The Hilmar Unified School District came into existence on July 1st, 1950, after three years of meetings by local patrons and County Committees, with final approval by the regional and State Commissions, as provided for in Chapter 16 of the Education Code. It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine the contributions which the use of recorded music may make toward the fulfillment of the objectives of elementary school music education; (2) to determine the directions of musical growth to be fostered through, and some valid teaching principles relative to music listening activities in the elementary school classroom; (3) to make suggestions as to the teaching techniques and the organization of the selected recorded materials which may assist the classroom teacher in promoting a climate favorable to the development of maximum musical growth in each student.

The problem which has been chosen as the basis for this study is the training of the school drum major and a critical analysis of the methods and published materials to aid in this training. There are many aspects to the recruitment and training of a school band that are not in the province of the drum major. This is a study intended to determine i f there are any significant differences in scholastic attainment between athletes and non-athletes at Modesto High School. The eight semester grades of the male graduates for the years 1945-1949 were studied, and only those graduates who attended Modesto High School for four years were considered. Raw differences in grades attained are shown as well as the differences apparent in comparing members of the two groups with like abilities as indicated by intelligence test scores.
