Classroom Implementation Of Cooperative Learning: Qualitative Case Studies Of Three Early Elementary Teachers, W. Philip Bassett Jan 1991

Classroom Implementation Of Cooperative Learning: Qualitative Case Studies Of Three Early Elementary Teachers, W. Philip Bassett

Dissertations

This study uses qualitative methodology to look at the implementation of cooperative learning in three early elementary classrooms. The questions of interest were "What, from a teacher's point of view, happens when cooperative learning methods are implemented?" and "What happens to a cooperative learning model when it is implemented by trained teachers?"

A review of the literature related to cooperative learning identifies three genres of cooperative learning and proposes a theoretical framework. A review of the literature related to qualitative research defines qualitative research in terms of philosophy, perspectives, applications to educational research, and data gathering and analysis techniques. A …

The Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product For The Training Of Seventh-Day Adventist Literature Evangelists, Randy C. Horning

Dissertations

Problem. This study addressed the training needs of SDA literature evangelists through an empirically developed curriculum.

Method. The instructional product development method of Baker and Schutz (1971) served as the basis for this research. After the need for the product was established, a series of behavioral objectives was written. Additionally, a study of training literature was reviewed for methods to increase the effectiveness of the training seminar. The curriculum was presented in the form of a …

A Study Of Issues And Problems Women Face In Attempting To Pursue Careers In Educational Administration In Kenya, Bertha Kirigo Mutai Jan 1991

A Study Of Issues And Problems Women Face In Attempting To Pursue Careers In Educational Administration In Kenya, Bertha Kirigo Mutai

Dissertations

Problem

In Kenya, the majority of women in education occupy classroom teaching positions. Educational officers, in their hiring practices, appear to overlook women as resources, thereby depriving the schools of the skills and talents of potentially capable leaders. Students are also denied the role models of female leaders. This study investigates how difficult it is for women to secure professional careers in educational administration in Kenya.

Method

The population consisted of all the female teachers employed by the Ministry of Education in Kenya, and female Kenyan students in North American universities. A questionnaire was used to collect data from the …

Teacher Change And A Direct Instruction Reading Approach : A Multiple-Case Study, Shirley Ann Freed

Dissertations

Problem. Using a qualitative research design this study documented the process of change experienced by four elementary teachers as they learned a direct instruction reading approach. The literature reveals that teacher implementation is affected by psychological state, school climate, and conceptual level; however, the goal of this study was to examine the effects of cognition and working conditions.

Method. The author was involved as a participant-observer with 20 volunteer teachers as they attended a three-week intensive training session which involved presentation of theory, demonstrations, practice, and feedback. In the school year immediately following the training, nine teachers implemented the ECRI …

A Descriptive Study Of Teacher, School, And Training Characteristics In The Implementation Of The Cooperative And Inductive Teaching Models, Samuel M. Gaikwad Jan 1991

A Descriptive Study Of Teacher, School, And Training Characteristics In The Implementation Of The Cooperative And Inductive Teaching Models, Samuel M. Gaikwad

Dissertations

Problem

Much of what is known concerning implementation of innovation in schools is dependent on personal characteristics of teachers and principals, and school characteristics. Few studies have focused on study group (groups of 3-6 teachers and principals) activities and principals' active participation in the implementation processes. The purpose of this study was to describe the training session and bring to light some factors that would help teachers, who have gone through an intensive and well organized training session in the cooperative and inductive models of teaching, to implement the innovation in spite of personal and school characteristics.

Method

This study …

Integrated Thematic Instruction : A Descriptive Case Study Of Its Adaptation And Implementation, Premalatha Gaikwad Jan 1991

Integrated Thematic Instruction : A Descriptive Case Study Of Its Adaptation And Implementation, Premalatha Gaikwad

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to describe the operational form of the innovation--Integrated Thematic Instruction within the context of its implementation.

An embedded single case study design was used to carry out this qualitative study, with Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI) as the unit of the case study. The questions that guided the study were: What does ITI look like when implemented by the teacher? What are the contextual elements of implementation of this program? What variations are found in the implementation of this innovation by different teachers?

A review of related literature revealed the historical, philosophical, and theoretical underpinnings …
