Comparing Rural And Urban Primary Education In The Mekong Delta, Helen Behr Oct 2005

Comparing Rural And Urban Primary Education In The Mekong Delta, Helen Behr

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Over the course of one month I conducted a study of primary education in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. I compared rural and urban schools to determine what the differences were, how they are reflected in individual schools, and what effects these differences have on individual children. I visited and studied three schools in Can Tho City and three schools in rural communities outside of Can Tho. The differences expected were in enrollment, teacher qualifications, facilities, student motivation and ambition, and curriculum.

Data was compiled from classroom observations, interviews with principals and teachers, and surveys completed by students. Results indicate …

Finding A Sexual Dialogue With Children: A Dutch Model, Cassandra Baxter Oct 2005

Finding A Sexual Dialogue With Children: A Dutch Model, Cassandra Baxter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper investigates the ways in which Dutch children, under the age of 12, learn about sexuality. This is a holistic investigation of three different avenues of education that children receive; parents, schools, and organizations. Through a framework of developmental psychology, I examine how the methods of, and dominant theories behind, education reveal a larger cultural conception of childhood sexuality.

Through in-depth interviews, I spoke with one parent who lives in Amsterdam, one primary school teacher from the De Theo Thysen School in Amsterdam, two primary school sex educators from the Hulpverlening Gelderland Midden in Arnhem, and a representative from …

Aprender Sin Educación: El Aprendizaje, La Historia Personal Y El Contexto Comunitario En La Experiencia De La Universidad De La Tierra, Leah Oster-Katz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Work In Progress: The Wsu Model For Engineering Mathematics Education, Nathan W. Klingbeil, Richard Mercer, Kuldip S. Rattan, Michael L. Raymer, David B. Reynolds Oct 2005

Work In Progress: The Wsu Model For Engineering Mathematics Education, Nathan W. Klingbeil, Richard Mercer, Kuldip S. Rattan, Michael L. Raymer, David B. Reynolds

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper summarizes progress to date on the WSU model for engineering mathematics education, an NSF funded curriculum reform initiative at Wright State University. The WSU model seeks to increase student retention, motivation and success in engineering through application-driven, just-in-time engineering math instruction. The WSU approach involves the development of a novel freshman-level engineering mathematics course EGR 101, as well as a large-scale restructuring of the engineering curriculum. By removing traditional math prerequisites and moving core engineering courses earlier in the program, the WSU model shifts the traditional emphasis on math prerequisite requirements to an emphasis on engineering motivation for …

Manpower Planning And University Enrollments: The Debate In Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Y. C. Lim Oct 2005

Manpower Planning And University Enrollments: The Debate In Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Y. C. Lim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Faced with growing resource constraints, many countries are grappling with the issue of how best to allocate resources to publicly funded universities. Quite a few governments have used manpower planning models to guide policies regarding university enrollments and resource allocation. These models typically derive educational enrollments from projected manpower requirements based on forecasts of economic growth. Recent public debate on university admissions policy in Singapore raises anew the question of the effectiveness of the manpower planning model that Singapore (and many other countries) relies on to guide university intakes. The Singapore government is committed to giving its universities greater autonomy …

Technology And Teacher Preparation In Exemplary Institutions: 1994 To 2003, Mark J. Hofer Oct 2005

Technology And Teacher Preparation In Exemplary Institutions: 1994 To 2003, Mark J. Hofer

Articles

In a 1994 study commissioned by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Mergendoller, Johnston, Rockman, & Willis (1994) examined four exemplary institutions to identify their approaches to integrating technology into teacher education. A decade later, the field would benefit from a comparison of current approaches of infusing technology into teacher education to the 1994 findings. This study examines the approaches of the first seven teacher education programs to receive the ISTE NETS Distinguished Achievement Award. Current approaches to the process are outlined, including the identification of the key factors impacting their implementation. A comparison of the 1994 and the present …

Experiential Learning Process: Exploring Teaching And Learning Of Strategic Management Framework Through The Winter Survival Exercise, Maheshkumar P. Joshi, Elizabeth B. Davis, Ravi Kathuria, C. Ken Weidner Ii Oct 2005

