Chapter 1: Piaget's Theory And College Teaching, C. A. Tomlinson-Keasey
Chapter 1: Piaget's Theory And College Teaching, C. A. Tomlinson-Keasey
ADAPT Program: Essays
The influence that Piaget's theory has had on the understanding of cognitive development is incalculable. One can look at the establishment of the Jean Piaget Society, the publication of literally hundreds of books that deal with Piagetian theory, and the dominance in professional journals of articles related to Piagetian theory as some indication of the immense impact that this theory has had on the study of the child's acquisition of knowledge.
It is, however. only very recently that college and university professors have looked toward Piagetian theory for relevant and practical suggestions about how to maximize college student learning.

Chapter 14: Evaluation Report Of The First Year Of The Adapt Program, C. A. Tomlinson-Keasey, V. Williams, D. Eisert
ADAPT Program: Essays
Evaluating the success of the ADAPT program seemed, at the outset, to be an extremely complex task. How does one assess a student’s growth in six different content areas over a year’s time? what are the hallmarks of progress which might signal the success or failure of the program? The first step of the evaluation was a clear enumeration of the goals of the program. In staff discussions it became clear that our primary goal was to encourage students to think critically and logically by devising a curriculum which required the students to actively participate in their learning and to …

Chapter 15: Second Year Evaluation Of The Adapt Program, C. A. Tomlinson-Keasey, D. Eisert
ADAPT Program: Essays
The purpose of the present paper is to evaluate the success of the ADAPT program in reaching its goals during the second year. As in the first year of the program, the primary goal was to encourage students to think critically and logically, Secondly, we were interested in providing successful learning experiences that would facilitate personal and social growth. Finally, we hoped that students who were being encouraged to explore a variety of content areas, would feel excitement in learning, and that this would be reflected in positive attitudes toward the whole university community. In short, our goals were to …

Chapter 16: A Sneak Preview Of Adapt's Third-Year Evaluation, David Moshman, Jacqueline Langley
ADAPT Program: Essays
The evaluation of the ADAPT program for the academic year 1977–78 will be based on pre- and post-test data for 19 ADAPT students and 24 control students on four measures—the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire, the Self Description Inventory, the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal, and a test of Formal Operational Reasoning—as well as an attitude questionnaire given to both groups at the end of the year. Detailed analyses of the results from both the ADAPT program and the other Piagetian programs described in this volume are currently being performed by Carol Tomlinson- Keasey, who is now at the University of California-Riverside. …

ADAPT Program: Essays
The ADAPT History course at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is still very much in its infancy. To date it has consisted of a two-semester course dealing with the nature of “revolution and other forms of change" in Modern Europe from 1776 to the present. The thematic tone of its title has been kept deliberately vague; its content has tended to stress the origin, development, and change of ideas, institutions, and value-structures within the established chronology, all of which one would likely find in the traditional “Western Civilization” course. The course has not attempted to present the study of man in …
Three Experimental Approaches To Teaching Reading In Content Fields To Preservice Secondary Education Students, Joan Luverne Paul
Three Experimental Approaches To Teaching Reading In Content Fields To Preservice Secondary Education Students, Joan Luverne Paul
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
The importance of reading a a process of learning subject matter emphasizes the responsibility teachers have in teaching that process to their students. The, raining of secondary teachers to meet that responsibility is a recent development for teacher preparatory institutions. Such training must be effective in training teachers who will implement sound teaching practices that include teaching reading as a process of learning.
To train such teachers, it is necessary that factors which affect their learning be identified, to ensure that the outcome of instruction will be teachers with the knowledge of and ability to teach reading in their respective …

Procedures For Setting Up A Remedial Reading Program In The Secondary Schools, Bradley Richardson
Procedures For Setting Up A Remedial Reading Program In The Secondary Schools, Bradley Richardson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The need for a more comprehensive education in the secondary school is a need which no one will deny; and as reading is the primary means through which most formal education takes place, the need for expert readers is ever-present. The tragedy of so many high school students graduating without having mastered the skill of reading reminds us that schools are not succeeding in its task of educating. One important area where secondary schools can improve their attempts at reaching the students who are passing through without learning is to set up a reading program designed to help those students …

Chapter 8: A Place For Philosophy In The Adapt Program, Elizabeth T. Carpenter
ADAPT Program: Essays
Although there are many ways in which the ADAPT program is importantly different from other educational programs in the United States at this mid-seventies time, surely it stands as impressive in higher education by being the only college program spanning six disciplines which seeks primarily to employ the genetic epistemology of Jean Piaget in diagnostic and teaching strategies. It stands as a testing ground for a revolutionary hypothesis about college-level education: the degree of effectiveness of a teaching strategy depends directly upon the logical ability of the individual learner and his place on the developmental continuum relative to the logical …
Chapter 10: Adapt Anthropology, Martin Q. Peterson
Chapter 10: Adapt Anthropology, Martin Q. Peterson
ADAPT Program: Essays
ADAPT Anthropology focuses on the discovery of various social “rules” that govern social relationships. These rules are investigated through a combination of observation and participation, a traditional method in anthropology. Students use the learning cycle paradigm, first exploring relationships between people and events, then inventing new combinations of these events as a means of informing the relationships, and finally applying what they have learned to a new set of events. In this essay, I shall consider three elements of my approach to Piagetian learning in anthropology. The first element is the successful use of the learning cycle paradigm. The second …
Chapter 11: Reading And Writing And Piaget, Robert D. Narveson
Chapter 11: Reading And Writing And Piaget, Robert D. Narveson
ADAPT Program: Essays
Like most English teachers I have been skeptical of schemes to reform the teaching of literature and composition. Our experience suggests that for the most part our successes are likely to result from the intangibles of personal styles, developed empirically through classroom practice. As Ross Winterowd has written, "One can only conclude that writing is far too difficult a skill to be taught—and yet we do teach it.” (1975, p.2) Nevertheless, I seized the opportunity to join the ADAPT Program because it seemed to offer a more thoroughly articulated theoretical basis for teaching and learning than I had previously experienced. …

A Comparative Analysis Of Mathematical Knowledge And Mathematical Attitude Between Urban And Suburban Elementary School Teachers., Jack Green Okech
Dissertations (Pre-2016)
The problem of this study was to investigate answers to these questions: (1) How do the performances of urban and suburban elementary teachers compare on the test of (a) mathematical competency, and (b) mathematical attitude? (2) Is there any relationship between mathematical attitude and competency scores? The research involved 186 urban and 166 suburban elementary school teachers employed by the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Data were collected through: (1) A personal data sheet completed by each participant to obtain background information. (2) A Revised Test for Elementary Mathematics Understandings (RTEMU) developed by Gibney, Ginther, and Pigge (1970) and then …

Instructional Role Of The Media Specialist, Patricia S. Adams
Graduate Research Papers
A study was made to investigate the number of elementary school media specialists part1e1pat1n.g 1n the instructional program. Additional problems of the study were to further investigate what instructional tasks were performed and what values were assigned to the instructional tasks in a total media program.
A survey instrument was distributed to one hundred fifteen Iowa elementary school media specialists in April, 1975. The instrument was used to assess the following, (1) if the recipient was an elementary media specialist employed full time in one attendance center; (2) if the recipient participated with the teaching staff in planning, designing, implementing, …
