C. William Pollard Papers
Speaking at Romania's Emanuel University, Pollard reflects on what it takes to be a successful board of trustees. In particular, he notes that in order to effectively set the moral tone of the organization the board must understand itself as a steward of what is in fact God's property.
Disruptive Innovation In The Classroom, Singapore Management University
Disruptive Innovation In The Classroom, Singapore Management University
Perspectives@SMU
Disruptive innovation, as described on the website of the man who coined the term, Clayton Christensen, is "a process by which a product or service takes root initially in simple applications at the bottom of a market and then relentlessly moves up market, eventually displacing established competitors". Prominent examples include how the personal computer (disruptor) displaced the mainframe computer (disruptee), cellular phones displacing fixed line telephony, and community colleges eating into the market share of four-year colleges.

Relating Training To Job Satisfaction: A Survey Of Online Faculty Members, Brian Hoekstra
Relating Training To Job Satisfaction: A Survey Of Online Faculty Members, Brian Hoekstra
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
As the online education market continues to mature, institutions of higher education will respond to student demand by employing quality faculty members. Faculty members need unique training to successfully teach online. While the effect of training on job satisfaction has been investigated in the realm of business, it has not been tested extensively in the realm of online higher education. A convenience sample of 497 Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC) faculty members was invited to participate, and 148 responded. A quantitative study utilizing regression analysis investigated the relationship between the training methodology of online course module completion and job …

Want To Enroll In A Mooc? No Thanks, My Professors Have Their Own Videos, Enda Mcgovern, Arne Baruca
WCBT Faculty Publications
Purpose: The paper explores how professors, in adopting short digital video lectures as a complementary teaching platform outside the classroom, could better enhance the learning experience for digital natives, i.e. millennial students, in challenging the growth of massive open online courses (MOOC). Specifically, the use of personalized, class-specific, video content made available on YouTube, in which the professor-of-record appears, is examined as a complementary learning platform for students required to read textbook material in preparation for class discussions.
Method / Design and Sample: Students were required to view class-specific digital videos on YouTube and thereafter complete a questionnaire to examine …

The Hidden Stem Economy: The Surprising Diversity Of Jobs Requiring Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Knowledge, Jonathan Rothwell
The Hidden Stem Economy: The Surprising Diversity Of Jobs Requiring Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Knowledge, Jonathan Rothwell
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Policy and businesses leaders have argued that there is a shortage of highly educated workers in professional occupations related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Critics have countered that Ph.D scientists often face a difficult academic labor market and do not necessarily earn higher wages than other professionals. Yet, both sides of the STEM debate have been relying on an ill-defined definition of STEM work. Using a detailed survey of worker knowledge requirements, this research project redefines STEM jobs based on the level of knowledge required in STEM fields to perform occupations. The results uncover two facts previously unrecognized …

Awesome Responsibility Of Leadership (Newport, Va), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Speaking at Christopher Newport University (Newport, VA), Pollard outlines his vision of leadership, arguing that the exercise of true leadership can never be divorced from questions of faith. This is because leadership is fundamentally about character development. When exercised in a servant-like manner it has the ability to create an organization that is as much a moral community as it is a profit-oriented institution.

Education Par Excellence: Developing Personal Competencies And Character Through Philanthropy-Based Education, Shirine L. Mafi, Marsha Huber
Business, Accounting and Economics Faculty Scholarship
This teaching note presents an innovation in accounting education called the Philanthropy Project. The Philanthropy Project emphasizes experiential learning and is designed to promote the learning of discipline-specific concepts while simultaneously addressing the social needs of the surrounding community. In the Philanthropy Project, students receive money to distribute to not-for-profit organizations (NFPs) based on a competitive proposal process they help to develop and administer. A distinguishing characteristic of this project is that it is not a simulation. Students make real decisions that have immediate consequences to certain groups of people in their own communities. They have to make …