Experiential Learning Process: Exploring Teaching And Learning Of Strategic Management Framework Through The Winter Survival Exercise, Maheshkumar P. Joshi, Elizabeth B. Davis, Ravi Kathuria, C. Ken Weidner Ii

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This article examines an attempt to introduce experiential learning methods in a business strategy course. In organizational behavior and industrial/organizational psychology, experiential teaching methods have been so widely adopted that some authors have suggested dropping the distinction between experiential and traditional teaching. Although intuitively appealing, experiential methods have not yet become popular among professors teaching strategy to traditional-age undergraduate students. It seems that heavy reliance on case-based teaching has resulted in a lack of emphasis on experiential learning tools for strategic management. In this study, the Winter Survival Exercise was used to introduce, concisely and effectively, the strategic management framework …

Personality And Programming, Amy B. Woszczynski, Tracy C. Guthrie, Sherri Shade

Faculty Articles

Information systems students continue to struggle to successfully complete computer programming classes. Learning how to program is difficult, and failure and attrition rates in college level programming classes remain at an unacceptably high rate. Since many IS students take a programming course as part of their program of study, IS educators should better understand why IS students tend to achieve low success rates in programming courses and what can be done to improve success rates. Little research to date has addressed potential reasons for student failure in programming principles courses. Many educators simply assume that high failure rates are acceptable …

Rating The Special Masters, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter Oct 2005

Rating The Special Masters, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

After the 85th General Assembly adjourned in April 2005, the Rogers School District, along with 48 other districts, filed a motion to the state Supreme Court to reopen the landmark Lake View school funding case, accusing the legislature of failing to increase school funding for the 2005-06 school year (see Policy Brief 17). The Supreme Court agreed and on June 9, 2005, reappointed former Justices Bradley D. Jesson and David Newbern as Special Masters to assess the plaintiffs’ claims. The Masters issued their report on October 3, 2005, concluding that “the state has not lived up to the promise made …

Naep 2005 Results, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as “the Nation’s Report Card,” is a national assessment of what students in each state know in various subjects. The Grade 4 and 8 mathematics and reading portions of the NAEP were administered in 2005 and the results were released in mid-October. This brief fact sheet highlights the recent NAEP results and demonstrates, simply put, that the state’s students are gaining ground on the nation according to the NAEP.

A First Look At The Impacts Of District And School Consolidation, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter Oct 2005

A First Look At The Impacts Of District And School Consolidation, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

For over two decades, the “fairness” of Arkansas’ educational system has been assessed by the courts. The 2002 Lake View ruling by the Arkansas Supreme Court required the state to “adequately and equitably” fund the education system. Since the Supreme Court’s decision, state policymakers and education officials have worked to rectify problems highlighted in the Lake View case. Perhaps the most controversial plan was to consolidate several of Arkansas’ school districts.

Superintendents Speak Out On Education Reforms, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter Oct 2005

Superintendents Speak Out On Education Reforms, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

In an effort to improve educational opportunities for all students, Arkansas has made education reforms in many areas over the past three years. The Office for Education Policy (OEP) recently distributed a confidential survey to superintendents across the state to see what kinds of successes districts are having as a result of these reforms and what challenges they still face. OEP also asked superintendents about teacher quality and supply issues in their districts, particularly in light of No Child Left Behind’s (NCLB) requirement that all schools be staffed with “highly-qualified teachers.”

Vertices Of Self-Similar Tiles, Da-Wen Deng, Sze-Man Ngai Oct 2005

Vertices Of Self-Similar Tiles, Da-Wen Deng, Sze-Man Ngai

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

The set Vn of n-vertices of a tile T in \Rd is the common intersection of T with at least n of its neighbors in a tiling determined by T. Motivated by the recent interest in the topological structure as well as the associated canonical number systems of self-similar tiles, we study the structure of Vn for general and strictly self-similar tiles. We show that if T is a general self-similar tile in \R2 whose interior consists of finitely many components, then any tile in any self-similar tiling generated by T has a finite …
