Does The Generality Of Philosophy Of Education Ensure Its Triviality?, Paul Hagar Jan 1989

Does The Generality Of Philosophy Of Education Ensure Its Triviality?, Paul Hagar

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

I will start by drawing attention to two assumptions about Philosophy of Education. These two assumptions underpin the belief that Philosophy of Education is a subject worthy of study by beginning teachers. The assumptions are: (a) Philosophy of Education discovers and develops substantial and informative general principles and theories about education (hereafter the content assumption. (b) These general principles and theories are applied by teachers in order to help solve some of their professional problems (hereafter the application assumption). In this paper I mainly will be canvassing reasons for doubting both of these assumptions. Then I will briefly consider some …

The Establishment Of An Effective Communication System In Schools, Graeme Lock Jan 1989

The Establishment Of An Effective Communication System In Schools, Graeme Lock

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

One of the emerging trends in Australian education in recent years has been the increasing amount of interaction between schools and their communities. Such a trend is no better exemplified than in the establishment of school-based decision-making groups. The closer relationship which has begun to exist between schools and their communities necessitates an improvement in communication. As part of an investigation into increasing community participation in school decision-making processes, the issue of school community communication procedures was examined, and its importance ascertained. This article will suggest methods by which school-community communication can be improved and briefly outline the implications that …

Has Restructuring Left High School Teachers Professionally Stranded?, Rod Chadbourne, Rod Quin Jan 1989

Has Restructuring Left High School Teachers Professionally Stranded?, Rod Chadbourne, Rod Quin

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In February 1987 the 'Better Schools Report' was released in Western Australia. It provided the blueprint for a radical restructuring of the state education system based on the principles of administrative decentralization devolution of authority, and corporate management, The proposed changes were designed to make schools more self-determining, They were also intended to make the delivery of education more responsive, flexible, and accountable. To those ends, the Ministry of Education's central office was streamlined, the nine regional offices were replaced by twenty nine district offices, principals were given responsibility for recommending the permanency of all new teachers, and a process …

Attitudes Of Year 10 Boys And Girls Towards Coeducational Physical Education In A Metropolitan Senior High School, Teryl Heys

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare student attitudes towards coeducational physical education at a selected metropolitan government secondary school. The study examined differences in attitudes between 66 Year 10 girls and 51 Year 10 boys and ascertained whether this difference was significant. A sub-purpose of the study was to determine physical education teachers' perceptions of student attitudes toward coeducational physical education. This enabled a comparison to be made between the attitudes students expressed and the attitudes teachers perceived students to have. The investigation utilised a 16 item attitudinal questionnaire to establish whether students' attitudes were positive …

The Aesthetic Perceptions And Preferences Of Young Children For Visual Artworks, Jacqueline Kik Jan 1989

The Aesthetic Perceptions And Preferences Of Young Children For Visual Artworks, Jacqueline Kik

Theses : Honours

Literature dealing with aesthetics and young children indicates the importance of developing in children a degree of aesthetic sensitivity and an ability to respond aesthetically to both natural and man made objects. However, directions for developing young children's aesthetic awareness appear to be hampered by the lack of systematic research evidence on the aesthetic response capabilities which five to eight year old children display. Thus, provision of information that would assist art educators and Early Childhood teachers in the preparation of successful classroom experiences remains a priority in this area. The research study reported in this thesis investigated the aesthetic …

An Idea To Save Educational Theory, M. A. B. Degenhardt Jan 1989

An Idea To Save Educational Theory, M. A. B. Degenhardt

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The future looks gloomy for educational theory. The place of theory in the education of teachers and in deliberations on educational policy, is being speedily reduced. The number of persons employed to teach educational theory is declining and many of those who remain are having to teach adulterated or dubiously 'relevant' theory regarding which they can feel no real enthusiasm or honest commitment. It is possible that some areas of educational theory which have developed impressively over the last two or three decades will almost vanish. Already one can discern the unhappy consequences for practice. Thus a valuable contribution to …

Forms Of Knowledge, Teacher Education And The Manipulation Of Beliefs, Peter G. Woolcock Jan 1989

Forms Of Knowledge, Teacher Education And The Manipulation Of Beliefs, Peter G. Woolcock

