Relationships examined were based on perceptions of two groups--faculty and administrators--compared over a 12-year time period divided into two discrete, 6-year periods.

Ex post facto data from six systems (public universities, private universities, liberal arts colleges, state four-year colleges, community colleges, and private junior colleges) were purchased from the Educational Testing Service. Data …

A review of the literature in this field indicated that although long-range planning is considered to be important, it is seldom practiced successfully. The study's response to the problem was to design and field test a model which …

Quantity-Comparative Expression In Young Children: An Analysis Of Responsive And Productive Language, Sandra-Rae Howe Dec 1982

Quantity-Comparative Expression In Young Children: An Analysis Of Responsive And Productive Language, Sandra-Rae Howe

Dissertations

When used in mathematics instruction, quantity-comparative language has specific meaning which may be confusing or unfamiliar to young children. A Correlation Study Of Financial Planning Process Characteristics And Administrators' Perceptions Of Process Worth, Congruence, And Change In Selected Michigan Private Colleges, Gary Hammerberg

The need to study financial planning processes in institutions of higher education is demonstrated by the lack of information in the literature regarding perceptions of financial planning processes. During the current period of stress on educational institutions, an effective and efficient financial planning process can only be considered a benefit to the institution it serves.

Consequently, this investigation attempted to describe current financial planning prcesses in a selected number of private colleges within Michigan and to evaluate their financial planning processes as perceived by their administrators. This was done by identifying attitudes regarding the worth (effectiveness and efficiency), change dimension, …

The Power Of The School Business Official In The Decision-Making Processes Of The Boards Of Education In Selected Michigan School Districts, Robert Del Fein

Dissertations

The literature demonstrates that the dramatic growth in school district size and the increased technical complexity within which school systems must now operate have forced local boards of education into dependence relationships with their key administrative personnel. Consequently, school business officials were thought to be in a position to exercise considerable influence in the decision-making processes of their boards of education because of the technical aspects and uncertainties associated with the responsibilities of that particular role function. It is the nature and extent of this potential for influence which was the focal point of this investigation.

The methodology used for …

An Investigation Of A Procedure To Assess Aggregated Item Bias In A Minimum-Competency Test, Laurence E. Rudolph Aug 1982

An Investigation Of A Procedure To Assess Aggregated Item Bias In A Minimum-Competency Test, Laurence E. Rudolph

Dissertations

This study described and evaluated a new procedure to assess item bias in a minimum-competency test (MCT). This procedure was thought to be capable of estimating the degree of bias contained in a given test item. This is in contrast to traditional item bias detection procedures which focus on the presence or absence of bias in an item. Furthermore, the procedure was thought to be capable of estimating item bias in such a way that the aggregate of item bias (AIB) could be obtained.

The chi-square was found to be the most practical of the item bias procedures and the …

Path-Goal Theory Of Leader Behavior And Its Relation To Job Satisfaction As Moderated By The Intrinsic Motivation Of The Task, Diane Lloyd Gillo Aug 1982

Path-Goal Theory Of Leader Behavior And Its Relation To Job Satisfaction As Moderated By The Intrinsic Motivation Of The Task, Diane Lloyd Gillo

Dissertations

The path-goal theory of leadership, based on an expectancy formulation of motivation, provides a potent schema for the investigation of the relationship between leader behavior and subordinates' satisfactions in the workplace. The inclusion of task related satisfactions has been dealt with as a contingency factor, but this study included the measurement of task design variables consistent with the task design literature.

According to the path-goal theory, leaders are effective because of their impact on subordinates' motivation, ability to perform effectively, and satisfactions. The study was designed to analyze the relationship between the independent variable of leader behavior and the dependent …

The Facilitative Teacher-Student Relationship And Selected Educational Outcomes, Richard Roy Benedict Apr 1982

The Facilitative Teacher-Student Relationship And Selected Educational Outcomes, Richard Roy Benedict

Dissertations

It has been proposed that there are three "facilitative" characteristics of the helpful relationship--genuineness, empathy, and positive regard--which, if offered to students by teachers, would result in desirable educational outcomes. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between teacher facilitative functioning and desirable outcomes of the educational process in secondary schools. Four desirable outcomes were identified: (a) enhanced student self-concepts, (b) student course achievements, (c) more "in-depth" involvement with course content, and (d) more frequent class attendance.

Sixty-eight classrooms (containing over 1,500 senior high school students from four school districts) qualified for study because required subjects were taught within …

A Study Of The Differences Between Prison College Graduates And The Total Released Inmate Population On Recidivism By Risk Category, James Jay Haviland

Dissertations

When a convicted felon is considered for parole from a correctional institution, several factors relating to his experience while incarcerated are presented before the Parole Board. One of the factors which is considered favorably by the Board and indicative of rehabilitation is an individual's participation in educational programs while serving his sentence. This implies a non-verbal quid-pro-quo exchange. Its effect is to fill classrooms even where no formal requirement compels enrollment (Bowker, 1982, 241).

The purpose of this research was to determine if the completion of a two-year post secondary program while incarcerated, resulted in a lower rate of recidivism …
