The exponential population increase in the Country is not without consequential effect on secondary schoolleavers jostling for limited admission space in Nigerian institutions of higher learning. Every academic year, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), rolls out frightening number of candidates desiring to enter Nigerian universities. These universities have limited resources to admit up to fifty percent of the candidates. The result is frustrated secondary school leavers who continue to apply yearly for admission. Consequently, examination malpractice becomes the norm. Measures were taken to ameliorate the problem including sandwich, continuing and distance education programmes. These modes of education are …

Previous research has found that faculty–student relationships are a contributing factor to the retention of students at four-year institutions. In this study, the experiences of twelve African American engineers are explored through the lens of Fiske’s (Structures of Social Life: The Four Elementary Forms of Human Relations, Free Press, New York, 1991) social-relational models theory. The overall findings of this study suggest that faculty play an important role in encouraging or dissuading the African American engineers in this study to persist in their respective majors. Befriending (White) Women Faculty In Higher Education?, Barbara J. Thayer-Bacon

In this essay Thayer-Bacon explores the issue of a chilly climate in higher education that is generated by some women, in particular White women, and the destructive behavior they bring to higher education that damages their programs, as well as their working relationships with colleagues and students. The author seeks to find ways to befriend women in higher education, her sisters of color as well as her White sisters. Thayer-Bacon’s focus here is on White women. Her approach is to use stories from the field to illustrate problems that are analyzed, using a narrative style of philosophical argument.
