Rule Making Pre-K, Regents' Center For Early Developmental Education
Rule Making Pre-K, Regents' Center For Early Developmental Education
Open Educational Resources
Physical science centers provide children with opportunities for active, hands-on learning. This can sometimes result in problems that need to be addressed in order for the center to run smoothly. Bringing the children together to create the rules for the classroom or for specific learning centers is an excellent way to promote collaboration, community building, and perspective taking. This activity also provides a rich opportunity to model and build on a variety of literacy skills.

Preservice Elementary Teachers Create Mathematical Mystery Object Boxes To Review And Teach Numeration, Algebra, Geometry, And Measurement, Audrey C. Rule, E. Grueniger, D. Hingre, K. Mckenna, Rov C. Williams
Preservice Elementary Teachers Create Mathematical Mystery Object Boxes To Review And Teach Numeration, Algebra, Geometry, And Measurement, Audrey C. Rule, E. Grueniger, D. Hingre, K. Mckenna, Rov C. Williams
Open Educational Resources
A study was conducted with forty-seven preservice childhood (elementary) education teachers (42 F, 5 M) enrolled in two mathematics methods classes taught by the same instructor to determine the effect of these college students making curriculum materials appropriate for upper elementary students on the preservice teachers' knowledge of numeration, algebra, geometry, and measurement. A Mathematical Mystery Object Box is a box containing a set of objects with corresponding clue cards. The student reads the mathematical clues addressing numeration, algebra, geometry, and measurement and attempts to locate the object that satisfies them, checking work with the picture of the correct object …
Preservice Elementary Teachers Use Drawings And Make Sets Of Materials To Explain Multiplication And Division By Fractions, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan
Preservice Elementary Teachers Use Drawings And Make Sets Of Materials To Explain Multiplication And Division By Fractions, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan
Open Educational Resources
Background: Multiplication and division by fractions are among the most troublesome concepts in the elementary mathematics curriculum. Recent studies have shown that preservice elementary teachers in the United States do not have deep understandings of these concepts. Effective ways to improve preservice teachers' conceptual understanding of these concepts need to be identified. Citation: Rule, A. C., & Hallagan, J., editors. (2006). Preservice elementary teachers use drawings and make sets of materials to explain multiplication and division by fractions. A research study presented at the 2nd Annual Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers (PMET) Conference at Oswego, New York, June 6, 2006. …

Sixty poems focusing on elementary mathematics topics such as matching, classification, sequencing, counting, addition, subtraction, place value, decimals, multiplication, division, fractions, estimation, probability, patterns, shapes, symmetry, triangles, circles, polygons, angles, Venn diagrams, bar graphs, money, time, and measurement, are presented in this document. Poems display a variety of formats including acrostic, haiku, limerick, and rhyming verse. Each contains mathematical facts about the topic. Preservice teachers enrolled in .a mathematics education course wrote the majority of poems. Poems may be used in a enrich elementary student learning and as models for other preservice teachers who may use poetry writing to review, …

Environmental Print Activities For Teaching Mathematics And Content Areas, Audrey C. Rule, S. Mcintyre, M. J. Ranous
Open Educational Resources
Twenty-three mathematics activities that use environmental print materials are presented, along with two activities that focus on music education, one that highlights history concepts, and five science activities. The environmental print materials are words and images cut from food or other product packaging and mounted on mat board cards. Instructions for teachers regarding material preparation are given, along with directions for students to engage in each activity. Example layouts and labels for materials boxes are given for each activity. Mathematical topics include: more and less; numeration; addition and subtraction; time words; forming patterns; writing equations; story problems; chart coordinates; percents; …
Activities For Differentiated Instruction Addressing All Levels Of Bloom's Taxonomy And Eight Multiple Intelligences, Audrey C. Rule, L. H. Lord
Activities For Differentiated Instruction Addressing All Levels Of Bloom's Taxonomy And Eight Multiple Intelligences, Audrey C. Rule, L. H. Lord
Open Educational Resources
This manuscript contains 13 curriculum units designed to enhance differentiated instruction for learners with special needs from grades 1-12, including gifted students. It integrates Benjamin S. Bloom's levels of cognitive understanding with Howard Gardner's eight domains of intelligence to provide a framework for individualized instruction. Each unit has activities for the eight multiple intelligences (logical-mathematical intelligence, linguistic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, spatial intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and naturalistic intelligence) at each of Bloom's taxonomic levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The manuscript begins by explaining Bloom's and Gardner's contributions to educational research in the area of …
