Cross-Country Heterogeneity In Students’ Reporting Behavior: The Use Of The Anchoring Vignette Method, Hana Vonkova, Gema Zamarro, Collin Hitt

Gema Zamarro

Self-reports are an indispensable source of information in education research but they are often affected by heterogeneity in reporting behavior. Failing to correct for this heterogeneity can lead to invalid comparisons across groups. We use the parametric anchoring vignette method to correct for cross-country incomparability of students’ reports on teacher’s classroom management. Our analysis is based on the data from the Programme for International Student Assessment 2012. We show significant variation in implicit standards across countries. Correlations between countries’ average teacher classroom management levels and external variables like students test scores and public expenditure per pupil change substantially after our …

Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Jason Goldsmith Mar 2016

Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Jason Goldsmith

Jason Goldsmith

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde draws on Robert Louis Stevensons intimate knowledge of Victorian legal culture knowledge Stevenson acquired while studying law at the University of Edinburgh. (Although he was called to the Scottish bar in 1875, he abandoned the legal profession and never practiced it.) Its trace can be found in the work's title, main characters, and narrative structure: the title suggests a legal action; Mr. Utterson is the legal representative of Henry Jekyll, who is himself both a doctor of law (LLD) and a doctor of Civil laws (DCL); and the final two chapters …

From The Inside In: An Examination Of Common Core Knowledge & Communication In Schools, Jonathan Supovitz, Ryan Fink, Bobbi Newman

Bobbi Newman

In this report, CPRE researchers explore how Common Core knowledge and influence are distributed inside of schools and how these configurations may help teachers to engage with the Common Core and influence their understanding and implementation. To do so, we used a mixed-method approach to examine knowledge and influence in eight schools, including five elementary schools and three middle schools. Our central method was a survey of knowledge and influence of all faculty members in a sample of eight schools. These data are supplemented with interview data from a purposeful sample of teachers and administrators in the eight schools.

The Milwaukee Public School district (MPS) Demonstration Schools Initiative provided intensive support to 10 MPS elementary and middle schools implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics and English language arts. This evaluation report was designed to answer two overarching questions: How did MPS implement the Demonstration Schools Initiative in Year One, and what factors shaped the implementation? Is there evidence of teachers' adoption of the instructional shifts associated with the CCSS? This evaluation found that teachers in the Demonstration Schools ended the 2012-2013 school year with significantly higher CCSS knowledge in both mathematics and English language arts than …

Christina Triezenberg

Despite the growing evidence of humanity’s impact on the natural world and the urgent need to shape citizens who understand the impact that their choices and actions have on their local and global environments, colleges and universities throughout the United States have been slow to add environmental education as a core component of their undergraduate curricula. Harnessing our shared interest in environment issues and the humanities, we designed and taught an experimental course in environmental literature for the honors program at Western Michigan University that we hope will become a template of what is possible in postsecondary environmental education. Using …

Interprofessional Education, Lisa Bliss, Sylvia Caley, Patty Roberts, Emily Suski, Robert Pettignano

Sylvia B. Caley

As legal educators consider how to improve the outcomes of legal education, maximizing the knowledge, skills, and values taught during the law school experience, consideration should be given to increasing interprofessional learning opportunities in the curricula. As Best Practices for Legal Education suggested, the creative thinking necessary for effective problem-solving includes an understanding of interprofessional dimensions of practice, but interprofessional opportunities are still the exception rather than the norm in legal education. Interprofessional legal education intentionally asks law students to blend the knowledge, skills, and values of two or more professions in order to address complex legal problems. Placing students …

Extract: The reconstruction of the modern university is under way, and it extends beyond Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Just as the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) has re-imagined urban spaces in Minecraft (Mojang, 2011) through the block by block initiative (blockbyblock.org), so too have educators re-imagined the space and meaning of the University Campus. This chapter presents the potential of Minecraft to help students and professors re-think university spaces and university education by presenting a detailed case study of the integration of the standard, unmodified release of Minecraft operating in creative mode into an experimental university class.

