This paper presents a computer file of non-cataloged media for teaching Social Studies in the Franklin Pierce School District's elementary schools. The file is maintained by the use of a minicomputer database. Materials are drawn from the file by descriptors used to describe the contents of the item. The database file was used to enhance the teaching of Social Studies by first, saving the teachers time in locating materials, and second, helping point out other items they may not have known existed in the district.

This spelling book was designed to meet the needs and interests of secondary students who perform at the second and third grade level. The spelling book incorporates phonics, creative writing, reading and dictionary skills.

To provide for the unmet needs of the academically talented at Southgate Elementary School in Kennewick, Washington, a pull-out program was written and implemented through the library resource center. Research related to gifted/talented characteristics, identification and selection techniques, curriculum development, and teachers of the gifted was evaluated and applied to the program organization. Benefits of the program to students, parents, staff, and the cormnunity were numerous. Suggestions were made for application in other school settings using the developed guide as a resource.

"Centering on Marine Animals for Elementary School Children" was a multi-curricular learning center design in four parts. It consisted of an introduction on Bubbles the Whale, including a picture, a puppet, a song, a Sea Script, and task cards. Following the introduction were three units on Sea Monsters of the World, the Migration of the Grey Whale, and the Ecology of the Southern Sea Otter. Each unit contained a picture of the sea animal, a puppet, a song, a Sea Script, a Quiz, map(s), and task cards.

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a survey that would help classroom teachers identify the attitudes toward school of fifth grade students in a classroom of approximately thirty students.
The survey was developed from a list of statements suggested by fifth grade students. This list was categorized by a panel of judges to eliminate conflicting or confusing statements. One purpose of this paper was to investigate differences between gifted students' attitudes toward school according to assignment to self-contained or resource gifted classes. The other purpose was to investigate differences in knowledge of gifted and positive attitudes of the students' parents and school staff. The students' attitudes were measured using Hogan's Survey of School attitudes with local items added. No significant differences were found in attitudes toward reading/language arts, science, mathematics or social studies. The problem was to determine whether selected psycholinguistic instructional aids were effective in remediating learning deficiencies among early elementary children (grades 1-3). Literature was reviewed to substantiate a need for the use of psycholinguistic instructional aids for remediation of learning deficiencies among early elementary children. Research surveyed included auditory perception skills, language skills, motor skills, and visual perception skills. Data were collected from test groups of students in grade levels one, two, and three. A study has been made to select arts activities that will help enhance creativity. All children possess some amount of creative ability. Children, if encouraged, can develop this potential; if they are discouraged they tend to draw inward and thus their creativity is stifled. Ways for teachers to help increase and encourage creativity are discussed. Activities in the areas of art, music, and drama are presented in the project portion of this paper and will be used as a handbook for elementary teachers.

The purpose of this study was to determine if fifth grade students could be consistent and productive participants in the process of selecting books for a school library. Forty-six students completed a Reading Interest Inventory and participated in a book selection activity.

Chi-square test results did not support the hypothesis that there would be no significant difference between the results of these two selection activities. Student perceptions of their involvement in this process were also included.

The materials created introduce intermediate elementary level children to a selected basic energy vocabulary and to concepts of energy-environment inter-relations. The approach is multi-dimensional, employing a slide tape presentation, posters, charts, and vocabulary cards. Energy concepts and vocabulary are repeated through the various media forms as a means to reinforce learning. The content tone is deliberately positive so that in the process of gaining knowledge about energy issues, children will feel successful, encouraging further achievement in the area of energy education.

There have been many organizational plans, including the departmental, intended to improve the "self-contained classroom" so as to increase the child's intellectual development without hindering his personal-social development. It may be that one or more of the new plans will improve the self-contained classroom. Research evidence, not plain argument, must be relied upon to provide the answers needed. There is very little research evidence to support the claims for any elementary school plan, the self-contained classroom plan not excepted.
