities: A Paradigm For Applying Academic Expertise To Social And Environmental Problems, Abraham B. Bernstein

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

Promoting the utilization of knowledge is an important mission for institutions of higher education. The "knowledge utilization" university should stand alongside the research university, the professional school, the liberal arts college, and the community college as one of the five archetypes of higher education institutions.

Environmental problems typify a class of social problems that require the utilization of existing knowledge in a trans-disciplinary manner just as much as they require the creation of new knowledge through research. These problems are characterized by their multiple dimensions-- they have scientific, technical, social, political, economic, and ethical aspects, all of which must be …

Further Comments On The Use Of The Lsi In Research On Student Performance In Introductory Accounting, Marshall A. Geiger, Edmund J. Boyle Apr 1994

Further Comments On The Use Of The Lsi In Research On Student Performance In Introductory Accounting, Marshall A. Geiger, Edmund J. Boyle

Accounting Faculty Publications

In this note we respond to the comments of Ruble and Stout (1993) concerning the use of the revised Learning Style Inventory (LSI) developed by Kolb (1985). While our more recent psychometric research on the LSI leads us to conclude that the standard version should no longer be used, unlike Ruble and Stout, we see promise for new or modified versions in future research. We also indicate where several of their comments on our work, as well as the work of others, are not well founded.

A Descriptive Study Of The Physical Education Programs For Kindergarten Through Third Grade Students In Michigan, Allison Ann Hammond

Dissertations

‘The period of early childhood is a crucial time for the balanced, optimal development of the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of human behavior” (McClenahan & Gallahue, 1978, p. 5) According to noted authorities in the field of physical education such as Cratty (1979), and Roach and Kephart (1966), who have conducted large scale investigations of normal motor development of children, early elementary students are at a crucial point in motor development. When discussing the interaction between physical activity and growth, Shepherd (1982) stated that preschool and early elementary school students should develop basic motor skills which are prerequisite to …

Interim Summative Evaluation: Assessing The Value Of A Long Term Or Ongoing Program During Its Operation, Sharon Craven Dodson Apr 1994

Interim Summative Evaluation: Assessing The Value Of A Long Term Or Ongoing Program During Its Operation, Sharon Craven Dodson

Dissertations

Evaluation conducted for the purpose of certifying a program's utility or summarizing its value is summative in nature. Most commonly, summative evaluations are conducted retrospectively to provide a record for program accountability. In the case of long term programs that may run ten or twenty years, however, there is often a need to conduct summative evaluations while the program is operating, so that value and utility can be assessed at various stages of the program's development. This study was designed to develop the concept and methodology for conducting these interim summative evaluations.

Through a review of research, characteristics of interim …

Profiles Of Promise: Students With Learning Difference Prepare For Optimal Foreign Language Learning, Ludmilla Coven Apr 1994

Profiles Of Promise: Students With Learning Difference Prepare For Optimal Foreign Language Learning, Ludmilla Coven

Dissertations

Many secondary school counselors discourage students with diagnosed native language deficits from foreign language studies. They hold the unsubstantiated belief that these studies would jeopardize their hard-earned gains in native language learning. Research disproves that position, and some writers advocate foreign language study to improve language learning and enhance cognitive strategies. Improvement occurs more readily when the instructor has the expertise to choose from a repertoire of teaching styles the one most compatible with the learning style of the student. With the full inclusion promised by the regular education initiative becoming a reality, this study explores research, design, and team-teaching …

Calibrating Essay Markers With The Partial Credit Model, Geoff Masters, Siek Khoo Mar 1994

Calibrating Essay Markers With The Partial Credit Model, Geoff Masters, Siek Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

This paper shows how a range of differences in marker behaviour, including leniency/severity and central tendency, can be detected and investigated using the Rasch partial credit model. The method allows for variations in the use of rating categories by estimating a set of rating 'thresholds' for each assessor. By calibrating each assessor's rating behaviour in this way, the method automatically takes account of detected differences among assessors in the measurement process.
