G90-990 Explosion Venting And Suppression Of Bucket Elevator Legs, David D. Jones

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Explosion vents and explosion suppression devices limit the danger and damage associated with grain dust explosions. This NebGuide discusses these devices and design guidelines for application on bucket elevator legs.

The bucket elevator leg has been identified as a major source of grain dust explosions. As a bucket elevator leg conveys grain, the elements necessary for a grain dust explosion are possible. Fuel (grain dust in suspension above the minimum explosive concentration), oxygen and confinement are inherent inside a functioning bucket elevator leg. Introduction of an ignition source will initiate a grain dust explosion.

What should you consider in building coalitions? This NebGuide offers guidelines.

What is a Coalition?

1. A coalition is a group of organizations and individuals working together for a common purpose. There are two types of coalitions:

2. "One issue" or event coalitions only have to agree on one particular issue. The coalition is dissolved when the issue has been solved or the event has been coordinated.

"Multi issues" coalitions have related issues, such as nutrition and health, child care needs, elderly health care, or the environment. This more permanent type of coalition recognizes the value of mobilizing together for …

Distress In A Sample Of Teachers, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 1990

Distress In A Sample Of Teachers, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Examined the links between job-related stressors and depressive and psychophysiologic symptoms and morale in 67 New York City teachers. The teachers' mean score on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was higher than might be expected from average community residents. The CES-D and a psychophysiologic symptom scale were correlated as highly as their reliabilities would permit, indicating that they measure the same construct, nonspecific psychological distress. The level of job strain (frequency of ongoing stressors) was more closely related to psychological distress and low morale than episodic stressors, including crimes in which the teacher was …

Coping With Job-Related Stress: The Case Of Teachers, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 1990

Coping With Job-Related Stress: The Case Of Teachers, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Investigated the relationship between coping measures, psychological distress, and job-related morale among 67 teachers. Five occupational coping scales were constructed: advice seeking (ASK), positive comparisons (PCs), selective ignoring (SEL), discipline, and direct action (DIR). Multiple regression analyses with controls for social-demographic factors and adversity in the job environment indicated that ASK and DIR were most consistently related to lower (depressive and psychophysiologic) symptom levels and that PCs and DIR were most consistently related to higher morale (job satisfaction and motivation to continue in the profession). SEL appeared to buffer the impact of adverse work environments on symptoms. Findings suggest that …

Application Of Zero-Base Budgeting In The Learning Resource Center, Javad Raiesdana Jan 1990

Application Of Zero-Base Budgeting In The Learning Resource Center, Javad Raiesdana

Masters Theses

Budgeting is a statement of the organizational goals and objectives in monetary terms. Traditionally, budgets have been developed by adding to the previous year's budget as a base (at least in theory), but rather to start from a zero base and requires a justification of all expenditures. This method of budgeting assumes that each years's budget requests are built up from zero in response to the priorities and needs of that year.

The range of opinion about zero-base budgeting is broad. Some critics regard it to be of great value while others feel that it is inadequate. The purpose of …
