The Element Of Predictability In Whole Language Instruction, Janice E. Siefken Jan 1989

The Element Of Predictability In Whole Language Instruction, Janice E. Siefken

Graduate Research Papers

FUN WITH DICK AND JANE conjures up memories in the minds of many adults in this country. Most will agree that the name was really a misnomer. Their first book was actually pretty dull, and, for many, the whole process of learning to read was fraught with anxiety. Beginning reading instruction in the United States has traditionally involved heavy dependence on basal readers which use a controlled vocabulary and a detailed hierarchy of skills. A current trend in early reading instruction emphasizes a whole language approach rather than a skills emphasis approach often associated with basal readers. Studies show that …

The Influence Of Parental Attitude And Behavior On Early Adolescent Cigarette Smoking, Ian Newman, Jolene M. Ward Jan 1989

The Influence Of Parental Attitude And Behavior On Early Adolescent Cigarette Smoking, Ian Newman, Jolene M. Ward

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

In 1983, Nolte and colleagues reported parental attitude may be more powerful than parental behavior in shaping adolescent cigarette smoking behavior. This study replicates the finding of Nolte et al. and suggests parents need to be actively recruited to discourage their children from smoking, regardless of their own behavior. Fewer parents actively discourage youth smoking today than in 1983, a possible unfortunate result from on apparently successful effort to change the public attitude toward cigarette smoking.

Administrative Stress, Jerry Lee Hartwell Jan 1989

Administrative Stress, Jerry Lee Hartwell

Graduate Research Papers

Selye (1976) defines stress as "the nonspecific response of the body to any demand". The phrase "administrative stress" is often used to describe the hazard of being an administrator in an educational environment. There has been a very significant increase in the pressures that people in all levels of administration have to face and it is leading to administrative stress. A review of the literature indicates that the phrases "administrative stress" and "administrative burnout" are used interchangeable to describe this condition. What causes stress, what are the physical and mental symptoms of stress; and what can be done about administrative …

A Comparison Between Psi-Based And Self-Contained Formats Of Instruction In The Introductory Speech Communication Course, Pamela L. Gray, Nancy L. Buerkel-Rothfuss, Richard W. Thomas

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study assesses differences between two instructional methods in a basic speech communication course: a modified Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) and a self contained format. Communication skills, communication apprehension, self-esteem, and academic achievement in, perceptions about, and satisfaction with the course are compared. Using t-tests to compare means and mean exchange scores, the PSI-based format was found to be more effective than the self-contained format. Comparing these data with an earlier study designed to compare the PSI-based format with more traditional lecture-recitation format, the self-contained approach appears to be a better alternative than the lecture-recitation for teaching the course, …

Australianising Social Welfare Education: The Development Of A Major Sequence 'Australian Cultural Studies' In A New B.Soc.Sci. (Community Service), Peter J. Camilleri, Rosemary Kennedy, Rod Oxenberry

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Much of social welfare education in Australia is built upon the tried and tested knowledge bases developed within American and British approaches to social work and welfare provision. The experience of those two countries has dominated the theoretical frameworks for practice intervention and indeed, the analysis of social problems and societal responses to them. Australian experience has tended to play a supplementary role in that differences in context have altered or modified aspects of these overseas approaches, or some peculiar aspect of case experience has led to variations in response. The review and development of educational programs for social welfare …

Factors Affecting Persistence Of Re-Entry Women At An Urban State University, Carolyn Sheriff Mayfield

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that affect the persistence of re-entry women over age twenty-five at an urban state university using Vincent Tinto's academic-social fit theory of retention and persistence which posits that once this fit is achieved, persistence and retention will be positively affected.;The re-entry women's population at Urban State University, an historically black university, was studied. It was chosen because of its mission of serving special populations, its size, its historical prominence, and its location in an urban community.;Urban State University had an available pool of eighty-eight women over age twenty-five who were …

Personality Style And Newly Amplified Hearing-Impaired Adults, Teresa A. Walker Jan 1989

Personality Style And Newly Amplified Hearing-Impaired Adults, Teresa A. Walker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There were two purposes of this research. First, the personality characteristics of the newly amplified hearing-impaired adult were examined. Second, the effect of the combination of the individual's knowledge of their personality type and their use of the hearing aid on their perception of hearing handicap was investigated. The need for an individualized approach to aural rehabilitation has been repeatedly stressed (Alpiner, 1982a; McCarthy & Alpiner, 1982). The understanding of individual personality types would be a step in the development of remedial programs that are adapted to the individual. There is little information that describes the newly amplified hearing impaired …

Ku-Band Satellite Telecommunications And Its Implications For Education, Constance J. Miller Jan 1989

Ku-Band Satellite Telecommunications And Its Implications For Education, Constance J. Miller

Graduate Research Papers

The world of telecommunications is expanding at a fast rate. The word telecommunications comes from the Greek word "tele" which means "far off". Communications means "the act of imparting or exchanging information, knowledge, and ideas" (Carne, 1984, p.5). Together the word telecommunications means "communicating at a distance". How did telecommunications arise? Historically people have always had to come together face to face in order to communicate. This began to change with the advent of writing skills. Communication could then occur at greater distances by means of sending a letter or message from one person to the other. With increasingly better …

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver Jan 1989

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver

Graduate Research Papers

Although the brain functions as a whole unit with both sides being active, there are areas of specialization within the brain. Research indicates that the human brain is composed of two hemispheres, which are capable of functioning independently of one another. According to Michael Gazzaniga (1983), the left hemisphere is responsible for linear, symbolic, sequential and verbal thought. The right hemisphere is responsible for holistic, concrete, random and pictorial thoughts. The left can be compared to a computer while the right is more creative and intuitive. Individuals tend to develop a preference for using one side over the other, although …

Fostering Children's Comprehension Abilities Through Story Retelling, Beverly Graves Jan 1989

Fostering Children's Comprehension Abilities Through Story Retelling, Beverly Graves

Graduate Research Papers

Children's involvement in whole units of language can facilitate opportunities to create meaning and to interact with others, therefore strengthening thinking and language abilities (Goodman, 1986). Parents and teachers can become facilitators of whole language by offering children many opportunities to hear stories. Trelease (1982) describes how children who hear many stories develop a strong motivation for reading, learn that reading can be enjoyable, and discover that reading and writing are "sense-making" experiences instead of activities dealing with language fragments as offered in many workbook pages and worksheets.