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper I will argue that Hirst's idea of forms of knowledge has a vital contribution to make to the education of teachers. In his 1965 paper, 'School Education and the Nature of Knowledge' (Hirst, 1974), Hirst argued that there are seven distinct forms of knowledge, each with its own unique concepts, distinctive logical structure, testability against experience and unique methods of testing. These seven forms of knowledge were mathematics, the physical sciences, the human sciences, history, religion, literature and the fine arts, and philosophy and moral knowledge. My paper, however, is not an attempt to reinstate forms of …

The Level Of Visual Literacy In Post-Secondary Students, Julie Russell Jan 1989

The Level Of Visual Literacy In Post-Secondary Students, Julie Russell

Theses : Honours

In an education, the term visual literacy refers to the ability of a student to interpret or decode various forms of representation. A person who is literate is able to read and write text, while a visually literate person is able to decode visual an images, and to a lesser extent use these skills in the creation of artworks. Art syllabuses in Western Australia clearly state desired outcomes in the area of visual literacy, yet little is known about how effective these guide-lines have been in producing school leavers who are visually literate. The effectiveness of secondary an teaching strategies …

The Implementation Of Design Education In Lower Secondary School Industrial Arts Units, Rod Slater Jan 1989

The Implementation Of Design Education In Lower Secondary School Industrial Arts Units, Rod Slater

Theses : Honours

This study identifies 'if' and 'how' design education is incorporated in lower secondary school Industrial Arts units, and determines if teacher training and teachers' perceptions of certain issues, are influential in the use of design education. A stratified random sample (50 teachers in 25 schools) was taken from all government secondary schools in W.A. The participants were surveyed with a postal questionnaire, and a follow-up interview was conducted with a selection of the respondents. There was a return rate of 84%. Data analysis determined the frequency distribution for structured questions and organized the data for non structured items into groups …

The Evaluation Of Writing In Unit Curriculum English, David Sharp Jan 1989

The Evaluation Of Writing In Unit Curriculum English, David Sharp

Theses : Honours

The assessment and grading of writing in Unit Curriculum English plays a major role in the determination of a student's summative, and hence, public, letter grade. Through teachers' adherence to the assessment and grading procedures for writing in Unit curriculum English, the Ministry of Education lay claims on comparability and statewide standards. The claim warranted the investigation of the guidelines and procedures used. A review of literature on the evaluation of writing was conducted. In order that local application and relevance be possible, the holistic mode of evaluating writing was focused on. Problems were identified in the research concerning score …

An Analysis Of Teacher-Student Interaction In The Area Of Gender Equity Within Primary School Physical Education, Brian D. Owen Jan 1989

An Analysis Of Teacher-Student Interaction In The Area Of Gender Equity Within Primary School Physical Education, Brian D. Owen

Theses : Honours

The major purpose of this study is to examine sex role dependent and sex role independent teacher behaviour in sex integrated primary school physical education lessons, utilising a systematic behaviour observation instrument. Sex role dependent behaviour accepts or expects sex role stereotypic behaviour in males and females or discourages male and female behaviour that is non-stereotypic. Sex role independent behaviour encourages, accepts or expects female and male behaviour that is independent of sex role stereotypes. The study will allow the analysis of sex role stereotypic patterns of teacher behaviour to determine the extent to which equality of participation and interaction …

The purpose of the study was to illuminate the use and effectiveness of Algebra' Blocks in the teaching-learning process. Two year nine classes with similar mathematics levels were taught binomial expansions and trinomial factorisations. The experimental class was taught using Algebra Blocks whilst the untreated class acted as the control group. After eight lessons of instruction, both classes were tested on their understanding of both concepts. To provide qualitative data, three randomly chosen students from each class were interviewed on …

A Survey Of Computer Usage In Year 11 And 12 Accounting In Western Australian Secondary Government Schools, Grazyna Critch Jan 1989

A Survey Of Computer Usage In Year 11 And 12 Accounting In Western Australian Secondary Government Schools, Grazyna Critch

Theses : Honours

Computer technology has changed the process of accounting and as a result computer usage has become an essential skill for the accountant. Consequently, computer applications are advocated in the accounting curriculum, the vocational rationale verified by virtue of the fact that the accounting profession itself is calling for computer training as part of accounting education. Although there is widespread agreement about the need for computer usage within accounting education, there is often a dichotomy between the educational goal and its application in practice. This is because computer usage in accounting is not without problems; while there are many factors which …

