The importance of reading a a process of learning subject matter emphasizes the responsibility teachers have in teaching that process to their students. The, raining of secondary teachers to meet that responsibility is a recent development for teacher preparatory institutions. Such training must be effective in training teachers who will implement sound teaching practices that include teaching reading as a process of learning.
To train such teachers, it is necessary that factors which affect their learning be identified, to ensure that the outcome of instruction will be teachers with the knowledge of and ability to teach reading in their respective …

The problem of this study was to investigate answers to these questions: (1) How do the performances of urban and suburban elementary teachers compare on the test of (a) mathematical competency, and (b) mathematical attitude? (2) Is there any relationship between mathematical attitude and competency scores? The research involved 186 urban and 166 suburban elementary school teachers employed by the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Data were collected through: (1) A personal data sheet completed by each participant to obtain background information. (2) A Revised Test for Elementary Mathematics Understandings (RTEMU) developed by Gibney, Ginther, and Pigge (1970) and then …

This project provides enrichment reading materials for the first grade child who is designated as gifted and is reading beyond the preprimer and primer levels at the beginning of the school year. The materials are divided into four areas; (1) word recognition, (2) comprehension, (3) vocabulary, and (4) study skills. In each of these areas, enrichment activities have been prepared with the most emphasis given to comprehension. Although originally designed to be used independently, the materials can be used as skill teaching devices. The difficulty of the materials varies; therefore, the materials have been sequenced according to difficulty.

This paper presents a program for teaching media/research skills by integrating them with study assignments in curricular areas developed by classroom teachers. It is planned to be carried out in the Instructional Resource Center with both the classroom teacher and the librarian present. Evaluation is provided for student diagnosis and program improvement. Recommendations include the adoption of this program for the Eastmont Middle School.

This project is the development of a curriculum of language packets in Spanish dealing with the communication concepts which are tested in the MAT-SEA-CAL Oral Language Proficiency Test. The packets develop one specific skill in each of the communication concepts: numerality, temporality, spatial relations, identification, classification, case relationships, interrogation, and negation. The packets are designed for native Spanish speakers, grades K-3, who have certain structural problems in oral Spanish.

This project, designed for content teachers wishing to improve their students' reading skills, includes lesson plans, procedures, and materials for learning modules in the following content field reading problem areas: readability, vocabulary, diagnosis, questioning, using the textbook, organizing for instruction, and notetaking and listening. The key recommendation was that the project be seen as an evolving process and not as an end product.

This project consists of three parts. Chapter 1 establishes the need for more concentrated teaching of poor readers among school children and suggests volunteer tutors as a possible source of help. Chapter 2 examines the history of tutoring by non-professionals and concludes that volunteers can indeed be effective tutors, but that appropriate training is a crucial factor. Chapter 3, the main part of the project, presents a set of ten training modules each consisting of taped instructions and accompanying printed material. The script for each tape is included in this paper.

It is suggested in this paper that Mastery Learning Units can be successful in encouraging the talented students to excel in their interests and capabilities. The intent of this paper is to show how enrichment activities and centers can be easily implemented in the biology curriculum by the use of Mastery Learning Units. In so doing, only one mastery unit is included for the purpose of demonstration. It is suggested that teachers write the units that they will be using for their students. The Organizzazione Rieducazione Tecnia in Rome, Italy offers English language instruction to Russian Jew refugees who for one reason or another wish to obtain visas to an English speaking country. The students are in a transitional phase in their lives; they have left their country of birth and haven't yet been accepted into another country of their choice. This creates special needs in regard to language acquisition. They need survival skills to help them make this transition and they need to gain an appreciation of English speaking cultures.

These materials provide a classroom tool for the teaching of English pronunciation through minimal pair contrast awareness. The work consists of illustrations representing the words that contain the contrasting sounds. There are six illustrations on each 18" x 24" chart, 54 charts in all.