Student Engagement And Learning-By-Doing: A Multiple Technique Approach To Teaching Global Business Strategy, Ingrid Bonn Mar 2015

Student Engagement And Learning-By-Doing: A Multiple Technique Approach To Teaching Global Business Strategy, Ingrid Bonn

Ingrid Bonn

Global Business Strategy is a complex and multifaceted subject which is challenging to teach to undergraduate students because of their lack of real-world work experience and the requirement to adopt an international perspective in all thought processes and activities. The purpose of this article is to present a semester-long teaching approach that is based on the assumption that global strategy content and behavioural skills must be simultaneously addressed when teaching the subject. This teaching approach, which fosters student engagement when dealing with diverse, complex and competing demands of global strategy development and implementation, has been used and refined over a …

Essay Question Formative Assessments In Large Section Courses: Two Studies Illustrating Easy And Effective Use, Andrea Curcio, Gregory Jones, Tanya Washington

Tanya Monique Washington

Do formative assessments, via practice exercises accompanied by generalized feedback, make a difference in student final essay and short-answer examination performance? If so, does the practice help some students more than others? We sought to answer these questions in two studies performed with law students. We also sought to devise a duplicable model for examining those same questions across disciplines. Finally, we hoped to develop an easily workable method to provide practice and feedback to large section courses without unduly burdening faculty. This chapter discusses our findings that practice exercises and generalized feedback formative assessments can be done in large …

Thelma Perso And Colleen Hayward, Teaching Indigenous Students: Cultural Awareness And Classroom Strategies For Improving Learning Outcomes, Jacynta Krakouer, Troy Meston

Jacynta Krakouer

How can cultural responsiveness towards Indigenous students be truly embedded in teaching
pedagogy and national standards? In this book, Perso and Hayward (2015) seek to provide
teachers with practical tools for working effectively with Indigenous students in school
settings. This book is written with the teacher in mind, presenting a contemporary tone
about the complexities of culturally responsive, quality teaching and learning, across
various stages of teaching and assessment. The authors preface their book by emphasising
the relevance of strategies for all students, thus demystifying the ‘exotification’ of Indigenous
learners, with competencies based upon the individualisation of learning for all …

Special Education At The Core: Where Do The Common Core State Standards Leave Our Students With Disabilities?, Lisa Beymer

Lisa Beymer

The oversimplification with which the new Common Core State Standards approach the instruction of students with disabilities leaves much to be desired on the part of the classroom teacher, who is left to determine how the standards will be made accessible for all students. The new standards require increased skill and application across the subject areas. Those students with specific learning needs may require additional support, altered classroom instruction and an increase in staff-to-specialist collaboration. At the same time, the new standards also provide an opportunity for students with disabilities to access higher-level thinking skills that may prove advantageous for …

International Service-Learning: A Synthesis Of The Research Literature, Roxanne Amerson

Roxanne Amerson

There is an increased effort to prepare students in higher education to work and live in a global world, especially in health-related fields. The focus on global communities with a strong commitment to cultural diversity is a high priority for many institutions of higher learning. To reach this goal, educators need research-based pedagogies to facilitate optimal learning outcomes. This session will look beyond the literature that presents only personal experiences and anecdotal evidence of learning to review research conducted with international service-learning programs. The review of literature includes publications between 1998 and 2012 and documentation as a research study using …

Digital Landscape: Embracing The Reality, Carol Sternberger

Carol S Sternberger

Educators must be responsive to industry’s dynamic, technology rich environment. It is important for universities to move beyond expecting graduates to have isolated technology skills. Designing curricula that will produce graduates who are comfortable using technology and possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize data requires a different approach to education. The paper focuses on the various technologies integrated in a graduate course designed to prepare nurse educators to work in both academic and clinical environments. Best practices, evidence-based methods and integrated concepts from a requisite informatics course were foundational in the course assignments that focused on the implementation …

Session A-1: Problem Solving Through Graph Theory, Noah Prince

Noah Prince

Graph theory is an area of mathematics often not encountered before college, and not always even there. Nonetheless, it is full of problems that novices can quickly understand and begin to figure out. Often, sixty seconds of introduction to such a problem can lead to literally an hour of discussion as students engage in finding solutions. In this presentation, I will offer some sample problems and discuss how to use them with students in middle or high school.
