School sites were chosen by their socioeconomic status as determined by the percentage of free or reduced lunches as listed in Statistical Highlights, 1989-1990, published by the Dade County Planning Department. All 300 students were administered the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), a self report questionnaire designed to assess the cognitive and …

Developing A Self-Directed Computer Training Program For El Camino College Faculty, Donald F. Mcallister Nov 1990

Developing A Self-Directed Computer Training Program For El Camino College Faculty, Donald F. Mcallister

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This study arose from discussions with the deans of instruction of El Camino College, California, during which it appeared that there was a need to develop self-directed faculty training programs in the use of computers. There was little necessity to convince the computer-literate faculty that microcomputers should be used in their educational activities. However, it was difficult to make faculty who were not computer-literate see the usefulness of microcomputers in their work, or to convince them to take advantage of existing staff development programs in computer training. Developing self-directed programs in computer training and basic computer literacy seemed to be …

Use Of Selected Elements Of Patient Perception Of Care In The Evaluation Of Clinical Training, Patrick J. Goff

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to develop a role for the patient perception of care provided by the student doctor within the educational program at Palmer College. The Council on Chiropractic Education, the federally recognized accrediting body of the profession, has indicated that the perception of care by the patient receiving that care should be an important outcome measure of the education process in the colleges. At the time of this study the patient's perception of care was not used in evaluating clinical competence. A review of the literature resulted in the selection of the Patient-Doctor Interaction Scale (PDIS) …

A Comparative Analysis Of Student Success On The College Level Academic Skills Test When Instructor Characteristics Are Considered, Anna M. Puzsik Jul 1990

A Comparative Analysis Of Student Success On The College Level Academic Skills Test When Instructor Characteristics Are Considered, Anna M. Puzsik

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The tremendous increase of part-time faculty members has been well documented in recent years and continued growth trends are predicted. From 1970 to 1980, part-time faculty members increased faster than full-time faculty and recent studies estimate that at least one in every three faculty members is employed part-time. While the use of adjunct faculty has helped many colleges adjust to uncertain and fluctuating funding patterns, the instructional efficacy of the use of adjunct faculty may be questioned. In Florida, this nationwide trend is of particular importance since students must take and pass a test of college-level computation and communication skills …

An Investigation Into The Feasibility Of Incorporating Additional Specializations And Concentrations Into The Programs For Higher Education Curriculum Structure, William M. Kaye Jul 1990

An Investigation Into The Feasibility Of Incorporating Additional Specializations And Concentrations Into The Programs For Higher Education Curriculum Structure, William M. Kaye

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The last major curriculum change in the Programs for Higher Education (PHE) took place seven years ago when the specialization courses were incorporated into the summer institute. Since that time there have been significant changes in the higher education environment which have impacted on the vitality and marketability of the PHE programs. Changes in PHE student demographics have also contributed to an increasing concern about the lack of variety of courses in the academic program, as well issues such as the viability of introducing more specific fields of specialization and/or concentrations to the programs, the potential need for a more …

Secondary English teachers participated in the creation of the Operation Relief handbook under the guidance of the quality circle coordinator. The results of the creation and dissemination of this handbook indicated a decrease in the level of frustration. The results of this approach provide significant information on the need for teacher input regarding problem solutions. It was concluded that the use of the …

An Analysis Of The Relationships Between Selected Variables Affecting The School Nurses' Role In Working With Students With Handicaps, Gail Synoground Jul 1990

An Analysis Of The Relationships Between Selected Variables Affecting The School Nurses' Role In Working With Students With Handicaps, Gail Synoground

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to analyze relationships between selected role theory variables and the school nurse's role in working with students with handicapping conditions. Public Law 94-142 mandates that all students be educated in the least restrictive environment possible, resulting in enrollment of students with disabilities and other health impairments that often require special health services. This mandate has necessitated that school nurses re-evaluate their roles in assisting handicapped students to receive an appropriate education. Further, there is some question as to the educational needs and preparation of school nurses to fulfill their responsibilities in the …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older). The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

This practicum addressed the need to develop an alternative method of teaching reading to learning disabled students who have experienced little success in this area. The necessity for implementation was documented by students' 1989 scores on the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Basic Skills, reading portion. A baseline of students’ pre-intervention performance in oral reading, comprehension, and word recognition both in context and in isolation was established. These scores were compared with post-intervention scores and with students' 1990 scores on the Brigance Test, reading portion. The Heathington Attitude Scale was administered pre and post intervention to determine positive changes in students’ …
