The Effect Of A Visual Perception Handwriting Program On The Acquisition Of Handwriting Skills, Joanna R. Jones

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

a combination of commercial handwriting programs used by the control group. Participating in the program were forty-eight first-grade students from a rural school in New Mexico. No significant difference resulted between the experimental handwriting program emphasizing visual perception and the control handwriting program with little emphasis on visual perception.

Teaching Map Concepts To Poor Readers, Cynthia J. Meadows Jan 1979

Teaching Map Concepts To Poor Readers, Cynthia J. Meadows

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a concern that children with poor, i.e., below grade level reading ability, have trouble in content area subjects. The subjects of social studies, science, and health are often taught in the elementary grades through the use of textbooks. Because these texts prior to 1979 were written with a readability level at or above the grade level for which the book was designed, the poorer reader cannot read, and therefore learn, the subject matter presented.

Children need knowledge of these content areas to function in today's society. They also need the ability to read to increase their knowledge and …

A Comparative Study Of Student Perceptions And Teacher Perceptions Of Classroom Practices In Advanced Ninth-Grade Biology, Evelyn C. Hart

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It would appear that examination of student and teacher perceptions of classroom practices might provide information useful in explaining the descrepancies among what teachers think they are doing and what the students see them doing, the achievement and attainment levels of the student, and the application of process oriented science and traditional textbook science. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to determine if a discrepancy exist between student and teacher perceptions of classroom practices in Duval County junior high schools. Specifically, this project attempted to answer the question: Do the perceptions of Advanced Ninth-Grade Biology students in Duval County …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Children's Gospel Principles Course, Lynn R. Applegate Jan 1979

The Development And Evaluation Of A Children's Gospel Principles Course, Lynn R. Applegate

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is the description, defense and critique of a course developed to teach gospel principles to 7- through 9-year-old children. The development process through which the course went, its formative evaluations and summative evaluation are described. The summative evaluation employed the pretest-posttest control group design. Thirty children, ages 7 through 9, were in the evaluation. After the pretest, 15 of the children were taught the 19-lesson course by their parents during a 23-day period. A statistical comparison of the mean pretest-posttest gain scores for the experimental group could significantly more accurately identify examples and non examples of fatih, agency, …

The Relationship Between Teacher Sex Role Models And Career Aspirations Of High School Industrial Arts Students, Janet Lynn Robb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Sex role stereotyping has been the focus of a number of research projects trying to determine just where stereotyping lies and ways to eliminate it. Although most of the research points toward role modeling as a major cause, little has been done to test that theory.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between teacher sex role models and the career aspirations of students enrolled in high school industrial arts courses throughout the United States. This study was limited to tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students enrolled in industrial arts programs in high schools in the United …

Fixed Versus Random Scheduling Of Classroom Activities In A Resource Room Setting, Joanne Marie Fegley Broadston Jan 1979

Fixed Versus Random Scheduling Of Classroom Activities In A Resource Room Setting, Joanne Marie Fegley Broadston

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been a dramatic upswing in the number of resource classrooms and students in the last decade. There has also been a lack of research regarding resource students in the resource setting. While teachers have assured that regular classroom practices or methods used with other specialized populations were also appropriate for this new kind of student and setting little research has been done to either support or reject these practices or methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect which assigning class takes in a fixed order, rather than a random order, had on the numbers …

Group Parent Training In Oregon, John Peter Kuzma Jan 1979

Group Parent Training In Oregon, John Peter Kuzma

Dissertations and Theses

Research examining the actual practice and methods of group parent trainers has not kept pace with the great amount of literature on "how-to-parent” theory. In this study, 23 group parent trainees throughout the Willamette Valley in Oregon were interviewed to determine the characteristics of their groups in terms of numbers of parents in each group, length of groups, fees charged, teaching methods used, parenting approaches taught. Their general concerns and opinions about the parent training field were also elicited.

The support aspects of the parent groups were recognized as integral to parent training's effectiveness. The organizational structure of the groups …

The Effects Of Perceptual And Piagetian Training On The Reading Achievement Of First Grade Pupils, James Clark Lane

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the effect of pairing cognitive training, developed from Piaget's theory, with perceptual training on reading achievement. Also investigated was the effect of cognitive and perceptual training by themselves, as well as that of a cont:col group on reading achievement. A second purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not perceptual errors would be reduced by pairing perceptual and cognitive training as opposed to perceptual, cognitive or control training alone.

The Relationship Of Language Orientation And Racial/Ethnic Attitude Among Chinese-American Primary Grade Children, Irene Sui-Ling Kwok

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study to determine whether there was a relationship between the language orientation of Chinese-American primary-grade children in the San Francisco Unified School District and their racial/ethnic attitude. Generally, Chinese-Americans are monolingual Chinese speakers (MCS), monolingual English speakers (BECS). These three linguistic groups of Chineses-American children were compared in this study to determine the existence of a language orientation-racial/ethnic attitude relationship. A review of the literature shows that 1) language, thought, and perception are interrelated, 2) racial attitudes are significant factors in American society, 3) attitudes and behavior are interrelated, and 4) children develop racial/ethnic attitudes at an early age. …

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

A self-administered questionnaire given to 526 postsecondary students and 424 employed university graduates provides data on the participation of Tanzanian women in higher education and in the work force. Research shows that Tanzanian women students are more likely than men to come from more developed regions, reside in urban areas, have relatively well-educated and highly paid parents in professional or administrative occupations, and be enrolled in courses that reflect stereotypical ideas of women's role. Though women initially earn as much as men, they wait longer for initial employment, and pay differentials between the sexes increase over time in favor of …

Schooling For Alienation: The Ethiopian Experience, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

Schooling For Alienation: The Ethiopian Experience, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Conducted with 1500 randomly selected Ethiopian twelfth grade students, this study explored reasons for student alienation in Ethiopia. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Findings indicated that students are more alienated when they perceive the school environment to be closed. Students who were more anxious about passing the highly selective Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination were more alienated than those less anxious, suggesting that this test is a cause of alienation. Students in institutions with lower prestige felt more alienated, reflecting perhaps their knowledge that students from such institutions have a smaller chance for later success. Finally, the most …
