In a teaching experiment, I examined a theoretical model of mathematics teaching and learning in practice. In this paper I focus on how the model can guide the teacher's thinking about students' understandings and the generation of activities that foster intended transformations in those understandings. As a research-teacher I taught, twice a week for four months, basic ideas of fractions to 28 third graders, in a public school in Israel. The analysis of both classroom data and researcher's documented reflections indicates how the model can empower the generation and explanation of successful teaching activities, as well as thinking about and …

Distinguishing Two Stages Of Mathematics Conceptual Learning, Ron Tzur, Marty Simon

In this theoretical article, we distinguish two stages of learning a new mathematical concept – participatory and anticipatory. We use a recently developed mechanism for explaining mathematical conceptual learning – reflection on activity-effect relationship – as well as von Glasersfeld’s tripartite model of a scheme, to explain qualitative distinctions between the two stages. We use this distinction to explain why instructional interventions (including inquiry-based approaches) may not bring about the intended instructional goals.

Estimating the difficulty level of math word problems is an important task for many educational applications. Identification of relevant and irrelevant sentences in math word problems is an important step for calculating the difficulty levels of such problems. This paper addresses a novel application of text categorization to identify two types of sentences in mathematical word problems, namely relevant and irrelevant sentences. Background: Most Australian medical student places are government-supported, reducing the cost of tuition to about $10,000 each year, but some private places with fees cost up to $60,000 per year. In North America, debt at graduation is associated with different career choices. We explored the relationship between potential debt at graduation and future career preference. Background: Makira Island in the Solomon Islands has a population of over 41,000 people, which in 2013 was serviced by one doctor, who worked in the hospital and traveled to remote sites, supported by highly skilled nursing staff. Public education accountability rests almost exclusively with schools rather than governments. This paper explores its three dimensions: economy, efficiency, and effectiveness. Performance indicators of these dimensions were developed which facilitated testing of significant differences in means over time using analysis of variance. Only salary and wage expenditures per instruction personnel exhibited greater economy. Instructional equipment per pupil was related to increased efficiency. Several indicators suggested enhanced effectiveness. Student/teacher ratio declined and top performers in public schools improved in achievement. Graduation rate, an indicator of achievement and participation, significantly rose in recent years. In summary, several effectiveness indicators revealed encouraging trends …

Investigates whether the performance and attitudes of students could be improved by giving them some control over the group selection process. Groups were formed either by randomly combining paired friends or by randomly assigning all students. Students completed a group exercise and a group case. The dependent variables were the project grades and student satisfaction. Student satisfaction was measured using a questionnaire. The results show that attitudes of students were more positive when they were allowed to choose a single friend in the group. The project grades were significantly higher when students were paired, and this result was true regardless …

The use of internships is a powerful learning tool that allow business students to make connections between their classroom experience and the world of work. If designed appropriately and positioned correctly in the curriculum, they can also be an ideal opportunity to conduct assurance of learning activities related to business school accreditation. This study reports on survey results relating to business schools’ use of internships in their assurance of learning efforts and describes one school’s successful attempt to use internships as the key platform for its well-developed assurance of learning program.

An increasing number of campuses are working to build systems of incentives and supports for faculty who undertake community-engaged scholarship. The Academy for Future Teachers (AFT) model has shown promise in preparing and inspiring underrepresented high school students to future science careers. Students were recruited into a 3-week summer program collaboratively taught by K-12 teachers and college professors. Our survey study looked into the nature of their participation in the program and how this participation influenced their a) outlook on teachers, teaching, and learning, b) attitudes in science and mathematics, and c) understanding of science and mathematics content.
