Perspectives From Female Athletic Trainers In Men's Professional Sports: How Their Athletic Training Programs Set Them Up For Success, Caitlyn Champ
Culminating Projects in Higher Education Administration
Female athletic trainers working in male professional sports are represented at a number strongly disproportionate to the number of female athletic trainers making up the profession. This research study works to focus on how athletic training education programs (ATP) have successfully set up the female athletic trainers who have made it to professional sports. The goal was to focus on what these education programs were doing to set their students apart from other athletic training programs. Three female athletic trainers currently working in male professional sports were interviewed for this qualitative research study by utilizing semi-structured interviewing. The data was …

A number of theoretical and applied outcomes may emerge from the findings of this paper. First, better specialized training for SROs when engaging with students with disabilities may be developed. Second, school personnel may understand the efficacy of SROs when student behaviors escalate. Third, ways for improving the actions of SROs during severe behavioral episodes may be identified. Finally, positive behavioral interventions for SROs may be identified.
I work closely with SROs in our building, and they have brought up concerns about when to intervene, specifically with students who are diagnosed with ASD who are non-verbal. Additional training for all …
Morphological Awareness As An Intervention For Struggling Readers: A Review Of The Literature, Jill Batman
Morphological Awareness As An Intervention For Struggling Readers: A Review Of The Literature, Jill Batman
Culminating Projects in Special Education
Literacy is essential for academic success, but many students read below grade level. The purpose of this article is to determine if morphological awareness--the ability to recognize word parts and their meanings--is an effective intervention for struggling readers. I analyzed data from twelve research studies and found that students who learned morphology made reading comprehension gains 75 percent of the time; in addition, potential design flaws in the remaining three studies may have contributed to lower performance from the experimental groups. These results have promising implications for teachers and their students with reading disabilities, language impoverishment, and alternate language constructs.

Trauma Informed Teaching Practices For Students Who Have Experienced Developmental Trauma, Chelsea Zettler
Trauma Informed Teaching Practices For Students Who Have Experienced Developmental Trauma, Chelsea Zettler
Culminating Projects in Special Education
The effects of developmental trauma on the social and emotional development of students include their academic and social performance in school. “Developmental trauma is the exposure to multiple traumatic events during childhood which result in developmental challenges” (Ko et al., 2008, p. 399). These developmental challenges manifest behaviorally and cognitively. The incidence of trauma experiences in children continues to increase. While a plethora of studies indicate the presence of trauma experiences in children, fewer studies offer effective strategies for working with children who have experienced trauma.
Trauma informed teaching (Crosby, 2015) was identified as an effective strategy for working with …

In the United States there is a shortage of teachers of color. The shortage is exasperated through a lack of funding in education, racism in K-12 classrooms, and through non-inclusive traditional teacher preparation programs. One of the methods thought to increase recruitment, improve teacher training, and increase retention of teachers of color is through the creation of Grow You Own teacher preparation programs. Grow Your Own programs were created as alternative to traditional teacher preparation programs as they are in community colleges, placed in rural communities, and have a focus on culturally responsive pedagogy. There is a lack of research …

This quantitative predictive study examines the influence of attitude, subjective norm (peer pressure) and perceived behavioral control on whether adjunct faculty will or will not utilize instructional technology in their classroom. Based on the Decomposed theory of planned behavior (Taylor & Todd, 1995) a survey of 286 adjunct faculty was conducted in a mid-western state-wide university and college system. The study also explored the working conditions of adjunct faculty which hinder their teaching withing the classroom. The finding shows the while attitude and subjective norm are statistically significant predictors of user’s intention, perceived behavioral control is the strongest predictor of …

Addressing Secondary Traumatic Stress And Burnout Of Teachers Who Work With Students Who Have Trauma Backgrounds, Rachael Larson
Culminating Projects in Special Education
Being an educator can be a very rewarding profession. Many choose this profession because they are passionate and dedicated about influencing and impacting the lives of others. Unfortunately, an increased number of students are being affected by trauma, which directly correlates to an increased number of teachers being at risk for developing compassion fatigue (National Child Traumatic Stress Network [NCTSN], 2011). More children are coming to school unprepared, yet our teachers are expected to provide emotional support, create a nurturing classroom environment, model emotion regulation, coach students through conflict resolution, manage challenging behaviors, while juggling the growing demands brought on …

