And when opportunities for such learning are not immediately accessible, it may require going to the source - or having the source come to you. Addressing issues concerning minorities, cultural diversity and prejudice have been a primary focus of Residential Life in recent years. Second-year head coach Trish Roberts returns all five starters from a team that posted a 19-8 overall record, and cruised to the regular-season Seaboard Conference title. Roberts continued the winning tradition of one of the most successful women’s basketball programs in the East. Over the past five years, the Black Bears have compiled a 106-37 record.

After finishing the regular season with a 13-1 conference record, Maine dropped a 60-47 contest to Northeastern in the Seaboard Conference Tournament. It was the fourth time in the past five years that the Black Bears have fallen to the Huskies in post-season play. …

Rudy Keeling begins his second season with the Black Bears hoping his recruiting efforts will establish a foundation on which to build a successful basketball program at Maine. Last season, Keeling brought in three freshmen, each of whom conributed significantly at different times during the season. This season, Keeling welcomes five newcomers, expected to shore up some of the difficiencies from a 9-19 mark of last season. Last year, Maine remained among the nation's college hockey elite with the team's second consecutive 30-win season and its second straight NCAA final four appearance. The Black Bears finished with a 31-14 overall record, and claimed their first HOCKEY EAST Championship.

Maine finished the regular season with a 17 -9 record, earning a first-round bye in the playoffs. The Black Bears 3-2 overtime victory over Northeastern and a 5-4 win over regular-season first-place finisher Boston College gave Maine the HOCKEY EAST Championship. We must admit that times have changed, though not so much in the morals and personal standards of our students. Both research and common sense tell us that the standards of behavior set by parents for their children are not eroded by college life or other influences of the larger society. It's true, however, that today's students are much less embarrassed or otherwise restrained about discussing the once-unmentionable. Some may applaud this new openness and some may wince at it, but there's not much that university administrators can do to influence it.

In December 1987, President Dale Lick commissioned a Task Force on the Status of Women at the University of Maine. The Task Force submitted its report on June 1, 1988. Its findings and conclusions expressed serious concerns related to each area of its charge: (1) the distribution, retention, compensation, advancement, and representation of women at the University and (2) the organizational processes and climate affecting women at the University. The one hundred and four (104) recommendations suggested specific actions to address the concerns defined in the Task Force's findings.