Chaos Theory And Competency Based Teacher Education, Clive Chappell Jan 1989

Chaos Theory And Competency Based Teacher Education, Clive Chappell

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Central paradigms of modern science are being questioned by an emerging group of scientists called chaos theorists. They argue that the reductionist approach to analysing real systems in order to predict future behaviour of the system cannot succeed. They go further arguing that unpredictable dynamic systems when observed holistically reveal patterns which have the capacity to bring order to chaos. This paper suggests that the reductionist approach to investigation and the ideology of determinism has been absorbed by many other disciplines including education and that investigators in these disciplines need to re-assess their activities in the light of the work …

Political Education In Australia : 'Well-Being' For Youth, Harry C. J. Phillips Jan 1989

Political Education In Australia : 'Well-Being' For Youth, Harry C. J. Phillips

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Interest in political socialisation and education, and the agencies through which it occurs, can be traced back to the beginnings of political theory. Much of Plato's Republic was devoted to the proper training patterns of various 'classes' in his ideal state. He reasoned that if political socialisation or civic training was defective a political system would inevitably degenerate through timocracy, oligarchy, and democracy to tyranny (Phillips and Rielly, 1982, 24). Aristotle, as Plato's outstanding student, took it for granted that the legislator should make the political education of the young a major goal. To ensure the stability of the Constitution, …

Changing Societal And Familial Trends : Changing Teacher Strategies, Dawn Butterworth Jan 1989

Changing Societal And Familial Trends : Changing Teacher Strategies, Dawn Butterworth

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teachers today are working in an era of rapid and complex change. Not only must they be aware of these societal and familial changes, but they must also know how to respond to the changed needs of individual children within the context of their changing families and society. It is no longer appropriate for teachers to operate on the basis of out-of-date stereotypes depicted by texts and teachings which have been based on earlier life-styles and circumstances. Teacher education institutions must also play their part in ensuring that both pre and post-service teachers are kept abreast of these rapid societal …

An Examination Of The Reasons Why Parents Send Their Daughters To Specific, Independent, Non-Catholic Schools For Their Secondary Education In Western Australia, Lois A. Joll Jan 1989

An Examination Of The Reasons Why Parents Send Their Daughters To Specific, Independent, Non-Catholic Schools For Their Secondary Education In Western Australia, Lois A. Joll

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study examines the reasons why parents send their daughters to specific, independent, non-Catholic Schools for their secondary education in Perth, Western Australia. Initially, through a review of related literature, variables which might influence parental choice of a private school were identified. In order to establish the relevance of these variables, and to identify any other previously unidentified variables which may influence parental selection of a particular independent girls' school, a survey was undertaken of sample groups of parents whose daughters had entered Year 8 in 1989. Further data was obtained through interviews of a small number of parents from …

An Investigation Of Art Teachers' And Art Students' Perceptions Of An Art Gallery Visit, Eliza Leano Jan 1989

An Investigation Of Art Teachers' And Art Students' Perceptions Of An Art Gallery Visit, Eliza Leano

Theses : Honours

The literature on museum and art gallery visits by schools draws attention to the fact that schools and other educational institutions may perceive the art gallery as a place for learning and education whilst other groups in society do not. The literature also draws attention to internal and external factors related to the school and art gallery context which may contribute to the intended and unintended outcomes of art gallery visits by schools. To date, no research has been conducted into the effects of a single visit to the Art Gallery of Western Australia (ACWA) en secondary art students. Art …

Attitudes Towards Assessment In Art, Sheila Posner Jan 1989

Attitudes Towards Assessment In Art, Sheila Posner

Theses : Honours

Assessment in the field of Art Education has always been difficult. The subjective element has caused art to be considered a controversial subject in school as far as assessment is concerned. Different educators have argued for and against the necessity of assessment. The literature has shown that if art is to be taken seriously in school, it must be subjected to formal assessment. It was found that while there were studies about evaluation and assessment in art and studies about attitudes to art, little has been written on attitudes to art assessment. This research set out to examine the attitudes …

Strategies For Increasing Community Participation In School Decision-Making Processes, Graeme Lock Jan 1989

Strategies For Increasing Community Participation In School Decision-Making Processes, Graeme Lock

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The aim of this study is to develop, by a deductive approach, a framework of strategies which would assist school administrative teams to form a school-based decision making group. Specifically, the strategies are aimed to increasing the participation of non-school-based community members in decision–making processes. Three focusing themes - the need for an overall plan the availability of adequate time and the provision of sufficient financial resources - are used as the structure for the literature review. Within these themes a number of strategies are identified which are relevant to the purpose of this study. Using a deductive approach, these …