The United States has experienced an increase in the number of immigrants arriving from various countries around the world over the last several decades. In fall 2014, 30 percent of all public schools in the United States reported student populations of at least 75 percent minority compared with 24 percent in fall, 2004. The percentage of students enrolled in public schools increased from 2004 to 2014 across all racial/ethnic groups (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2014-2015). The process of changing teaching and learning practices occurs through professional development. The Every Student Succeeds Act relies on the …

The study surveyed Northern Minnesota teachers in grades P-12 to determine their perceptions related to the benefits of DGBL and the barriers they face to the implementation of DGBL. Respondents (N = 345) rated trainings, resources, and supports which they felt would encourage their use of digital games to deliver educational content and facilitate learning.
The results of the study revealed the majority of respondents perceived numerous benefits to DGBL including: …
Teachers And School Administrators Who Carry Concealed Handguns At School, Patrick Scudder
Teachers And School Administrators Who Carry Concealed Handguns At School, Patrick Scudder
Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership
Fifteen states in America have laws that allow schools to arm their workforce and legislation to allow teachers to carry a concealed weapon is pending in at least nine other states (Owen, 2018). Still, no studies were found in the literature that listed the challenges and experiences of educators who carry concealed handguns into school buildings. Therefore, it is desirable to conduct research that examines the perspectives of these teachers and school administrators in order to provide information that may be of interest to educational leaders and the wider community.
This qualitative study conducted interviews with six classroom teachers and …

An Evaluation Of Minnesota Principal Characteristics Needed For Effective Implementation Of School-Based Problem-Solving And Intervention Processes, Lisa Whitney
Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership
Abstract
Serving students in their quest to learn and succeed in life are basic goals of public education (Honig, 2016). The simplified purpose for public education, then, is to provide equal opportunity for all children to learn the basic skills needed to be self-sufficient adults and productive citizens in an ever-evolving society (Darling-Hammond et al., 2019). Early acquisition of basic academic skills, such as reading, writing, and mathematical computation, are considered essential to completing this goal.
Booth and Rowsell (2007) maintain that effective leadership is key to achieving process change and for improving learning outcomes for all students. Research shows …

Background
“No matter the quality of their preparation, new teachers encounter many distinct challenges as they navigate their first months and years in the classroom” (New Teacher Center, 2015, p.1). To empower new teachers and strengthen their performance during instructional times, as well as enhance the effectiveness of their contribution school wide, many school districts implement induction programming. “Research demonstrates that comprehensive, multi-year induction programs accelerate the professional growth of new teachers, reduce the rate of new teacher attrition, provide a stronger return on states’ and school districts’ investment, and improve student learning” (New Teacher Center, 2015, p. 2)

Minnesota Secondary Principals Reported Discipline Decision Making From A Culturally Responsive School Leadership Approach, Lydia Kabaka
Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership
Abstract
The use of discipline within the school setting dates back as long as schools have been in existence (Brown & Payne, 1988). There is a wide array of discipline that is enforced from the use of corporal punishment to more modern practices of suspension and expulsion (Middleton, 2008; Noltemeyer et al., 2012). The use of such disciplinary practices has resulted in unintended consequences directly correlated to race, disability status and income; with an overrepresentation of students of color, students receiving special education services and low-income students receiving higher levels of discipline than their peers (Skiba et al, 2011).

Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Understanding By Design Processes In Select Minnesota Public Schools, Sangeeta Pradhan Joshi
Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership
Abstract
An effective educational process demands a strong curriculum framework, quality instruction and appropriate assessment for successful teaching and learning and holistic development of students (Tomlinson et al., 2003). A quality curriculum is designed around the core concepts of a subject focusing on in-depth understanding of the key concepts and providing students abundant opportunities to transfer their understanding in various contexts (National Research Council, 2002). Understanding by Design (UbD) is a backward design curriculum framework that supports teachers and curriculum leaders in designing curriculum, instruction, and assessment with the aim of enhancing students’ understanding and performance (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). …
