The Myth Of The Universal Adult Educator: A Literature Review., Angela Humphrey Brown

Adult Education Research Conference

This paper critically evaluates the adult education literature with respect to how it deals with the race and the gender of the teachers as a factor in the teaching-learning environment. The mainstream literature perpetuates the myth of the universal teacher while the narratives of African American women transcend the myth.

Narratives Of Women's Sexual Identity Development: A Collaborative Inquiry With Implications For Rewriting Transformative Learning Theory., Ann K. Brooks, Kathleen Edwards Jun 1997

Narratives Of Women's Sexual Identity Development: A Collaborative Inquiry With Implications For Rewriting Transformative Learning Theory., Ann K. Brooks, Kathleen Edwards

Adult Education Research Conference

Transformative learning theory has attended primarily to cognition and our capacity to understand experience in terms of increasingly inclusive, discriminating, permeable, and integrative perspectives (Mezirow, 1991). However, it does not allow for an understanding of the intersubjective nature of meaning-making, nor does it address the workings of oppression or how learning occurs in relation to oppression. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to rewrite transformative learning to allow us to theorize the integration of the individual with the socio-historical and to enable the understanding of the relationship between individuals and social change.

Ethnic And Language Identity Among A Select Group Of Vietnamese-Americans In Portland Oregon, Jay Owen Peterson Jun 1997

Ethnic And Language Identity Among A Select Group Of Vietnamese-Americans In Portland Oregon, Jay Owen Peterson

Dissertations and Theses

Vietnamese immigrants within the United States have demonstrated a strong desire to retain their ethnocultural identity. They have also experienced tremendous pressure to use English. What are the implications of these two trends for identity and language choice within the Vietnamese-American community? The presented research used multidimensional scaling (MDS) methods to describe the subjects' ethnic and language identities. The population for the study consisted of adult Vietnamese-Americans who were born in Vietnam and were currently living in the US. The study had two stages. First, identity labels were generated using a modified Twenty Statements Test. A "Myself' label was added …

Esl Cd-Rom Principles And Their Application: A Software Evaluation, Stephanie Burgi Lamonica Jun 1997

Esl Cd-Rom Principles And Their Application: A Software Evaluation, Stephanie Burgi Lamonica

Dissertations and Theses

CD-ROM applications within the past 5 years have aided the availability of Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) on a mass consumer level. This study assesses how the instructional design of commercial CALL English as a Second Language (ESL) CD-ROM materials make up for the lack of a human instructional component. The framework within which the evaluation takes place is communicatively based. Using a tool developed specifically for the study, 8 software from 6 companies were systematically evaluated. The 3-step process followed in the evaluation makes concessions for student, instructional designer, and instructor needs. Research questions address how the areas of …

Theoretical Perspectives On Preventing Fishing Vessel Accidents., Roger Boshier Jun 1997

Theoretical Perspectives On Preventing Fishing Vessel Accidents., Roger Boshier

Adult Education Research Conference

Despite the availability of new technologies, fishing vessels come to grief far too often. Prevention education is excessively functionalist and not sufficiently focused on human factors. The author interrogates the problem from contrasting theoretical perspectives and claims prevention educators should embrace subjective as well as objectivist ontologies and place power relations at the centre, not on the margins, of their efforts.

A Structured Approach To Training And Development Programs For Business And Organizational Leaders, Thomas M. Burns Jun 1997

A Structured Approach To Training And Development Programs For Business And Organizational Leaders, Thomas M. Burns

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This paper addresses and integrates two issues. Its first premise is that training and development programs in most organizations are often poorly planned or randomly implemented, a condition which undermines much of the potential benefit these programs may offer. Secondly, the paper argues that the development and application of critical and creative thinking skills, traditionally applied only in educational settings, can also serve businesses in very important ways. Towards the integration of these two issues, a six-stage model is presented that can serve to coordinate the process of personnel development in organizations. It is highlighted by the identification and application …

Attitude About Engineering Survey, Fall 1995 And 1996: A Study Of Confidence By Gender, Hugh Fuller, Susan C. Grant, Kristine C. Lawyer, Richard L. Porter, Sarah A. Rajala Jun 1997

Attitude About Engineering Survey, Fall 1995 And 1996: A Study Of Confidence By Gender, Hugh Fuller, Susan C. Grant, Kristine C. Lawyer, Richard L. Porter, Sarah A. Rajala

Sarah A. Rajala

One of the primary goals of the North Carolina State University College of Engineering (COE) is to enroll the best undergraduate students possible. One factor hampering the achievement of this goal is the lack of interest of many female high school students in the traditionally male-dominated field of engineering. With no special recruiting activities aimed at informing young women about the field of engineering and recruiting them to our campus, the results are not surprising: even though women represent forty percent of the undergraduate enrollment at the University, they represent just under twenty percent in the COE. In order to …

Relevant Design Experiences For Agricultural And Biosystems Engineers: Team Focus Through Competition, D. Raj Raman, Ronald E. Yoder Jun 1997

Relevant Design Experiences For Agricultural And Biosystems Engineers: Team Focus Through Competition, D. Raj Raman, Ronald E. Yoder

D. Raj Raman

The multitude of specializations within biosystems engineering makes traditional capstone design courses, which typically focus on a single topic, less relevant. In our department, our year-long capstone design experience involves machine component design. While this experience is useful to students in all concentrations, ideally, students concentrating on biological-, food-, and soil and water-engineering will have a capstone design experience that integrates their unique technical capabilities. New capstone courses should also enhance the broader skills of undergraduate engineers, including teamwork, time and resource management, oral and written communication, and integrated computer skills. However, a variety of issues militate against simply adding …

The Evolution Of An Introductory Biological Engineering Course: Design Is The Endpoint!, D. Raj Raman Jun 1997

The Evolution Of An Introductory Biological Engineering Course: Design Is The Endpoint!, D. Raj Raman

D. Raj Raman

Four the past four years, I have taught the sophomore level course, Agricultural Engineering 243 Material and Energy Flows in Biological Systems each spring semester. During the first offering, I used the lecture method to transmit information, and homework assignments and exams to reinforce skills and test comprehension. The greatest weakness of this technique seemed the lack of hands-on experience which I gave my students, and their subsequent lack of physical intuition. Enhancing their physical intuition drove the first curricular revision—using in-class demonstrations and simulations of key physical and biological processes. This technique did not work as well as expected, …
