A Survey Of The Attitudes Of Selected Counselors, Administrators, And Students In California Toward The Utilization Of Computers And A Computer-Based Career Information System, Jimmy B. Stubblefield

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

At least 45 states have or are developing statewide computer-based career information systems. Super, McKinlay, Norris and others have speculated that school counselors hold negative attitudes toward the use of computers. But no study was found exploring the presence, extent or nature of this supposed resistance . This study investigated attitudes of selected counselors, students, and pupil personnel administrators toward the utilization of computers and a computer-based career information system in career counseling. Computer-based systems for both career information and guidance work were reviewed as to operation and classification, historical perspectives, evaluation studies, and probable future use and potential.

Procedures. CPGA's list of names of 839 School Counselors was used to survey the attitude toward the feminist aims. A Study Of Catharsis (Abreaction, Emotional Discharge), In 4th, 5th, And 6th Grade Students, Drina Miriam Fried-Roberts

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Catharsis is becoming more widely talked about as a method to get rid of negative emotions, to gain increased achievement, social maturity, and emotional well being. The emphasis on affective education is one example. There have been few controlled studies testing the catharsis hypothesis directly. No formal research is available that uses (randomly chosen) young people as subjects in studying emotional discharge.

Purpose. The purpose of the study is to see whether elementary school students can accept training in this re-evaluation counseling mental health model. Comparisons of those who hear about the model are made with those who hear …

Teacher Evaluation Process In Evangelical Christian Schools, John Alvin Farris Jan 1983

Teacher Evaluation Process In Evangelical Christian Schools, John Alvin Farris

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The difficulty in developing an effective program of teacher evaluation is seen in the literature as stemming from the administrators' and teachers' different perspectives of evaluation. In this tenor the problem investigated four facets of an evaluation process: the need, purpose, procedure, and result of a teacher evaluation program found in evangelical Christian schools. The purpose was fourfold: To compare the responses of the experienced, Christian day-school teacher to those of the administrator of the Christian day-school as to the (1) need, (2) purpose, (3) procedure, and (4) result of an evaluation process found in their schools. The study was …

A History Of The Big Trees And Avery School Districts, 1881-1940, David E. Gano

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The history of a school district is usually presented as a local history. This type of history is very thorough in naming names, locating sites, and explaining events as they affected the local scene. History does not occur in a vacuum, and often the explanation for certain behaviors or events lies beyond the local phenomena. It is the intention of this study to present the history of the Big Trees and Avery School Districts within a larger context of national forces which were also at work and sometimes, dominated the events. It is hoped that the effort to bring education …

The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino Jan 1983

The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Problem: While middle class students can succeed in L2 immersion programs, there is growing evidence that language minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds do better in Ll programs. Jim Cummins' linguistic interdependency hypothesis resolves this apparent paradox by proposing that middle class students enter school with cognitive academic language proficiencies (CALF), which allow them to succeed in language mismatch situations. He claims that CALF is best developed in Ll and that schools should_teach language minority students in their first language. This study attempted to test the validity of Cummins' CALF construct. It also investigated the effects of Ll and …

Every child has the right to full and free opportunity to explore and develop his capacities in the field of music in such ways as may bring him happiness and a sense of well-being.

It is impossible to deal with all aspects of elementary music education in a single presentation; consequently, this thesis is directed toward a specific need in a particular school district, namely the Vallecito Union School District. …

The Effect Of Physical Fitness Training On Academic Performance, Annette M. Butler Jan 1982

The Effect Of Physical Fitness Training On Academic Performance, Annette M. Butler

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In elderly psychiatric individuals, physical fitness training has been related to improved cognitive performance on several scales (Powell, 1974; Stamford, Hambacher, & Fallica, 1974). The results with normal adults and children, however, are not clear (Folkins & Sime, 1981). The purpose of the present study was to test the effects of cardiovascular fitness traini~g on cognitive functioning, relevant to academic performance, in college students. The following measures were used: Shipley- Institute of Living Scale, Rotter's Internal-External Control of Reinforcement Scale, a Student Learning Styles / Questionnaire, self~report data indicating hours spent studying, quality of studies, and mental alertness during daily …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

PROBLEM: Teaching limited English proficient pupils to read English is a primary concern of teachers in the United States. The problem educators face is how to accomplish the goal effectively. The emphasis on acquisition of oral fluency of English and quick introduction to reading has had mixed results. The controlled studies testing the hypotheses of primary language approaches are scarce.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine achievement test results of bilingual Spanish/English third and fifth grade students who were taught to read: 1) initially in the primary language and then English, 2) were taught to read English …

A Comparative Study Of Three Methods For Raising Self-Esteem Among The Elderly, Laila Gitelle Melin Davidson Jan 1982

A Comparative Study Of Three Methods For Raising Self-Esteem Among The Elderly, Laila Gitelle Melin Davidson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The self-concept of elderly people as a group is generally considered low. Self-concept is negatively influenced by an external source, i.e., cultural regard, and by the internal or personal adaptive changes of the aging process. To age successfully, positive or high concept of self is considered necessary. The literature indicates that self-concept can be changed. This study tested whether involvement in one of three educational processes (class groups) was effective in raising the self-esteem of the elderly participants. The class groups were (1) Current-Events or Job-Preparation, (2) Psychology, and (3) Memory and Relaxation Techniques. A fourth group, not in an …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The literature sees community members of Mexican ancestry as persons who are denied full participation in matters of school policies and practices. It also cites that forty percent of children of Mexican ancestry who enter school drop out before they graduate from the twelfth grade. In view of these perceptions, this study was designed to examine what relationship existed among three factors: (1) the goals of a school district; (2) student academic achievement as indicated by GPA; and (3) the intra- group variability among Chicano, Mexican American and Mexican students.

This study assumed that if students, parents and teachers prioritized …

The Field-Dependence-Independence (FDI) cognitive style refers to the relative ability of an individual to perceive elements as discrete from an overall organization. It is most commonly measured by the Portable-Rod-and-Frame Test (PRFT) and the children's Embedded Figure Test (CEFT). This study also compared PRFT and CEFT scores among the three ethnic groups and between the boys and girls. The sample for the study consisted of 90 fourth- and fifth-graders with equal numbers …
