Codebook: The Lsay 1995 Year 9 Sample Wave 1 (1995) Technical Paper No. 9, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer) Feb 1997

Codebook: The Lsay 1995 Year 9 Sample Wave 1 (1995) Technical Paper No. 9, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

LSAY Technical Reports

The surveys focus on the education and labour market experiences of groups of young Australians, beginning from their middle years of secondary schooling. Data collected include basic demographic variables, as well as information about educational and labour force participation and experiences extending over a number of years. The present form of the LSAY program commenced in 1995 with a national sample of Year 9 students. The program also brings together earlier longitudinal studies conducted by ACER under the Youth in Transition (YIT) program, and by the Commonwealth under the Australian Longitudinal Survey (ALS) and Australian Youth Survey (AYS) programs. The …

An Analysis Of Native And Transfer Characteristics As Expressed In 1995 Cirp Survey Findings, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Though this report will deal mostly with the differences between transfers and native freshmen, their most important similarity should be mentioned first: both cohorts were new to Western; both were expected to confront unfamiliar surroundings and experiences. This basic fact is, from an administrative point of view, also one of extreme importance. The primary reason for the development of the Transitions program and for the continuing use of summer and freshmen orientation programs was to improve the University's efficiency. Numerous assessment reports have indicated that there can never be too much advising. Findings support what common sense would intuit: the …

Wwu Library Survey Series, Fall 1996-97 Staff And Administration, Carl Simpson, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

INTRODUCTION At the request of the new University Librarian, Western's Office of Survey Research and Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing worked with the Library's faculty and staff to conduct a series of surveys focusing on library resources and services. These surveys were intended to provide a base of information to help guide an in-depth assessment and planning effort aimed at improving Western's library. During Fall quarter, surveys were conducted of faculty, administration/staff, returning undergraduates with more than 120 credits, returning graduate students, newly entering undergraduate and graduate students, the library faculty and staff, and community library users. Repositioning Ourselves In The Contact Zone, Phyllis E. Vanslyck Feb 1997

Repositioning Ourselves In The Contact Zone, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

Publications and Research

This essay investigates ways students respond to cultural differences and cultural conflicts presented in literary texts and considers effective pedagogical strategies for dealing with such issues in the classroom. How can we encourage an exploration of cultural issues that texts embody and critique in a way that encourages an understanding of ways values are culturally constructed?

When Portfolios Become Part Of The Grading Process: A Case Study In A Junior High Setting, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson, Carmen Dykema, Randy Lloyd Feb 1997

When Portfolios Become Part Of The Grading Process: A Case Study In A Junior High Setting, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson, Carmen Dykema, Randy Lloyd

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Formal assessments have long served as our society's most privileged indices of student learning and school accountability. Hence, both learning and school effectiveness have often been equated with standardized test scores and/or grades. The privilege accorded to external assessment has tended to minimize the role of teachers and, even more dramatically, students in the assessment process. Assessments are external tools that are administered to teachers and students. For teachers, this often leads to a tension between their curricular goals and the assessment measures they must use in the classroom (Mitchell, 1992; Pearson, DeStefano, & Garcia, in press). Students are rarely …
