Should a country export its mineral wealth in form of concentrates or should it locally treat its ores to produce metals as final products? In the past centuries pyrometallurgy was the only route to extract metals from ores and this required a large capital investment many countries could not afford to raise. This situation encouraged marketing of concentrates. Today, metallurgists have the option to use the hydrometallurgical route to process ores and concentrates at a reasonable capital investment. This opened the way to the possibility of processing ores locally. When need arises to increase production new units can be added …

Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria
Incidents of floods which are mainly caused by changes in landuse is fast becoming a city life experience in Ilorin as in most urban centres in Nigeria causing untold hardships and sometimes loss of lives. Data used were generated from direct field measurements and questionnaire administration. Descriptive statistics and cross tabulations were used in analyzing the data. Results obtained indicate that most respondents use a wide range of non-structural adaptive response to flood. The …

Recently I came across several conversations where the colleagues were discussing the virtues of adaptive leadership. Initially I froze with fear on account of here we go again on another buzz phrase conjured up to sell meaningless outcomes, make someone wealthy, and again add confusion to the leadership debate.

This paper is articulated in the interest of new entrants into the profession of adult education, to colleagues – educators and non-educators, who may wish to share in this all- embracing and encompassing discipline which seems to be confusing to many people, also for the advancement of knowledge in this area of study. The paper explains why the concept of adult education seems confusing, reviews some definitions of adult education by different authors, proposes some definitions, highlighted andragogy as conceived by Malcolm Knowles and pointed out that it should not be viewed as being in sharp contrast with pedagogy in …

Faculty members play a key role in the identification and training of the next generation of scientific talent. In the face of the need to advance and diversify the scientific workforce, we examine whether and how specific institutional contexts shape student interactions with faculty. We conducted a mixed methods study to understand institutional contextual differences in the experiences of aspiring scientists. Data from a qualitative five-campus case study and a quantitative longitudinal study of students from over 117 higher education institutions were analyzed to determine how aspiring scientists interact with faculty and gain access to resources that will help them …

Engineering Success: The Role Of Faculty Relationships With African American Undergraduates, Christopher B. Newman
Christopher B. Newman
Previous research has found that faculty–student relationships are a contributing factor to the retention of students at four-year institutions. In this study, the experiences of twelve African American engineers are explored through the lens of Fiske’s (Structures of Social Life: The Four Elementary Forms of Human Relations, Free Press, New York, 1991) social-relational models theory. The overall findings of this study suggest that faculty play an important role in encouraging or dissuading the African American engineers in this study to persist in their respective majors. Additionally, the involvement in faculty research laboratories and the referral by faculty to other opportunities …

This study explores the ways in which Critical Reading (CR) practices can improve reading comprehension ability of Iranian EFL students. In the present study, the following null hypothesis was proposed: The application of critical reading has no significant effect on improving the reading comprehension ability of Iranian EFL students. The proposed design was a pretest-posttest groups design. Hence, a group of seventy homogeneous students were selected. They were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. Then both groups enjoyed a series of similar instructions except that the students in experimental group were required to express their own opinions about and …

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in Schools: Evidence-Based Screening and Assessment
Epidemiological studies indicate a progressively rising prevalence trend for ASD over the past decade. Yet, compared to population estimates, identification rates have not kept pace in our schools. Many children with ASD are overlooked, misdiagnosed with another psychiatric condition, or present with coexisting psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. School psychologists must be prepared to recognize the presence of risk factors and/or early warning signs of ASD, engage in case finding, and be familiar with screening and assessment tools in order to ensure that students are being identified and …

Befriending (White) Women Faculty In Higher Education?, Barbara J. Thayer-Bacon
Barbara J. Thayer-Bacon
In this essay Thayer-Bacon explores the issue of a chilly climate in higher education that is generated by some women, in particular White women, and the destructive behavior they bring to higher education that damages their programs, as well as their working relationships with colleagues and students. The author seeks to find ways to befriend women in higher education, her sisters of color as well as her White sisters. Thayer-Bacon’s focus here is on White women. Her approach is to use stories from the field to illustrate problems that are analyzed, using a narrative style of philosophical argument.
The Teaching Of Food Technology In Schools, Angela Turner
The Teaching Of Food Technology In Schools, Angela Turner

This paper presents a summary of findings from a recent Australian study that investigated perceptions of ‘food technology’ as viewed by teachers in secondary schools compared to a wider professional view. Maintaining and fostering a coherent and accurate perception throughout the food technology career, from school leaver to professional undergraduate studies, is critical for both the evolution of the field of knowledge and the need to keep up with increasing world demand for food technologists and food innovation. While ‘food technology’ has been well established in most secondary school curriculum offerings, a contradiction has emerged between the ‘school view’ of …
